Smartphones: what are the most reliable and durable brands ?

smartphone

Samsung Pub

The sustainability of the products offered by a smartphone brand is an important criterion to take into consideration before choosing a model. We take stock of the most reliable manufacturers in this area.

We often choose your smartphone according to its price and its technical characteristics, but rarely according to its reliability and durability, sometimes for lack of information on these subjects. We now have a little more objective elements to analyze thanks to the 5th edition (2022) of the after -sales service published by the Fnac Darty group.

Two criteria for determining the sustainability of the products

To establish its most sustainable brands, Fnac Darty has defined two main criteria: Reliability and reparability. The reliability of a product is determined as its ability to operate normally without breaking down. This “breakdown rate” is calculated from the 2.5 million interventions carried out each year by the SAV FNAC DARTY, all products combined.

Regarding repairability, it is based on the ease of repairing a product that breaks down, rather than replacing it. The “repair rate” is determined by the availability of spare parts and their prices. Criteria close to those used to calculate the repairability index which has its detractors.

The most sustainable phones

At the top of the most sustainable smartphones ranking, we find Apple with a global score of 142 points. In detail, there is a reliability score of 147, a repairability score of 137 and an availability of spare parts for 7 years. Finally, the average cost per spare part does not exceed 3 % of the product.

Huawei is second in the ranking this year with a general score of 131 points. The reliability index is 154, higher than that of Apple, but the Chinese brand is penalized by a repairability score of 107 and an availability of spare parts for only 2 years. The average cost per part does not exceed 3 % of the price of the product.

Sustainable smartphones brands

Third place in the podium is occupied by Samsung with 128 points. In detail, there is a score of 116 points for reliability, 139 for repairability, 7 years of availability for spare parts and an average cost per part which represents 4 % of the price product. Follow Oppo, Xiaomi, Wiko, Doro, Nokia and Logicom which closes the walking.

The two most reliable and durable smartphones brands in this ranking are therefore Apple and Huawei. The brand with the best repairability score, however, is Samsung, followed closely by Apple.

On the other hand, no mention is made of the manufacturers’ software update policy which also plays a role in replacing a smartphone. In this little game, Apple prevails with high hands with at least 6 years of major iOS updates, against four years for high -end models of Samsung. For its part, Germany claims 7 years of update for our smartphones.

The Electronic Communications Regulatory Authority (ARCEP) alerts the too frequent renewal of our smartphones. In France, around 63 % of smartphones used have under two years and 83 % of users claim to have their phone for less than three years. Keeping your smartphone as long as possible is today a major ecological issue which can also make it possible to make great savings.
