Look What If .. ? (from this Tuesday on Disney + to the rhythm of one episode per week) if you have not finished beforehand Loki, The previous series of the studio that has just ended, is to expose you to a double disclosure (or spoil For connected): the narrator of What it .. ? is a certain “Watcher” (“the one who remains”, in VF), which precisely plays an important role in the finale of Loki. What If .. ? is ultimately only a playful practice of this concept highly anticipated by fans of Marvel Universe, especially those who have read comics. The principle ? Both simple and infinitely rich: our world is not unique. There is even an incalculable number, since each crucial moment in history, each decisive decision can create a parallel reality, in which history continues a different path from ours, where characters we know sometimes evolve in a very surprising way.
Imagine for example what could have happened if Steve Rodgers had not become the Super-Soldat Captain America, leaving agent Peggy Carter to take his place ? If Yondu pests (The guards of the galaxy) had removed T’Challa (alias Black Panther) in his childhood instead of Peter Quill ? If the future Avengers were mysteriously murdered before they even be recruited by Nick Fury ? These three examples constitute the starting points of the first three episodes of What If .. ? But the rest of the series, given its trailer, promises many other surprises (including Avengers Zombies). Because, yes, the main risk of this multiverse system is to tell everything and anything, since absolutely everything is by definition possible. Flame for the moment perfectly avoided: if each episode plays voluptuously with the letter from the canon universe, it perfectly respects the spirit. Lovers of the mixture of humor (many), emotion (a little) and epic scenes (enormously) will therefore find their account largely, especially since the quality of production is there. With a special mention to the casting of voice in original version, among which we will recognize the late Chadwick Boseman in the role of T’CHALA.
The bias of humor at the expense of the drama
If you have to find a defect in What If .. ?, It may be ultimately not to lend a consequence. By definition, even if its authors insist that the series is “canon”, and that it is perfectly possible that in the future, characters from several universes meet, it must be admitted that the principle of universes multiple does not invite to get involved alongside the heroes. Where Marvel had hitherto accustomed us to characters developed on several feature films, we find ourselves a little cramped in the 30-minute format of the episodes: even if the writing is very effective, she lets glimpse her seams. Present new characters, highlight the differences and common points they have with the versions of themselves that we have known until then, and, at the same time, tell a story that is held in half an hour Chrono, it’s still a sacred challenge. And even if no episode is strictly speaking, some give the impression of going far too quickly for their good.
Likewise, while comics What If .. ? (published between 1977 and 1998) were often tinged with gravity and drama, events generally turning there less well than in general continuity (French readers of the journal Spidey, who published these stories, remember it !), the animated series radically takes the party of humor and lightness. Even in an episode where some iconic heroes of the Avengers die one after the other, sometimes in a fairly horrible way, the general tone remains in winks, good words and smiles of connivance. These winks, precisely, are so many, sometimes invasive and not necessarily essential, that they give the impression of a series intended above all for fans, at the risk of leaving on the side of the road the spectator does not not having an encyclopedic knowledge of Marvel Universe. We meet for example Thanos or even Howard the Duck, but without ever exceeding anecdotal, even frankly free, scriptwriting speaking.
All this should not spoil the pleasure of Marvel fans, or even that of lovers of good animated, inventive and fun series. What If .. ? Perfectly fulfills his double objective: to develop and explain a concept that is not necessarily obvious to play a big role in the future of the franchise, and to make fans wait with adventures without great consequences, but despite everything captivating, well carried out and sometimes proposing even welcome lighting on characters that we thought (too) knowing well. And then, playing thus with the possibilities, the characters and the situations, with all the comforts offered by the principle of the multiverse, is a dream of a screenwriter as much as a fan: the never denied success of fanfictions amateurs on the net is proof of this. So, let’s take advantage of the powers of the imagination without ulterior motive, this is all the evil that Marvel wishes us.
