Vélo’V, self -service bikes and scooters

Launched in 2005 by Greater Lyon, Vélo’v is one of the very first self -service bicycle rental systems. In 2018, 8.5 million bicycle routes were carried out in Lyon.

Vélo’V: Listed bikes in Lyon and Villeurbanne

The Grand Lyon makes available to residents of a park of 5,000 robust and comfortable bikes called Vélo’V, spread over 428 stations in 22 municipalities. Available 24 hours a day 24 and 7 days a week, Vélo’v establishes a new urban conviviality and encourages “leisure” cyclists to use their personal bike more to move around. Result: since 1995 cycling has tripled in Lyon.

Rent a bike is easy and quick:

  • You show up at a Vélo’V station
  • You identify yourself
  • You take your bike
  • You circulate
  • You hang it up with another network station

Lyon City Card incorporates the Vélo’V offer. For 3 euros in addition when purchasing this card, this offer allows you to access Vélo’V for 3 consecutive days and to benefit from 60 minutes offered on each trip !

E-Vélo’v: the electric bike

Since February 20, 2020, half of the bikes can ride with an electric battery. A good way to move faster and climb – without sweating – the climbs of Lyon. The batteries are for rent by subscription at the rate of 7 euros / month on Velov.Grandlyon.com or on the official bike app (to download for free):

To subscribe, simply go to your Vélo’V account and subscribe to The E-Vélo’v option. You then have the choice between the free removal of the battery at the Vélo’V counter (in the Citiz/LPA premises, 13 rue Antoine Salles, Lyon 2) or sending your battery home to.

The Vélo’V battery works as a “normal” external battery and it can even be used to recharge your smartphone !

Myvélo’v, long -term electric rental

News from the Vélo’V service: the possibility of Rent an electric bike from 1 month to 1 year old. A good way to test this mode of travel before possibly taking the plunge for a purchase. Since June 30, 2018, 100 bikes have been available in cycle stores and 400 additional electric bikes will be renting at the start of the school year in September. Objective: 1,000 Myvélov by 2019.

Self-service electric scooters

These scooters are not connected to any terminal. To use them, you must download the free application available on iOS and Android. The rental is billed 1 euro, then 25 cents per minute.

Based on the highway code and local regulations in force, the traffic and parking rules applicable to these services are as follows,:

  • The speed is limited to 20 km/h, except in pedestrian areas where speed limited to 6km/h and in large parks (head of gold, Blandan and Gerland) limited to 10km/h,
  • Driving a self-service scooter is authorized from 18 years old,
  • Depending on the sectors, parking is compulsory in a location provided for this purpose.

The following rules also apply to all scooters whether in self -service or not:

  • Passenger transport is prohibited,
  • Traffic on the sidewalks is also prohibited.

In Lyon, the two operators authorized to offer their services are

Dott and Tier Mobility were selected for their ecological ambition and the balance of the services offered.

Concerning the safety of people and respect for public space, Operators’ commitments relate in particular to the following points:

  • User age verification (18 years required),
  • Establishment of a “beginner mode”, with a clamping at 15km/h to facilitate the grip of the scooter;
  • Implementation of a compulsory reactivity test to avoid drunk driving
  • A pricing encouraging the wearing of the helmet;
  • Registration of scooters for a simpler identification of offenders and facilitate the application of sanctions by operators;
  • Reinforced sanctions in the event of an offense. Operators will be able to apply financial penalties or exclusion from service to users who do not respect the rules. Operators will regularly organize awareness campaigns with the public, to better know the traffic rules in public space.

From the point of view of environmental exemplarity, The two operators were committed to the following points:

  • Lighting the lifespan of scooters of 4 years currently at 5 or 7 years depending on operators, by repairing and reconditioning the fleets already in service.
  • 100% electric logistics;
  • A supply of renewable energy;
  • End -of -life batteries reused in less demanding uses or reconditioned by French companies;

For more social justice in access to services, operators offer united pricing, with a reduction of 75% on journeys or packages for beneficiaries of the free solidarity TCL contract.

Finally, 100% of the teams are salaried and the operators of Dott and Tier Mobility undertake not to have recourse to the self-entrepreneurship.
