LG 65C2 test: the versatile OLED TV that gives us full view

The C series of LG evolves in small touches, but 2022 is a happy new year since the LG 65C2 has won a new OLED EVO slab, a slightly more powerful processor, microphones integrated in the TV and the Always Ready functionality. What further improve one of the references to the television market.

Presentation

The LG 65C2 has the new OLED EVO 10 bits of 65 inch (≈165 cm) always displaying an ultra HD definition of 3840 x 2160 pixels. Already seen last year on the LG 55G1, this OLED panel is supposed to offer an improved brightness peak compared to the LG C1 released from last year. In the novelties department, we find the new α9 (Alpha 9) gen 5 AI processor, which is a slight evolution of the α9 Gen 4 last year, a microphone integrated into the TV allowing the LG assistants to use, Amazon Alexa or Google without having to touch the remote control, the Magic Remote 2021 remote control inaugurated last year, the new version of Webos with profile management and a new Always Ready mode well thought out and practical.

The LG 65C2 TV is marketed at a price of € 2,700. It is also available in the following diagonals at the corresponding rate:

It is the only LG OLED TV to be available in 42 inch version. Small clarification, moreover, the LG 42C2 and 48C2 models offer a slightly behind in relation to larger models.

All the brightness and colorimetry measures mentioned in this article were carried out with a C6-HDR spectracal probe and the Calmanate software.

Image quality

The LG 65C2 is exploiting a new oled slab different from the OLED evo slab seen on the LG 65G1 from last year. According to LG, this model has the new OLED EX slab, which does not have the cooling system of the LG G2 allowing to push the brightness to the maximum. The functioning of the slab remains identical: each pixel is made up of four sub-pixels (a green, a red, a blue and a white). The white and red subpixels are larger to improve the maximum brightness of the slab, while maintaining a color temperature close to the 6500 k. As it is now a habit with OLED technology, vision angles are excellent. We have measured a loss of brightness of only 18 % at 45 ° and there is no variation on black – which is absolute. In comparison, loss of brightness is 35 % to 40 % on the best LCD televisions (Samsung QE75Q950TS and Sony Bravia KD-65XH9505) and 70 % on entry and mid-range models.

As often on LG OLED TV, FilmMaker mode offers colors simply perfect. We have measured an average delta e at 1.3, much lower than the 3 threshold below which the human eye no longer perceives a difference between the colors displayed on the screen and the colors expected. No color exceeds a delta e of 3. With an average value of 2.32, the gamma is sufficiently close to the reference value to reproduce loyal gray levels. The color temperature is perfect. The average of 6650 k is very close to the reference curve and the curve is perfectly stable on the whole spectrum. As always, the contrast provided by this OLED panel is considered to be infinite. Indeed, even with a white calibrated at 150 cd/m², the black is measured at 0 CD/m² (our probe cannot measure a black less than 0.0049 CD/m²). This contrast is still as impressive and allows you to enjoy all the nuances, even in the full darkness.

On paper, the α9 (Alpha 9) Gen 5 processor is more efficient than α9 Gen 4 last year. In fact, it is very complicated to make the difference between the two processors on our test scenes. The scaling engine is still as efficient and displays Full HD content on the ultra HD slab while respecting the original source without creating artifacts. The motion compensation engine is always excellent, with perfectly clear motion objects.
