These 10 hybrid cars with which you will never go (almost) never again at the pump, discover the top of the rechargeable hybrid cars in 2023

Top 7 rechargeable hybrid cars in 2023

The MERCEDES GLC 300 output in 2022 allows long distances in rechargeable hybrid motorization with Diesel fuel. The mixed model allows almost 100 km of autonomy in 100% electric mode. Also called “the intelligent rechargeable hybrid car”, Mercedes’ GLC 300 has all the necessary comfort: reversing camera, control screen and driving assistance. It is also an automobile which is distinguished by the autonomy of its battery in 100% electric mode: from 45 to 61 km.

These 10 hybrid cars with which you will never (almost) never go to the pump

Suzuki across rechargeable hybrid

The electrical autonomy of rechargeable hybrid cars continues to progress, so much so that some allow you to roll 100% electric on a daily basis, without ever having to go to the pump. Here are the 10 best in this exercise.

Hybrid is evil.

This is in any case what we sometimes hear when we listen to certain criticisms from the supporters of the 100% electric (of which I am a part, I must admit). Among these criticisms, the one that comes up most often is to deplore the fact that many owners of rechargeable hybrids do never make recharge, just burning oil to go from point A to point B, even if The short distance would allow it to be done in 100% electric mode.

In this case, so yes the plugin hybrid is a kind of ecological aberration, since it combines thermal defects (C02 emissions) and electric (production of batteries and overweight). In short, environmental horror.

Why these criticisms of hybrid, and are they really justified ?

It is complicated. If most rechargeable hybrid users probably make it good use, which would seem to be confirmed by the quota of charging stations occupied in my parking lot by such devices, namely that they recharge them regularly to be able to do as much as possible ride in electric mode, some do not give themselves this pain. Who are they ? Mainly beneficiaries of official cars, provided by their company with the main motivation not ecology but the exemption from TVS, and which, residing in the city, do not necessarily have the possibility of recharging. And as in any case their road costs are covered, everything is brought together so that they prefer to switch to the pump once from time to time as a terminal daily.

However, there is indeed a virtuous use of the plugin hybrid, as long as we want to hurt ourselves, and especially that we can do it, of course. Even if this figure varies a little according to the sources and the various statistics, we know that the French travels on average 12,000 kilometers per year at the wheel of his car, all types of journeys combined. If we divide this distance by the number of days in the year, this gives about 33 km per day. So of course, this is an average, and some motorists, who do not use their car for the holidays, do it on the other hand daily to get to their work on higher-return distances. But the consensus wants the enlarged average to be said between 30 and 50 km per day.

The top 10 hybrid cars with the best electrical autonomy

You see me coming … in the current state of technology, many rechargeable hybrid cars allow you to travel more than 50 km in 100% electric mode. Admittedly, you will not have the power or the performance of the thermal mode, and even less those of an electric “real”, but with the light foot, you may gain in economics and ecology what you lose in sensations. What may be the blow to be tempted, no ?

What are these hybrids that would allow you to roll 100% electric on a daily basis and in the vast majority of your use cases ? They are starting to be legion, and it is not the choice that is missing, even if we agree that it is unfortunately not the most affordable. Piur Establish this classification We have retained the autonomy according to the mixed WLTP cycle.

1. Mercedes Gle SUV Hybrid rechargeable – 105 km

Okay it’s an SUV, okay is a merco that costs a kidney, but that is not a reason for him to appear in this ranking, since he occupies the first place. The machine, like many hybrid SUVs, is very popular with corporate fleets, and it offers a record electric full of more than 100 km according to the manufacturer figures and WLTP.

2. BMW x5 xDrive45e – 88 km

The big SUV that we love to hate it does not get too bad in terms of an electric mode radius. Located under the floor of the luggage compartment, the lithium-ion battery 24.4 kWh of energy capacity for the XDRIVE45E version, including 21 kWh of useful capacity. In electric mode, the BMW x5 xDrive45e can drive up to 120 km/h and benefits from WLTP autonomy of around 88 kilometers. A correct value given the weight that the X5 xDrive45e must move.

3. Suzuki Across – 75 km

Astonishing challenger, the Suzuki Across shines with its energy performance since it allows you to travel 75 km in electric mode according to the WLTP standard, and up to 98 km in town according to the manufacturer. Another SUV, but it is more compact, even if you can blame it its very “Japanese” line which makes it look like all the equivalent models of other brands in the country of the sunrise.

4. Toyota Rav4 – 75 km

The Toyota Rav4 has been available in a hybrid version for some time, but this model is the first rechargeable model. It is based on the same platform as the Suzuki above. Its new 18.1 kW lithium-ion battery allows you to travel more than 75 km in WLTP electric mode.

5. Volvo XC90 Recharge – 70 km

On the last step of this top 5, where the big statutory SUVs return to the big rechargeable hybrid declination of the brand’s flagship, which nevertheless claims “between 67 and 70 km” of WLTP electric autonomy. Surprisingly, apart from this indication of autonomy, Volvo does not provide any indication of the heat engine, the electric motor, or on the batteries.

6. Ford Kuga Phev – 64 km

The small and elegant Ford crossover claims a independence of 64 km in mixed cycle and 88 km WLTP for urban cycle driving, still according to the WLTP standard.

7. Peugeot 508 rechargeable hybrid – 54 km

The first Frenchman of this list of virtuous hybrids ! Derived from the 508 II, the Peugeot 508 rechargeable hybrid has been marketed since fall 2019. With a useful capacity of 11.6 kWh (13.2 in total), the Lithium-ion Offer battery is approved with 54 km of autonomy in WLTP cycle (52 km for break). The battery is guaranteed 8 years or 160.000 km by the manufacturer for a minimum capacity of 70%.

8. Renault Megane E-Tech Plug-in Hybrid-50 km

A Frenchwoman succeeds another Frenchwoman. The new Renault Megane E-Tech Plug-in Hybrid claims 50 km of WLTP autonomy in electric mode. More specifically, the LG 400 V 400 V ion battery of 9.8 kWh, including 7.5 kWh useful, allows the car to drive in 100 % electric up to 135 km/h over 50 kilometers in the mixed WLTP cycle and until ‘at 65 kilometers in urban cycle WLTP City.

9. Kia Niro rechargeable hybrid – 49 km

Kia’s compact hybrid SUV, whose success of the electric version is not denied, continues its career and has had an important facelift recently. This does not prevent it from appearing in the top 10 hybrid cars with the best electric autonomy, with a radius of WLTP 65 km in urban driving and 49 km in the mixed cycle.

10. Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Phev – 45 km

The Eclipse Cross Phev is animated by two electric motors, placed on the front and rear axles, supplying a battery. The battery of this compact SUV totals 13.8 kWh capacity for the one who is the successor to the outlander. This now authorizes up to 45 kilometers in WLTP cycle. When it operates in electric mode the Eclipse Cross Phev at a maximum speed of 135 km/h.

To choose your plugin hybrid, it will also be necessary to take into account the recharging times, which are very variable depending on the model, the socket and the cable, and which can sometimes be a little long, even if a kind of average located around from 3 to 5 hours seems to become the rule. Unfortunately, not all manufacturers do not provide this data, no more than the maximum speed possible in electric mode. However, the time was over or, in hybrids, electric rimed with anemic. Modern hybrids are all able to exceed 100 km/h at cruising speed 100% electric, but it will obviously be at the expense of autonomy. And this is not really justified in a peri-urban context.

As we can see, the hybrid, even if it seems to disappear definitively from the medium -term traffic, can also have virtuous sides. It is still necessary to want, and to be able, to use it optimally, which should allow to do without fuel in most cases of use. With a small dose of learning about ecoconduite, would it not be an excellent way to get your hands, or rather the foot, in preparation for an electric passage ?

The objective of the Toyota Insurance project is to offer quality after sale customer service on all European countries to promote hybrid motorization, electric car and contribute to the drop in overall emissions. The Toyota Insurance concept also aims to democratize its hybrid vehicle offer.

2023: BMW inaugurates its very first hybrid model

In 2023, BMW will offer a new hybrid automobile model: the M5. This is the first time that the thermal manufacturer will have supported its traditional motorization of electric support. For the car manufacturer, the principle is to offer a model with more horses without sacrificing the large cylinders of its vehicles. The future BMW sports sedan should have an electric motor of 197 hp. Coupled with its thermal engine, the model should therefore reach 748 hp in total.

The very first hybrid M5 in the history of BMW will be presented in seven / Oct 2023, it will be necessary to wait until 2024 to see the model marketed and we speak of a price around 200,000 euros. As for its autonomy, it can travel between 54 and 62 km in 100% electric mode and benefits from the plug in recharge system. In electric mode, the BMW hybrid can even reach a speed of 135 km/h. The first BMW rechargeable hybrid car offer is also available in sedan and Break Touring (with all the options: driving screen, reversing camera, etc.)).

Peugeot: democratize hybrid in 2023

At Peugeot, we choose the 3008 model for the year 2023 (the location is also scheduled for September/October 2024). The manufacturer now seeks to democratize hybrid, by offering more modest combined models and light hybridization. The 3008 model demonstrates a top speed up to 235 km/ h with very low fuel emissions.

The 308 plug-in version 2022 model was sold in nearly 7044 copies and its average price is found around 45,000 euros. Depending on the WLTP standard, it can travel almost 60 km in an electric cycle. It is therefore a model of mixed motorization perfectly for the creation of green professional fleets, especially for VRP in urban areas.

Citroën and its new traveler model for 2023

The manufacturer wishes travel to travel By offering new models of combined vehicles including the C5 x Hybrid car. The model aims to be a tour operator and combines a 180 hp heat engine and an electric 81, 2 kW (the equivalent of 11 hp). In combined power, the Citroën model for the next year will therefore reach some 225 horsepower for an autonomy of up to 55km/h.

The 2022 flagship model at Citroën is air cross hybrid C5. This is the SUV acclaimed by the French. Its tax power of 10 CV is associated with an overall power of 181 hp, an automatic transmission, a reversing camera and 55 km of autonomy in WLTP cycle with a speed in 100% electric mode of 135 km/h. Citroën’s air cross hybrid has benefited from a global stylistic revision: higher screen, sliding individual seats, etc. As for the mixed hybridization system, it is unchanged: it is a combination between 4 cylinders with 180 hp petrol fuel and an 80 kW electric motor.

Audi: Hybrid SUV leader?

The leader of the SUV also offers its hybrid automobile models. At Audi, we are considering a transition to 100% electric ranges by 2023. In the meantime, the manufacturer revisits its offer thanks to TFSI technology and provides its cars with hybrid motorization. The two models to come, A6 e-tron, or the variant of the hybrid A3 with raised design, benefit from high power, good speed and long autonomy.

It is the Q6 e-tron model that constitutes the heart of the range of Audi hybrid electric vehicles. The manufacturer provides its cars with the TFSI system (Turbo Charged Fuel Stratified injection). The TFSI acronym ensures that the engine operates with turbocharged petrol fuel, which offers low consumption coupled at good speed.

It was in 2004 that this mixed technology was introduced in the ranges of the car manufacturer. In practice, this motorization allows a direct injection system and a clear decrease in energy loss at the time of combustion of the air / fuel mixture. Intended for high power cars, the TFSI is to increase the yield of compression cylinders of the mixture and to make its capacity grow. On a TFSI rechargeable hybrid car, the energy of the deceleration / braking phases is automatically recovered.

With TFSI technology, Audi offers hybrid cars whose fuel consumption is reduced by almost 15% while providing a speed and power worthy of the manufacturer. Indeed, TFSI certification is only available on premium vehicles and guarantees that the heat engine operates with petrol (as opposed to TDI engines, which require diesel). TFSI technology is found today on 1.2L and 86 horsepower models in the same way as vehicles like A1 (4.0L).

The low -consumption Audi hybrid SUV is expected for sale for the end of 2023, its marketing to the general public will therefore only intervene in 2024. It benefits from the Hybrid Audi concept, the Quattro e-tron: two battery sizes, a rear traction and a quick recharge, up to 270 kW. In real autonomy, the manufacturer is still waiting for official approval, but we are talking about a value of 700 km maximum.

Mercedémise on autonomy and its classic SUV aesthetic

The MERCEDES GLC 300 output in 2022 allows long distances in rechargeable hybrid motorization with Diesel fuel. The mixed model allows almost 100 km of autonomy in 100% electric mode. Also called “the intelligent rechargeable hybrid car”, Mercedes’ GLC 300 has all the necessary comfort: reversing camera, control screen and driving assistance. It is also an automobile which is distinguished by the autonomy of its battery in 100% electric mode: from 45 to 61 km.

The auto manufacturer here retains its SUV aesthetics, which has been successful with the classic SUV GLC, but now offers a more softened design look. The Mercedes GLC 300 model is affordable from 60,700 euros for the Diesel 220 D version (Line before Garden finish). The Diesel rechargeable hybrid version has been available since December 2022, without the prices still seem to be really defined (we are talking about an additional cost of almost 10,000 euros).

The hybrid space type at Renault

Renault had already taken advantage of the electric, but it returns to the front of the stage with a space type model which takes on the tunes of crossover and heads towards a SUV aesthetic. The Renault Austral Hybrid model has already been launched in 2022 with a price around 40,000 euros for sale.

The vehicle can transport up to 5 people and has a 1.7 kWh battery power for very low consumption. With its front traction, the new generation hybrid from Renault will be able to reach a power of 280 hp for about 100 km of autonomy in WLTP cycle cycle. Note that in October 2022 at the sales of electric hybrid car sales, Renault was present in very good place with its Arkana model (faced with its direct competitor, Toyota Yaris). The same OCT 2022 ranking offers third place to its Captur E-Tech and the fourth at the Renault Clio, which occupies 5% of market share.

Rechargeable hybrid cars 2023: Consumer FAQ

Understand everything about rechargeable hybrid cars !

What is the difference between hybrid and rechargeable hybrid ?

Traditionally, a hybrid engine is not rechargeable: vehicles are equipped with both a heat engine (petrol or diesel fuel) and an electric motor.

The engine of an electric car is powered by an energy recovery system of the heat engine when operating the automobile, its deceleration or braking phases.

Hybrid cars have larger capacity batteries: their autonomy is extended compared to a 100% electric model. The recharging is carried out in the operation of the car and requires a terminal connection.

What are the hybrid cars that recharge while driving ?

Thus, a hybrid car recharges while driving, this is the case of certain models of already iconic electric vehicles of large manufacturers:

  • The 308 PEUGEOT HYBRID;
  • The majority of Toyota hybrid models, including the Prius, Yaris (with reversing camera) and RAV4;
  • The classic Hyundai I oniq;
  • Suzuki’s Kia Niro plugin;
  • The TFSI range at Audi.

What is the best rechargeable hybrid car ?

For the year 2023, it is still difficult to establish a fixed classification of the best rechargeable hybrid cars, due to regular developments in terms of propulsion technology and mixed motorization. Nevertheless, by observing the sale price, the consumption of models, the power, the rejection of CO2, the autonomy, the recharge time, it is the Italian Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 in rechargeable which holds the webbed.

The price of the automobile is around 41,990 euros and the model consumes only 2.8 l/100 km. CO2 emissions are therefore low: 78 g/km for a global power of 275 hp and 60 km of autonomy in 100% electric mode. Please note, hybridization is with rechargeable petrol and the automobile requires more than 2 hours of loading so that the battery is complete (on a fast 7.4 kW charger).

What is the price of a rechargeable hybrid car ?

The ranges of rechargeable hybrid cars are varied and the price palette covers a wide range of electric cars. The price is higher than for a thermal vehicle, but there is a constant drop in purchase rates. The first hybrid cars can therefore be found from 30,000 euros for a compact design and more than 100,000 euros for a luxury sedan. There is a conversion bonus and other ecological bonuses to bring down the amount of the purchase bill and promote the transition to green energy.

For example, professionals wishing to acquire a new rechargeable hybrid car and to build a fleet of electric utility vans benefit from nearly 7,000 euros of ecological bonus on their purchase and an exemption from TVS registered in the finance law. Professionals also have access to information on the type of energy for their car fleet as well as encrypted data on the challenges of sustainable mobility for their business.

The 2023 finance bill announced the future drop in the ecological bonus (of 1,000 euros) while renewing the system by a few months. To benefit from all aid in the finance law to buy a hybrid automobile, so you will have to hurry.

What is the autonomy of a rechargeable hybrid car ?

The autonomy of rechargeable hybrid vehicles varies according to the models and manufacturers (and the number of batteries available to the vehicle). The rechargeable motorization nevertheless has the advantage of being able to withstand small urban trips and in wide urban areas, without risk of breaking down: the heat engine being able to take over until the next charging station. For example, at Toyota, the autonomy of rechargeable hybrid cars varies between 50 and 75 km using exclusively the electric battery of cars.

The vehicle’s autonomy time also varies according to driving, the deceleration and braking phases to supply the battery. In WLTP cycle, the majority of manufacturers today announce a figure between 40 and 60 km (i.e. maximum km in real use), except class C 300th of Mercedes which has two colossal batteries for 111 km of autonomy.

What is the difference between plug-in and hybrid plug-in?

Between a hybrid plug-in plug-in and plug-in, it is in all cases a mixed motorization, which combines classic fuel and electrical energy. The difference is to recharge. The simple hybrid car cannot recharge on an electrical outlet, while the hybrid plug-in vehicle has this type of connection. In addition, electric plug-in has a generally more powerful 100% electric mode.

Rechargeable electric hybrid car and WLTP standard: what is it?

Established since 2019, the WLTP standard consists of a global protocol offering to measure emission releases and the consumption of thermal, electric and hybrid cars. This approval is updated with regard to new regulations and is much more realistic since it takes into account the consumption and polluting emissions of thermal vehicles as well as the autonomy of the batteries of electric cars.

We are talking about WLTP cycle to designate the results of a hybrid car in all WLTP tests: real conditions, daily use, emission measurement, weather conditions, technical grounds, various driving styles, etc. The WLTP cycle therefore corresponds to a global indication for drivers wishing to properly assess the performance of their future car.

Why go to the rechargeable hybrid car?

The mixed motorization technology that characterizes hybrid recharging electric vehicles provides many advantages of use for individuals as well as professionals. Its autonomy in electric mode is sufficient to ensure everyday journeys, which is highly downwards programs in the city center.

Fuel consumption is also very low: the heat engine only takes over once the battery is discharged. This same battery draws its energy source both on a terminal recharging or thanks to driving (braking phases and/or deceleration). We note that the majority of electric hybrid cars consume in classic fuel 1 l/100 km, which is very little.

This hybrid engine therefore offers a step towards green mobility and the use of clean energy, while making sure never to break down. The hybrid engine offers to ensure the portions of journeys until the next electric terminals. Indeed, many car manufacturers consider that the complete electrification of their offer requires hybridization. This is particularly the case of Toyota, BMW, Mercedes and Audi (with its TFSI technology), which claim to believe in the rechargeable hybrid car.

The year 2023 will be marked by the release of new models of rechargeable hybrid cars much more efficient, democratized and within everyone’s reach, as evidenced by the government will registered in the LOM law. In addition to the efforts of manufacturers of financial aid for individuals such as professionals allowing to go to green energies, to reduce emissions, and offering to green the captive fleets. The 2023 finance bill also renews the ecological bonus. The same future finance law also retains the scales for calculating premiums for conversion.
