The new LG OLED C2 series is available in several sizes: 42, 48, 55, 65, 77 and 83 inches. It renews the premium offer offered by LG, just below the high -end G2 series, designed to hang on to a wall like a painting.

The LG C2 televisions take advantage of the OLED EVO slab developed by LG Display to try to offer a peak of brightness as high as possible, one of the weaknesses of this technology against LCD screens. They embark the 5th generation of the Alpha9 processor which manages HDR optimizations as well as scaling, among other elements. They also offer the same gaming functions as previous models with 4 HDMI 2 entries.1 and a time late to the promised display as one of the lowest on the market. Webos, the integrated control and entertainment system wins some practical and relevant features.

LG OLED55C2 DESIGN

The design of the LG 55C2 TV is quite similar to that of the C1 series from last year. This model is installed on a central aluminum foot which is slightly tilted forward.

It exceeds about 8 cm in front of the screen (for a total depth of 24 cm) and it takes a width of 47 cm to install it comfortably on a piece of furniture. However, a hanging on the wall is possible via a fixing support at the VESA300 standard. On its foot which unfortunately does not allow to rotate the television as on the LG OLED65G2, the screen is raised by 6 cm, which leaves room for a fairly fine sound bar despite everything.

The foot is less wide than on the C1 series.

The screen frame is extremely fine. It is the least thick that we have seen so far since it offers a black frame around the slab of only 3 mm, to which must be added 2 mm of metal border. This goes around the screen 7 mm thick. It is perfectly straight and ends the TV perfectly. The tested model suffered from no manufacturing defects.

At the rear, a large part contains electronics. The whole is completely flat, measuring a little less than 4 cm thick. Note the slight texture of the rest of the rear panel, very pretty to our taste. There too, the finishes are perfect and we appreciate the manufacturer’s care on this point.

In addition to its dimensions, we are too much talking about the weight of the TV. However, here, there is really something to say since the 55 inch C2 model is only 16 kg with its foot against a weight of 23 kg for the 55 inch C1 ! Same idea on the 65 inch version which goes from 32.6 kg to 18.5 kg !

To come back to the foot of the TV, it contains a system of guide-and-and-legged cables to rear cables. On the back of the TV itself, a plastic plate hides the screws and facilitating the organization of the cables, without forgetting the two parts which are clipped to guide all the wires towards the center. It is very well thought out and very well organized. Also practice: all connectors are directed to the side of the TV except for the PCMCIA port.

Unlike almost all connectors from other TVs, here, all the catches are oriented towards the side of the device, which greatly facilitates their access. There are three USB-A ports, four HDMI 2 inputs.1 including an EARC (HDMI 2), an Ethernet port, a digital optical audio output, an antenna socket, another for satellite reception. Also note the presence of a port for the infrared postponement cable (delivered with the TV) which thus makes it possible to deport the transmitter located on the front, and thus have more freedom to place a sound bar in front of the screen.

The TV is Wi-Fi compatible (802.11 AC), a wireless connection to favor rather than using the Ethernet bond, as less efficient. There is also Bluetooth 5.0. Some may regret the disappearance of the headphone jack presents last year, but also absent from the manufacturer’s G2 series.

A word on the screen marking which can happen on certain OLED televisions. To overcome this, LG offers maintenance functionalities of the slab. They are found in the device settings. In addition, one can always count on the triggering of a watch screen (fireworks) which automatically arrives after only 1 minute of inactivity. At Philips, the watch screen is triggered after 2 minutes of inactivity. At Panasonic, you have to wait 5 minutes to see the watch screen trigger. At the same time, the integrated processor is able to detect the logo display in the image and locally reduce the light intensity to protect the slab and limit the risk of marking.

The LG OLED55C2 TV therefore has an OLED EVO 10 -bit slab covering 55 inch diagonal. It is able to display an ultra HD definition of 3840 × 2160 pixels with a frequency of 100/120 Hz. In the photos taken under the microscope, we can actually see that there is a difference between the slab used last year on the C1 and the one integrated on the C2. Compared to the G2 slab, the latter benefits from an absent cooling system on the C2 series. Technically, this allows the brand’s highest -end model to offer a brighter image.

Vision angles are extremely wide here as on previous models. We also take advantage of a good anti -reflective filter, even if there is still no question of eating a bay window in the middle of a sunny day, but which may be enough to remove some small light sources.

The integration of the latest version of the Alpha9 image processor provides more power to the TV to obtain better responsiveness in the potential images adjustments. The precision is higher compared to the previous generation, in particular concerning the scaling of content. The result is extremely detailed scenes and offering excellent dynamism. We also appreciate the treatment in the compensation of movements which is really excellent, offering net contours even on objects moving at full speed, especially when viewing sports programs.

For films and series, the LG OLED55C2 TV offers a really sublime image. It is quite respectful of the original colorimetry to offer excellent quality and very good color fidelity. There are multiple details on the different scenes, even with dark areas and others much clearer on the same image. TV manages to modulate so as not to hide anything and offer a good depth of field.

Like the G2 series, it benefits from better management of Tone Mapping thanks to the Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro function which uses 5000 analysis zones against 500 last year. Thus, the details are more numerous than on the previous generation in very clear areas with a better gradient of whites. In addition, recognition of objects compared to the background is also improved in order to make scenes more realistic.

The TV offers the same image modes as the previous generations. This is the mode Moviemaker best results. With standard images, non -HDR, we measured an average delta e of 1.04, a level much lower than the threshold of 3, under which the human eye can no longer make the difference between the requested color and that displayed on the screen.

In mode Movie theater, We have obtained a value of 1.81 which is also excellent. For the vast majority of users, the default parameters are enough, but perhaps not for the most demanding. These can also find within settings, an image calibration system, designed in partnership with Display Studio the Calman software publisher that we use to make the measurements. On this subject, note for the record that as on the G2 slab, the system allows a calibration on a much higher number of points than all other brands also offering this type of operation, which must make the process well more precise.

Always on SDR images in mode Moviemaker, We have noted an average color temperature of 6416 k, which is really excellent, because it is extremely close to the desired value (6500 k). In addition, the curve deviates very little from the perfect temperature. The gamma curve is also rather well followed throughout the gray scale for an ideal average value, since measured at 2.4, the expected value.

The mode Movie theater gives a gamma at 2.2 and a color temperature curve that drifts a little more, but with, ultimately, a very good average since it was measured at 6394 k. Colorimetric space Rec.709 is covered in whole, which is not really a surprise and thus allows you to enjoy the most extensive colors in this register.
