Horrific experience is often more frightening lived alone. However, horror games are not closed in multiplayer mode. Several of them, of variable quality, have appeared in recent decades. Below is a list of the main multiplayer horror games and/or coop to do with friends and/or online:

The different types of horrifying multiplayer games

• Asymmetrical: In this type of games, players do not all have the same role. One of them embodies a killer trying to track down and eliminate his opponents. Players embodying survivors must cooperate and use their special skills to escape their pursuer.
• Cooperative / survival: In this type of horrific games, players must organize themselves and use the resources at their disposal to survive hostile land.
• Cooperative / Action: These games are more based on action. For example, they will ask you to eliminate a large number of enemies with your partner. Coordination and organization will be necessary to allow players to achieve their objectives.
• Narrative / choice: These are essentially narrative games incorporating mechanics of choice. In multiplayer, this mode adds new possibilities. The scenes can for example be seen from another angle. It is also possible to ask different players to make the decisions.
• Investigation : In a horrific investigation game, players must find clues to lift the veil on paranormal events while managing to survive.

Some games can of course be straddled between several genres.

Solo horror games integrating a multi mode

At the end of the 2000s and early 2010s, multiplayer was fashionable. It is thus often integrated into licenses first thoughts as solo experiences. Dead Space 2 as an example of a multi -mode. The latter is played in four against four. Players take turns control of humans or necromorphs. Human players must fulfill goals in several rooms, while space monsters seek to prevent them. The following, Dead Space 3 was clearly thought of for a multiplayer mode. A decision that will have disappointed certain historical fans of the Electronic Arts license. Resident Evil 5 has also followed a similar logic, even if the game remains playable solo.

The Last of Us first of the name was also hailed for its multiplayer mode, Factions. This focuses more on the clashes between humans rather than infected. The player indeed chooses a faction (hunters or fireflies). He will then have to grow and survive his team as part of three different game modes. The horrific aspect is therefore not very present, which is why it is not in the table above.

Horror and multiplayer go hand in hand ?

Horror games regularly play on the feeling of the player’s isolation to arouse fear or dread. This aspect is obviously less present in multiplayer mode. The latter highlights the cooperation aspect to survive in a hostile world. It also simply allows some to spend good times with friends. Do not hesitate to suggest other multiplayer horror games or in coop that are not present in the table above !

Too trouillard to play survival-horrors until I was 18. In 2008, Dead Space was my first gateway to this universe. I have since caught up, both in terms of classics (Resident Evil, Silent Hill. ) that independent games.
