A slight evolution of the excellent C2 of last year, the C3 does not have the major asset of the high -end OLED tiles of this year, the MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology. The only model to be provided with LG will be the essential G3, which should bring its image quality to a higher level. However, C3, he deserves to be snubbed ? Its price, much more accessible than the premium version and its intrinsic qualities, would they not make it the model to favor this year, pending a price drop in OLED META ?

Our test model: the LG OLED65C35LA

For our test, we used an LG 65C5, with an ultra HD 10 -bit slab. The ladder on the brand’s “general public” OLED is none other than the OLED EVO EX, the flagship technology from last year, which would be slightly improved in 2023. To take advantage of this display, LG opted for an alpha 9 processor of 6ᵉ generation. It is also the use of the latest addition to homemade processors that would be at the origin of the performance gains of the slab, especially in terms of brightness, we will come back to it.

It’s beautiful, especially hanging on the wall

LG is now recognized for the manufacturing quality of its televisions and the C3 is no exception to the rule. Its relatively classic appearance does not prevent its manufacturer from having treated details with excellent quality in the finishes, and above all an impression of finesse that we find especially on the borders. In this area, this year’s model does not offer improvement on this point. It was the arrival of the OLED EX panel last year that had mainly reduced the edges from 10 mm to 6 mm. In 2023, we are on the same level of finesse. As for the foot, he does not change him either. It is a central model, nicely worked, but whose rendering cannot compete with that of the same C3 fixed to the wall.

For what ? Simply because in terms of cable passages (also called “Cable Management”), LG is not at the level of the best of its competitors. Its cable fixing system is very simple to use, but not the most effective to hide them. It’s a shame for a TV that borders on the 3,000 euros.

As for the remote control, it is absolutely identical to the models of the previous years. The pointer system still works as well with webos, as long as we take the time to live there. For the rest, LG believes to be always at the level of ergonomics, with a light and easy to use accessory. He is probably not wrong.

Image quality: progress, even light

The recipe for an efficient OLED at a “decent” price seems clear for LG in 2023. Use last year’s slab, with this year’s processor. Concretely, a good part of Korean hopes are based on the capacity of the A9 Gen6 and especially its technology Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro, to magnify content, HDR in particular.

By going from 5,000 to 20,000 image control zones, LG hopes to display an image quality in relation to its OLED from last year, in particular on the rendering of the most complex content, HDR in mind. In reality, progress is sensitive, regardless of content and it is on color loyalty that the work of LG engineers has the most relevance. Thus, the colorimetric rendering in Rec709 displays among the best values ​​measured by 01LAB. The Middle Delta was measured at 1.54, in filmmaker mode, which is simply excellent. On this point, the C3 is even slightly higher than the G2 last year (1.58). The same goes for content cut for cinema. The DCI-P3 ratio indicates excellent color spectrum cover, with here again a medium delta E less than 2.

HDR brightness and content

With the C3, the promise of LG is especially on the side of the brightness. This is the perpetual quest for OLED models, and the criterion that still gives the advantage to LCD slabs on certain types of content. Thus, despite a bright peak up at 861 cd/m2, the C3 will always show display limits in a room bathed in sunshine. In this case, he must also deal with an extremely brilliant slab, which despite the presence of a good anti-reflective filter, does not do miracles. Of course, it is in the dark that the LG OLED gives full measure of its capacities.

It is by putting in good viewing conditions that we realize the real performance of the C3 in cinema mode. The rendering of HDR content is stunning with a very dynamic image that benefits full of the “infinite” contrast of the OLED. Ultimately, what we found in terms of image quality on this C3 is very pleasant, but does not allow us to assert with authority that the “general public” OLED of this year is much better than that of ‘last year.

WEBOS WE HAVE OLD ?

This is now a tradition, LG televisions are running under the homemade bone, webos in its number 23 version. One of its characteristics remains its mode of navigation. The brand’s regulars always appreciate its pointer system as much using the remote control, for others, this way of interacting with the TV will require a slight adaptation time.

At first glance, the interface of this year evolves quite little. LG, like its competitors, to opt for an approach centered on content and recommendations and takes advantage of it to distill a little advertising cheerfully. Do we really want to have an advertising banner as a reception message when we spent 3,000 euros for your TV ? LG believes that this is an acceptable compromise, we are less certain. This preponderant place of advertising as well as an interface which knows some slight slowdowns in this new version, push us to review our judgment on Webos. Even if it is rather pleasant to use, the LG bone is now less complete and less ergonomic than Android TV or Tizen on Samsung TV.

There is still a novelty on webos this year, these are the “Quick Cards”. These are shortcuts that take specific TV settings and bring them together by domain. Thus, it is possible to order, via the television, all the home automation systems of the house via the dedicated Quick Card. Ditto for the music shortcut which brings together in one space all musical applications and affiliated content. This new feature will not radically change the way to use your TV, but sometimes save time. For the rest, webos is starting to show some signs of fatigue and if he regularly receives the addition of new features, he would benefit from evolving somewhat in his global approach.

Video game: LG always at the top

In recent years, LG has made a point of treating the gaming part of its televisions. As such, the C series, which is much more accessible than the G, constitutes a very first -rate choice for players. Until this year, only Samsung, managed to really compete with LG on this point, which brings a question: can C3 still progress on gaming ?

The first important data concerning this television is its delay in the display. The 01LAB measured this Input Lag at 13 ms, a very good value (less than 16 ms, the threshold from which the human eye is capable of perceiving the difference). LG also proposes to reduce this value thanks to its mode optimized for the game, but in this case, it is possible to see a slight image degradation. The C3 is also the model on which LG inaugurates QMS technology (Quick Media Switching)). This feature made possible by the HDMI 2 protocol.1 eliminates latency and other black screens of a few milliseconds during a passage of ordinary content to a 120 Hz image. In fact, it works perfectly and the transitions between our Xbox Series X and our Apple TV were made without the slightest hitch.

LG has also changed its “game bar” this year. From now on, it can be personalized according to the player’s user habits. Concretely, the upper part of the bar allows you to change your shortcuts, and facilitates access to the four most useful options. This addition does not fundamentally change the experience in play, but it is still welcome.

For the rest, the gaming part of this LG C3 is just as complete as classic (game modes depending on the genre, reduction of blue light, dark room mode and even a mode of energy reduction that lowers consumption of the consumption of TV by reducing image quality). With his latest OLED, LG confirms that he is attentive to the players and his TV status to play is absolutely not usurped.

Audio: the usual limits

Audio performance of the LG consumer OLED are distinguished by their relative mediocrity. Nothing ashamed, rest assured, but let’s say that it is not the C3 that will undermine the business bars of the brand of the brand. The TV audio system is sorely lacking in bass (a consequence of its finesse ?), but also of sound power. Result: the purchase of a soundbar is almost necessary if you want an audio up to image quality. This is the case on many televisions of competing brands, of course, but LG does not even pretend to try where others try to make up their weaknesses, or even come there. Damage.

The series of LG OLED C3 televisions is available in several sizes of 42, 48, 55, 65, 77 and 83 inch, which leaves a wide choice of diagonal according to its budget. This takes up the same slab as that of the C2 series last year, but promising an image all the same bright according to LG, which we will not fail to check in our test. With the latest generation of the Alpha9 processor, it also wants to offer a cutting -edge image processing as well as the most relevant gaming features.

Equipped with 4 HDMI 2 inputs.1 Supporting all the optimization functions for gaming, the TV intends to offer one of the delay for the lowest display on the market. Finally, this series benefits from the compatibility of DTS and WOW Orchestra, for perfect synchronization with a brand soundbar as well as the latest version of Webos, the entertainment system offered on LG TV with its share of new features. We were able to test the 65 inch version of this LG C3 series and here is our opinion about it.

LG OLED65C3 DESIGN, we take the same

The design of the LG OLED65C3 TV is identical to that of the previous series, C2, itself very similar to the C1 series. Note, however, that LG has this time planned two different feet. The 42 -inch model has the same feet as the B3 series (two at the ends) while those with a superior diagonal are equipped on the same foot as the C2 series, therefore central.

It was the latter that equipped our 65 -inch test model. As before, the foot is central with a front part which is tilted and which advances about 8 cm. It is fixed from the rear, thanks to four screws.

Count on a width of 47 cm and a depth of 23 cm, which allows it to be installed on a little wide furniture. Unlike the available foot available for the G3 series, it unfortunately does not allow the screen to be rotated. The latter is raised by 6 cm, which allows you to place a sound bar in front, taking into account the inclination and the advancement of the foot. LG offers, this year, a SC9C soundbar delivered with a foot harmonizing to perfection with the TV of the C2 and C3 series (55, 65 and 77 inch only). The LG SC9 3 soundbar.1.3 channels of 400 watts can be purchased separately.

The screen frame is extremely fine. It is only 6 mm thick at its top, where the TV is the finest to reach 5 cm at its base.

As on the previous series, at the back, there is a rather pretty textured pattern. The finishes of the test model loaned by the brand for this article were perfect and the device suffered from no manufacturing defect, despite a meticulous examination of all its surfaces.

The weight of the LG OLED55C2 TV had particularly challenged us, because they are very low compared to other TVs on the market. That of the C3 does not disappoint either: count 18.5 kg with the foot for the 65 inch model, like the C2 of the same diagonal. Note the possibility of hanging the TV on the wall via a suitable fixing medium, to the VESA300X200 standard.

To return to the foot of the TV, at the rear, it incorporates a guide system that allows you to organize the cable leak to the rear. On the back of the TV itself, a plastic plate allows you to hide the screws and help the organization of the cables, without forgetting the two plastic parts which are clipped to guide all the wires towards the center, exactly as The previous series. It’s very well thought out, and so very well organized. Also practical: all connectors are directed to the side of the TV except for the PCMCIA port which is oriented upwards.

All the sockets are therefore oriented towards the side of the device, which greatly facilitates their access, especially if the screen is fixed to a wall support. We find the same connectors on the C2 series, but also on the G3 series.

There are therefore three USB-A ports, four HDMI 2 inputs.1 including an EARC (HDMI 2), an Ethernet port, a digital optical audio output, an antenna socket, another for satellite reception. HDMI 2 entries.1 support ultra HD signals up to 120 Hz as well as the QMS function to go gently from one source to another. Also note the presence of a port for the infrared postponement cable (delivered with the TV) which thus allows to deport the transmitter located on the front, and thus have more possibilities to place a sound bar in front of the screen. The television is Wi-Fi compatible (802.11 AC), a wireless connection to be favored rather than using the Ethernet bond, as less efficient.

By the way, note that the G3 series offers Wi-Fi 6, more efficient. There is also Bluetooth 5.0. No socket to connect a helmet directly, which some may regret. Connectivity is therefore wide. We can however blame him for offering Wi-Fi 5 when, for example, the latest Samsung TV models include 6th Wi-Fi (for example the TQ75QN800C), much more efficient and less subject to interference, for example.

A word on the screen marking which can happen on certain OLED televisions. To overcome this, LG offers maintenance functionalities of the slab. They are found in the device settings. In addition, we can always count on the triggering of a watch screen (fireworks) which automatically arrives after only three minutes of inactivity. It’s slower than Philips (two minutes of inactivity), but faster than Panasonic (5 minutes). At the same time, the integrated processor is able to detect the logo display in the image and locally reduce the light intensity to protect the slab and limit the risk of marking.

LG OLED65C3 Image: Excellent treatment and a little brightness in addition

The LG OLED65C3 TV therefore has an OLED EVO 10 -bit slab covering 65 inch diagonal, like the C2 series. It is capable of displaying an ultra HD definition of 3840 x 2160 pixels with a frequency of 100/120 Hz. In the photos taken under the microscope, we can notice the identical structure between the slab of the C2 series and that of the C3 series.

Compared to the G3 slab, the latter benefits from an absent cooling system of the C2 series, but also and above all a microlantilles panel which allows it to offer a peak of brightness much higher than the previous G2 series which was devoid of it. Technically, this allows the brand’s highest -end model to offer a brighter image.

Vision angles are extremely wide here as on previous models. We also take advantage of a good anti -reflective filter which does not have a pinkish shade like that of the G3, even if it is still not a question of erasing a bay window in full sunny day, but which can be enough to remove a few small Light sources.

The integration of the latest version of the alpha9 image processor, 6th generation, allows you to offer even more power to the TV in order to obtain better reactivity in images adjustments. The precision is slightly higher compared to the previous generation concerning in particular the scaling of content. We are therefore entitled to extremely detailed scenes with a very good dive as well as a certain dynamism. We also appreciate the excellent treatment in the compensation of movements, offering net contours even on objects moving at full speed, especially when viewing sports programs.

For films and series, the LG OLED65C3 TV offers a really sublime image. It is respectful of the original colorimetry, resulting in excellent quality and very good color fidelity, especially in FilmMaker mode. There are many details on the different scenes, even with dark areas and others much clearer on the same image. TV does not hide anything and offers a very nice field depth. Skin shades are excellent and particularly realistic. Tone mapping management is excellent, better than the previous one, thanks to the Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro function which this time uses 20,000 analysis zones against 5,000 areas before.

Enhancer expression function which also acts on HDR management works perfectly. The details are numerous and the gradient of whites is very good, especially in the very clear areas of the image. As on the previous series, we take advantage of an improvement in object recognition compared to the background to make scenes more realistic.

Blacks are still as deep and there is, it is obvious (but it is better by writing it), no blooming effect. The contrast can be considered infinite, the pixels which can extinguish one by a. During our tests, the ties displayed on the screen tended to produce a certain persistence which, fortunately, fades after a few seconds. This phenomenon present, especially on white ties (on a black background) had not been noticed on the G3 series or on the previous ones.

The television offers the same image modes as previous generations: standard, cinema, filmmaker, light expert, dark expert, game optimizer, personalized image. As usual, it is the Filmmaker mode that makes it possible to get the best results for a really “rendering” movie theater »». With standard images, non -HDR, we measured an average delta e of 1.09, a level much lower than the threshold of 3, under which the human eye can no longer make the difference between the requested color and that displayed on the screen. In cinema mode, we obtained a value of 1.88 which is also excellent. For the vast majority of users, the default parameters are enough, but perhaps not for the most demanding. These can also find, within parameters, an image calibration system. Designed in partnership with Display Studio, the Calman software publisher that we use to make the measurements.

In dark expert mode, we noted an average delta e of 1.25, and 3.4 for the luminous expert mode which boosts the brightness to the detriment of the accuracy of the colorimetry. Always on SDR images in FilmMaker mode, we have noted an average color temperature of 6484 k which is really excellent, because it is extremely close to the target value which is 6500 k. In addition, the curve deviates very little from the perfect temperature.

The gamma curve is also very well followed on the whole gray scale up to 90 % to then fall to the value of 95 %, then offering lighter images which they should not be. The average gamma was measured at 2.36 for an expected value of 2.4 in viewing in dark conditions. The cinema mode gives a gamma at 2.17 and a color temperature curve that drifts a little more, but with, ultimately, a very good average since it was measured at 6491 k. Colorimetric space Rec.709 is covered in whole which is not really a surprise and thus allows you to enjoy the most extensive colors in this register.

The TV supports HLG, HDR10, Dolby Vision and Dolby Vision IQ modes. He always ignores the HDR10+ supported at Philips, Hisense, Panasonic and Samsung, for example. For HDR content, in filmmaker mode, once again, we were able to measure a perfect color fidelity since we noted an average delta e of 0.81, which is really excellent and does not require, from our point of view, No modification in the default settings. In cinema mode, we noted an excellent Delta e of 0.89 on average.

In Filmmaker mode, we measured a brightness peak of 835 cd/m² for a window of 10 %, a value greater than that offered by the C2 (780 CD/m² under the same conditions). This remains much lower than the brightness peak proposed by the G3 series which benefits remember it from a cooling system and a MLA panel (micro lens array) to increase the brightness. The LG C3 is therefore better in terms of brightness than the Sony A80L series taking on a similar slab on which we measured a brightness of 709 CD/m². As on the previous series, the LG C3 models of 42 and 48 inches offer a slightly behind the brightness peak compared to the other diagonals available in this series. LG indicates that these TVs cannot be much brighter than what they offer, especially due to the size of their pixels which limits the outlet of the slab from the slab.

Finally, the TV covers the DCI-P3 color space at 97.20 % and the BT2020 at 71.43 %, which is satisfactory.

LG OLED65C3 GAMING: What happiness

Like the series C1, C2, G1 and G2 in previous years, the new C3 series includes optimization functions for gaming. The most demanding players can enjoy 4 HDMI 2 tickets.1 to 48 Gbit/s, which is not so common, and VRR optimization functions for variable frequencies, allm for the reduced response time, as well as the Freesync Premium, G-Sync compatibility of Nvidia and Hgig. Note in this respect that, like the previous generation, you can benefit from access to online game platforms Nvidia GeForce Now, Utomik and Blacknut. Just connect a bluetooth controller and you can start playing.

The TV accepts Ultra HD signals at 120 images per second and the Dolby Vision up to 120 Hz.
