The LG 65G1 stands out from other OLED televisions of the manufacturer by the perfect integration of electronics and a cable management system which allows you to completely tackle the TV on the wall. This model is also designed to be fixed to the wall. It is sold without a foot (an option at € 99), but with an invisible wall support. The LG 65G1 is marketed at a price of € 3500. It is also available in 55 inch version (LG 55G1) for around 2,300 € and 77 inch for 5,500 €.

All the brightness and colorimetry measures mentioned in this article were carried out with a C6-HDR spectracal probe and the Calmanate software.

Image quality

While we expected a brand new OLED panel, it is not, since the structure of the sub-pixels is simply identical to that of the LG 65CX of 2020. But we know that it is above all the cooling of the slab which makes it possible to increase the brightness and not necessarily the internal structure; As proof, the very bright Panasonic Hz2000 uses this same OLED slab. The functioning of the slab remains identical: each pixel is made up of four sub-pixels (a green, a red, a blue and a white). The white and red subpixels are larger to improve the maximum brightness of the slab, while maintaining a color temperature close to the 6500 k. As it is now a habit with OLED technology, vision angles are excellent. We have measured a loss of brightness of only 16 % at 45 ° and there is no variation on black – which is absolute. In comparison, loss of brightness is 35 % to 40 % on the best LCD televisions (Samsung QE75Q950TS and Sony Bravia KD-65XH9505) and 70 % on entry and mid-range models.

As often on LG OLED TV, FilmMaker Mode offer colors simply perfect. We have measured an average delta e at 1.3, much lower than the 3 threshold below which the human eye no longer perceives a difference between the colors displayed on the screen and the colors expected. No color exceeds a delta e of 3.

Like colors, the gamma is simply perfect (average value of 2.38, very close to the value 2.4 of reference). There is just a little start on the very clear gray which is imperceptible to the eye.

What to say about the color temperature apart that it is excellent. The curve is perfectly stable on the entire spectrum and the average is 6580 k, almost perfectly on the reference in video (6500 K).

As always, the contrast provided by this OLED panel is considered to be infinite. Indeed, even with a white calibrated at 150 cd/m², the black is measured at 0 CD/m² (our probe cannot measure a black less than 0.0049 CD/m²). This contrast is still as impressive and allows you to enjoy all the nuances, even in the full darkness.

The α9 (alpha 9) AI processor is slightly more efficient than α9 Gen 3. But as with competitors, progress from year to year is increasingly difficult to discern on our test scenes. The scaling engine – identical to that of 2020 – is still as efficient. It displays Full HD content on the ultra HD slab respecting the original source without creating artifacts. It is possible to improve the rendering by increasing the sharpness. Since the arrival of the α9 processor, the motion compensation engine has finally been at the level of that of Panasonic and Philips, and the α9 Gen 4 AI therefore comes from the same vein. Trumotion can always be handcrafted by managing the judder (de-Judder) for 24/25/30 Hz content and blurred areas (de-blur) for 50/60 Hz content. The biggest improvement concerns the insertion system of black images allowing to deceive retinal persistence (Oled Motion Pro). The latter now works without a sparkle in low or average mode.

Hdr

The LG 65G1 is compatible with HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision. On the other hand, LG ignores the HDR10+ promoted by Samsung and Panasonic.

The HDR rendering is impeccable and perhaps even a little too much. The reference EOTF curve (in yellow) is perfectly followed up to 70 % luminance before the TV only slightly smooths the curve. This smoothing is a little too light for us – in order to keep details in the very bright scenes – and unfortunately the activation of the HDR Display Tone Mapping does not change the situation. With an average delta e measured at 2.2, the colors can be considered as faithful to those sent by the source. The peak of brightness – which is the big novelty on this OLED G1 model – is measured at 782 cd/m². Compared to last year, the gain is impressive since the LG 65CX was satisfied with 665 cd/m². The LG 65G1 therefore earns more than 110 cd/m², or 17 % compared to last year. The promise therefore seems to be held, but in absolute terms, it remains very far from the peak of brightness proposed by the Panasonic 65Hz2000 with its 951 CD/m². The LG 65G1 luminosity peak associated with the infinite contrast of the OLED panel still allows you to display a very dynamic image that highlights HDR content, especially since the TV perfectly covers the spectrum of colors of colors DCI-P3 space, widely used by cinema.

Video games

In game mode, the delay in the display is measured at 15.2 ms, but this year is offering a new “boost” option via the “game optimizer” panel which makes it possible to reduce the delay in the display to only 9 , 6 ms. There is thus less than a delay image compared to the source at 60 Hz. There is no gap between the action at the controller and its repercussions on the screen. On the remanence side, OLED technology is still unrivaled on the market, with a time lower than millisecond; While the best LCD televisions cannot do better than 11 ms.

The game mode requires some adjustments to get a perfect image. The most important thing being to reduce the color temperature at least (image> ParameterSavancés> Color> White balance> Color temperature> hot 50). This done, the TV has a perfect image, even in game mode called “game optimizer”. Whether in SDR or HDR, the Delta E is still less than 3.

Like the LG GX from last year, the LG 65G1 keeps four HDMI 2 entries.1 Compatible with all the features of this new HDMI standard, namely 4K flows at 120 Hz, the VRR (variable refresh rais) which avoids tearing of image and jerks, allm (auto low latency mode) which Allows automatic passage in game mode when a console is detected or even the EARC for loss audio return. LG televisions are also the only ones to be compatible with the G-Sync-the VRR in the Nvidia sauce-and they are also compatible with the premium freesync (non pro since LG prefers that the TV manages the HDR layer).

Cloud

As on all OLED TVs on the market, each pixel is managed individually and there is therefore no cloud. The effects of banding (horizontal or vertical bands) are also absent from this model. The homogeneity of the brightness on the slab is excellent: we have measured the average gap of homogeneity of white on the whole of the 65 -inch slab at 7 %. This excellent result is again explained by the use of OLED technology.

A little word all the same on the marking problems encountered by some users. Very advanced tests have shown that the marking of modern OLED tiles is limited during current use. On the other hand, continuous information channels displaying bands with saturated colors (red, blue or green) can be problematic, especially when the brightness is pushed to the maximum. This risk exists and cannot be completely ignored. Remember that the television must be extinguished using the remote control and that it is not recommended to completely disconnect it from the current. Indeed, the television performs maintenance operations on the slab when it is on standby in order to preserve uniformity and precisely avoid marking problems. Since 2020, LG uses a fixed logos detection system which automatically reduces their brightness in order to limit the risk of marking. A wallpaper is also triggered very quickly (one minute) when it detects a fixed image.

Ergonomics

The LG 65G1 simply takes up the design of the LG GX of 2020. It is the only LG OLED model to abandon the central foot for two feet (optional) which are placed at the ends of the TV, spread of 136 cm. It is therefore necessary to provide a wide enough TV piece of furniture to accommodate it. The slab is raised by only 6.5 cm, which allows you to install certain bars of its.

This model is supplied with a so -called “invisible” wall support which allows you to completely tackle the TV on the wall. The installation is rather simple. Once mounted, the support even allows you to correct the TV base so that it is perfectly straight.

As often with OLED televisions, the edges of the screen are particularly fine, which limits footprint and authorizes installation in crazy places.

No evolution on the side of the anti -reflective filter of the OLED TV. Consequently, the LG OLED 65G1 does not better than all other OLED TVs, whose 2019 models. Unlike other OLED televisions of the manufacturer, who are very fine on the upper and larger part on the lower part embedding electronics, the LG 65G1 displays a uniform depth all over the slab. The thickness is only 1.99 cm. This model is obviously designed to be hung on the wall. With optional feet, the depth is 28.4 cm. This television is therefore comfortable on our reference TV furniture measuring 160 x 40 cm.

The back of the OLED LG 65G1 TV is far from being sober and we can see that it was thought of to be hidden. It was done to skillfully hide the cables. Please note, you still have to provide a plastic chute, or even make a bleeding in the wall to completely hide the cables when the TV is hanging on the wall. In our opinion, this system is a little less practical than the unique cable used by Samsung on its high -end televisions and its models using the One Connect case (see the Samsung QE75Q950TS test)).

This TV offers four HDMI 2 entries.1, three USB ports, an Ethernet port, an optical digital audio output, a helmet outlet, a PCMCIA port (CI+joint interface), a rake antenna connector and a satellite satellite. It also has a DVB-T/T2, DVB-S/S2 and DVB-C (TNT, satellite and cable) tuner, as well as WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 5.0 for connection with a wireless audio device (helmet or speaker).

The TV is also compatible Google Cast, Homekit and Airplay 2. Finally, the new Magic Explorer functionality authorizes contextual research according to the content on the screen (actor, director name, critic, etc.)).

With the Z1 8K model, the G1 is the only OLED model in the LG range to embark microphones directly in the TV for hand-free control.
