It is a real revolution in Lotus. The English brand, which is obviously associated with light sports cars, widens its horizons to try to conquer new markets and a new audience. And after the electric electricity, electricity now rhymes with SUV.
Elerte opens a new phase in the history of the brand. And not content with being the first Lotus SUV, it is also its first five -door car and its very first standard electric car. Lotus obviously put a lot on its new model. And for that, the Hethel firm can count on an avalanche of innovations that propel Lotus into a new dimension.
LOTUS 2.0
A lotus, in the collective unconscious, is a compact and low car. With the Elerte, it’s quite the opposite. It is even a large baby with 5.10 meters long, a width of 2.13 meters and a height of 1.63 meters. Impressive figures, so much so that the British SUV is 7 cm longer than an already imposing Tesla Model X !
Premium vehicle obliges, its prices are generally modeled on the models that we know today, even if the eletre pushes the cursor of sportiness a little further. Basically, the Eletre has a power of 603 hp and 700 Nm, for a 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and a maximum speed of 258 km/h. The autonomy of 600 km on the WLTP cycle is provided by a huge 112 kWh battery. Elter under this configuration starts from 96,890 euros, barely more expensive than an audi e-tron sportback 55, which claims 93,700 euros 408 hp and 410 km of autonomy.
As standard, the Eleter receives, among other things, electric front seats at 12 settings, a quadri-zone automatic air conditioning, 20-inch rims, a 15.1-inch OLED 15.1-inch touch screen, a head-up display, A Kef Premium audio system with 15 speakers and 1,380 W or an active pneumatic suspension. Autonomous driving functions are also part, with a Lidar system.
A relatively simple range
Above the “basic” version, we find the Elter S invoiced 122,090 euros. It receives the same technical characteristics as the entry -level version, but has some additional equipment such as an active rear spoiler, configurable room lighting, lit door thresholds, a “soft closed” door closure, Electrosal exterior mirrors or a Kef Audio Reference Audio system with 23 speakers and 2,160 W. Not necessarily enough to justify an additional 25,000 euros, even if customers of this kind of cars appreciate having a fully equipped vehicle.
| Power | Rate | |
| Elegant | 603 CH | 96,890 euros |
| Elter S | 603 CH | 122,090 euros |
| Elter R | 905 hp | 152,090 euros |
The range is wearing by the Eletre R, the most powerful model in the range with its 905 hp and 985 Nm. It only takes 3.0 seconds to reach 100 km/h from the stop, while the maximum speed is 265 km/h. Reverse of the medal, its autonomy, which drops at 490 km since the battery remains 112 kWh. This version has the rear steps, active anti-roll bars, a track mode or even a few carbon fiber elements. His price ? 152,090 euros, excluding any options. It is more expensive than the Tesla Model X Plaid, which claims 141,990 euros for its 1,020 hp.
See you next year
Made in China, the first Elter Lotus will be delivered from the summer of 2023. It will be positioned in front of the Audi e-tron, Tesla Model X and other Mercedes Eqs SUV, even if the Eletre plays clearly on the dynamic aspect.
It is still necessary that customers are there and agree to roll with an electric lotus SUV, which goes completely against the philosophy of the brand. “Light is right”, of course, but Lotus has taken care not to reveal the weight of his machine yet, which must certainly go far beyond the two tons, despite its aluminum bodywork.
Lotus elere, prices, performance, but.
Once, twice. Thrice. I would have filmed several times around this Lotus Elter, the first lifestyle vehicle (Lotus dixit) of the small English brand. The designers managed to take up elements of the design of the Lotus sports cars (Emira, Evora) in this SUV. In the back in particular. But resuming the characteristics of a small two -seater sports car on a large SUV is not easy, and we can’t say that Lotus has succeeded. A Ferrari Purosangue is much more successful aesthetically. And classic SUVS, BMW X5 or Hyundai Santa Fe, are more pleasant to the eye. But let us specify it without further delay, this car has absolutely nothing English. By joining the Geely group, Lotus’ activities were divided. Sports cars will remain of English design and manufacture, but lifestyle cars (SUVS, Crossovers and others) are 100 % Chinese.
The surprise then is that it’s a big car. 5.10 m long for 2.02 m wide and 1.64 m wide. It imposes, and especially in yellow. We are not used to seeing a big yellow machine like that on our roads. It is therefore a lotus, since like Port-Salut, it is written on it, and failing the appearance, it should have the performance. At least in a straight line. Lotus has just opened orders on the French market, there are 3 versions. The basic model, with 603 hp, at € 97,890. Then the Eletre S, with the same power but much more equipment at € 123,090, and at the top, the Eletre R, 905 hp, at 153,090 €. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds. It is important to specify the masses. 2490, 2600 and 2740 kg. Yes, a lotus of 2740 kg. This will be more than 3 tonnes in motion during family holidays. The times are changing. Colin Chapman is no longer there.
The Lotus Eletre R is cheaper than Porsche Taycan Turbo S, and it will undoubtedly constitute an alternative to a Tesla Model X, but there will be no former Lotus customer to be interested in it, either ecologist either.
The Chinese are right to develop Lotus thus ?
