Use an iPhone as a web camera on a mac
With the continuity camera, you can use your iPhone as a web or micro mac camera and take advantage of the powerful iPhone camera and other video effects. You can make a wireless connection or use a USB cable for a wired connection.
Before you start
Before you can use the continuity camera functionality, you must proceed as follows:
- Make sure your Mac works under the latest version of MacOS Ventura and that your iPhone works under the last versions of iOS 16.
- Connect your two devices to the same Apple identifier.
- Activate the Wi-fi and Bluetooth on both devices.

- Prepare your iPhone. Consult the Apple Continuity Camera Assistance item: Use the iPhone as a web camera for Mac to get more information to prepare your iPhone.
Use an iPhone as a web or micro camera
- On your Mac, open any application with access to the camera or to the microphone, like FaceTime or Photo Booth.
- In settings or the menu bar, choose your iPhone as a photo or micro camera. The continuity app opens on your iPhone and begins to capture audio or video using the rear camera.
Noticed : To use your iPhone as a microphone on an integrated Mac without an integrated camera, the iPhone must be in landscape orientation, fixed and locked.
- Put the video or audio in break: On your iPhone, touch a break or slide up to unlock it.
- Resume video or audio: On your iPhone, press Return or touch the side or standby/reactivation button to lock it.
- Stop using your iPhone as a web or micro camera: Leave the app on your mac.

Automatically switch to the iPhone camera
Your Mac can automatically move on to use the iPhone as a camera for some Mac apps, such as FaceTime and Photobooth. For this, your iPhone must:
- Be close to your mac
- Have a locked screen
- Be in landscape orientation
- Having your rear cameras (s) in front of you without obstacles
- Do not be in a pocket or flat on a desk
- Be stationary

Set your iPhone as a default microphone
You can adjust your iPhone as a default microphone for your Mac.
- On your Mac, choose the Apple menu
> System settings, then click SOUND in the sidebar. (You may have to scroll down). Open Sound settings
Activate office view and video effects

- Check the following points:
- Your iPhone is an iPhone XR or more recent.
- Your iPhone works under the latest version of iOS 16.
- Your Mac works under the latest version of MacOS Ventura.
- The continuity camera is activated on your iPhone in Settings> General> Airplay and Handoff.
- Your iPhone recognizes the Mac as a trusted computer. Consult the Apple assistance article about the “Trust this computer” alert on your iPhone or iPad.
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and two factors are activated on your iPhone and Mac.
- Your iPhone and Mac are connected with the same Apple identifier. (This function does not work with the Apple managed identifiers.))
- Your iPhone and Mac are 9 meters away from each other.
- Your iPhone does not share its cellular connection, and your Mac does not share its Internet connection.
- The video app of your choice is up to date.
Noticed : If your Mac is not equipped with an integrated camera, your iPhone must meet all the conditions to automatically switch to the iPhone camera in order to appear as a camera.
