LG OLED42C2: implementation

Design and manufacturing quality

The aesthetics of the LG OLED42C2 differs slightly from that of other models in the LG OLED C2 range. It adopts two feet in the place in place of the only central foot of the other references. The spacing between the two feet is 73 cm and is not adjustable. In addition, they only enhance the slab by 4.3 cm when they are in place. If you have to associate a sound bar, you will need a model that does not mask the bottom of the image.

In addition, as the slab is small, the chassis which accommodates electronics and connectors covers almost the entire rear surface. It is made in a beautiful quality cream color plastic.

The feet are in resin of the same color and seem robust. They can guide the different cables, helped by two removable pliers that keep them in place.

The slab in itself remains very fine, measuring just over 6 mm thick. It is adorned with a metallic flat field on all its periphery which gives it a successful premium side. Only the screen is just over 4 cm thick while with the feet, you reach 17 cm deep.

As on previous generations, the LG OLED42C2 is still not free from reflections in a bright room. The placement of the television must therefore be made with care if you do not want to suffer from it.

Image settings

The preset images of this LG OLED42C2 are well calibrated by default, including cinema and filmmaker modes. Two ISF modes are also present (light piece expert, day / expert dark part, night). The contrast and the brightness in these modes are well calibrated and the colors are fair and realistic. Note, however, that on Dolby Vision programs, Filmmaker and ISF modes are not available.

Standard mode is to be reserved in our opinion for TNT programs. We can however use it to view films and series during the day in an enlightened room.

Of course, you can always personally adjust the image settings from the dedicated menus of this LG TV.

The Video Games Optimization menu allows for access to specific gaming settings. They are displayed in a single uprising menu, bottom in the center of the screen. You can choose a image mode adapted to the type of game and customize it. We can also activate the different VRR modes as well as the low latency mode. It is also possible to reduce blue light and adjust the brightness in the dark areas of the image.

Very reactive, the LG OLED42C2 slab allows you to enjoy the games up to 4K 120 Hz without latency. Fluidity is to put with an always clear and detailed image.

4K HDR movies Dolby Vision

We were able to test the image quality of the LG OLED42C2 with some recent films in BLU-RAY 4K. Notably Moonly by Roland Emmerich and The Batman From Matt Reeves, both in Dolby Vision.

This OLED LG television is imperial on the highly contrasting spatial scenes. Thanks to the absolute black of the OLED and the increased brightness of this new generation slab, the image is sublime. The very bright areas of the image (stars, terrestrial atmosphere, shuttle controls in the cockpit) are extremely well rendered. Without reaching the brightness of a Qled slab, this OLED LG slab offers very intense and well nuanced highlights. These are all the better highlighted as rendering in the darkest areas is always as effective.

The images are also detailed and very chiseled with colors of very great accuracy. We are seduced by the natural of the image, especially during the close -ups on the heroes. Skin texture, hair details, tissue texture: everything is very realistic. We only regret one thing: not to have chosen a larger screen size for the test of this TV !

Upscaling TNT HD, Blu-ray and DVD

The LG OLED42C2 is effective on HD TNT programs with good quality upscaling. The α9 Gen5 video processor manages to increase the definition without distorting the image or generating artifacts.

Ditto on films in HD 1080p Blu-ray with which he does an excellent job of scaling. On Hobbit: an unexpected trip, We are won over by the image with surgical precision.

Upscaling of standard definition sources is also satisfactory. We have seen it in particular with the DVD of Batman Forever. The LG OLED42C2 thus manages to improve the overall quality of the image. This offers a little more details while retaining a certain sweetness. We are far from high definition but good quality DVDs are thus perfectly readable, without “scaring” the eyes.

Dolby Atmos Virtual

LG announces the management of the Dolby Atmos with a virtual audio reproduction out of 7.1.2 channels. In the field, the 2 x 10 Watts stereo audio section does not deserve but is content to widen the sound scene. Spatialization remains generally quite frontal and the effects are slightly overflowing the contours of the television without managing to wrap the spectators.

Always absent from LG, the management of DTS audio formats is regrettable. Even if the Dolby is in the majority of films and series, the DTS format always remains a reference for moviegoers.

Magic Remote remote control

The TV control interface is identical to the previous range with a single button under the facade. Active pressure the context menu then a brief pressure allows you to place from one command to another. We validate the choice by a long pressure.

Apart from the new screen size inaugurated by this LG OLED42C2, the main novelty lies in its OLED EVO panel brighter than the previous generation. The display of HDR content is thus improved in high lights, with more nuances and details as well as a higher level of contrast. On the upscaling side, LG seems to have further progressed and delivers an image always pleasant to look at, even with DVD sources. The audio section is unfortunately not up to it with a sound which remains generally quite frontal and requires the addition of a sound bar or a home cinema. The LG OLED48C1 does better on this point.

If you don’t have room for a 48 ”and absolutely want an OLED TV, the LG OLED42C2 is essential. If a superior model does not scare you, then consider the LG OLED48C1 whose performance is not so far away for a very affordable price.

Sony XR-42A90K

The Sony also takes on an OLED LG EVO slab sublimated by the image processing of the Cognitive Processor XR. Colorimetry is the strong point of this Sony, also compatible with Dolby Vision but which also offers a calibrated image mode for Netflix. Another advantage of this Sony, its management of DTS audio formats in addition to the Dolby makes it exhaustive on this point. Android TV with integrated chromecast offers more features and applications than webos, even if the latter has largely progressed. It is ultimately on the side of the gaming options that the LG OLED42C2 is truly pulled out of the game since it has a dedicated setting menu and offers G-SYNC and FREESYNC compatibility, absent on the Sony. The latter also pays dearly for his superiority in terms of image since he is billed € 700 more than the LG !

LG OLED42C2: conclusion

This LG OLED42C2 takes care of its image both on films in 4K HDR or HD 1080p as on TNT and video games. Although the brightness gain does not seem exceptional compared to the previous generation, it however makes it possible to improve the contrast and the rendering in the high lights. The very bright parts of the image thus seem more detailed and more nuanced. The Cinema Image and Filmmaker modes are also very well calibrated at the exit of the cardboard, to immediately enjoy a very beautiful image.

The audio section disappoints a little. The sound is clear and the dialogues always remain intelligible but spatialization lacks amplitude. The other televisions of the LG OLED C2 range are however better on this point. They adopt speakers dedicated to bass and the spatialization of the effects is broader.

As for most TVs, we will therefore benefit from associating hi-fi wireless speakers with the LG OLED42C2, placed on both sides of the screen. A compact soundbar like the LG QP5 Eclair or a more classic model like the LG SN7cy also constitute an ideal complement to this TV.
