Video games The Tokyo Game Show returns to a unique scale

(Chiba) After the years of Pandemia, the Tokyo Game Show, one of the biggest video game salons in the world, returns on a large scale near the Japanese capital, where visitors can discover until Sunday trends.

This show launched in 1996 has not been a major place of international ads devoted to the game for years. But while the American E3, one of the main world events in industry, has bowed out this year, the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) wishes to excel in its role as Japanese popular festival of the game.

“Compared to last year, there are a lot of exhibitors, which means that the TGS is very lively, it is a very good thing,” rejoices with AFP Keisuke Kikumoto, teacher in the game at the Nihon Kogakuin school, whose students came to show some of their creations.

After three editions reduced or organized online because of COVVI-19, the organizers announce for these four days-whose first two are reserved for professionals and the media-a record number of 787 exhibitors and 2291 games presented, on consoles, Mobiles or PCs.

Visitors facing the TGS exhibition halls in the capital’s high suburbs can thus try long -awaited local games like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Second part of the remake of the famous role -playing of the 1990s, the fighting game Tekken 8 Or Like A Dragon 8, Last opus in the series Yakuza.

PC game boom

Formerly reserved for consoles, many of these games are now the subject of a PC release, a rapid development platform in Japan in recent years, where the video game market is largely dominated by mobile games.

“Before the COVVI-19, the game on PC was not very visible” in the country, noted on Thursday William Yagi-Bacon, vice-president in charge of digital sales of the Japanese giant of the Capcom game, explaining that the lifestyles No more Hoasted Hoasted Pandemic had brought many players to try it.

“For the past five years, Japan has been one of the major markets that has experienced the fastest growth in the world on Steam,” said Erik Peterson, a play platform on PC.

The income generated by PC games in Japan increased in 2022 by 43 % over one year to 189.2 billion yen (1.2 billion euros in current courses), according to the Kadokawa ASCII Research Institute.

Many influencers of social networks also walk the aisles of the show, such as the Franco-Japanese Remi Anri Doi, former captain of the Japanese Handball team and one of the most followed Tiktok users in the archipelago.

“As I make live broadcasts of video games, it gives me the opportunity to keep me informed of new titles, to meet other creators and to have new ideas,” he explains to the AFP, saying in particular interested in use in the NFT games (“non-fungible token” or non-fungible token).

There blockchain very present

These unique digital works exist thanks to the technology of the block chain, or “blockchain”, on which the cryptocurrencies also rest. In video games, they are associated for example with characters or cards that players can exchange or monetize.

This practice is denounced by a part of the players as a form of cynicism and poorly seen by certain publishers like Mojang, who announced last year that he would no longer accept in his game Minecraft NFTs, deemed contrary to his “spirit”.

“In classic games, the objects that we have made or changed only exist in the game, but with the blockchain, they become” active “owned by the player, which can use them even if the game n ‘Exists anymore, even in another game, “explains AKARI OEDA, communications manager for OASYS, for his part.

This company developing its own block chain intended for video games has established partnerships with many major publishers, notably in Japan (Square Enix, Bandai Namco, Sega, etc.) and South Korea, where the playful applications of this technology meet a strong enthusiasm.

Among TGS exhibitors, French Ubisoft also presents its experimental title Champions Tactics Before going out in 2024, a game based on this technology which features fights between NFT figurines.
