Kobo or Kindle in 2023: Comparative of Liseuses brands
Let’s start with the Kindle readers.
Kindle 2022 vs kobo nia: what cheap reader buy in 2023 ?
You are looking for a electronic reader cheap ? Two models are currently standing out: the Kobo Nia and the Amazon Kindle (2022). Sold around € 100, these small machines dedicated to reading are ideal for taking with you your library of e-books. But, what is the most suitable for your needs ? This is what you will discover in our comparison !
- Unbeatable value for money !
- 300 ppp screen, as at the top of the range
- An almost complete reader as paperwhite
- Non -slip shell
- Manages the EPUB format
- Very easy to use system
After having dissected the large format digital notepads that are the Kindle Scribe and the Kobo Elipsa 2nd, we are going today at the entrance.
The two rival brands therefore put their gloves for a new muscular match. This time, it’s aging Kobo Nia who will have to face the young 2022 Kindle.
If this match seems unbalanced at first, you will see that the reader Kobo still has it under the pedal. It could even be a better choice for many readers !
But, trurs of gossip, let’s move on to the comparative. You will discover each 6 -inch reader Through an important point: design, interface, screen, price, etc.
Thus, you can define which model is the most suitable for your budget, and especially your needs.
- Price: Kindle advantage (2022), more affordable with advertisements in the interface
- Technical specifications: Kindle advantage (2022), more recent and modern
- Amazon Kindle technical sheet (2022)
- Kobo nia technical sheet
- Design: Amazon Kindle advantage, more compact and light
- E-ink screen: Kindle advantage (2022 model), as efficient as high-end readers !
- Operating system: Kobo Nia advantage, with the native support for EPUB format
- Reading: draw, with a 6 ”format ideal for novels
- Autonomy: equality, with many hours of ebook reading in perspective !
- Conclusion of the Kindle comparison (2022) versus Kobo Nia
Price: Kindle advantage (2022), more affordable with advertisements in the interface
Our two competitors are the cheapest on the market, with prices turning around a hundred euros.
However, Amazon takes control for this first round with more aggressive prices, even excluding promotion. The Kindle reader is displayed from € 99.99 For the version with advertisements in the interface.
If you do not support “special offers” on the watch and reception screen, then you will have to pay € 109.99 to benefit from a model that has devoid of it.
Be the same price as the Kobo Nia.
During sales periods and other events (such as Black Friday), Kindle often sees its price drop below 80 €.
For her part, the brand of brand Rakuten Kobo rarely goes below 90 €. Older while being more expensive, she loses this first round ..

It was run in advance: the Liseuse Amazon surpasses his competitor from Kobo. It must be said that the Canadian accuses her great age.
Technology from 2020 to 2022 has matured. La Kindle (2022) thus benefits from the best at the entry level: e-ink screen of 300 ppi, port USB-C, 16 GB of storage, etc.
Faced with that, NIA is satisfied with an electronic ink slab of only 227 ppi, a connector micro-USB And 8 GB of memory only…
This is unfortunately the best at Kobo in the first price. The Kindle is undoubtedly better than its competitor, at least on paper.
However, you will see in the Comparison points following that the Kobo Nia has great qualities to assert !
Design: Amazon Kindle advantage, more compact and light
There is no secret: to read a good digital book in comfort, your future reader must be light And compact.
The Kindle (model 2022) surpasses the Kobo Nia on these two points. It only weighs 158 g against 172 g, with a thickness of 8 mm against 9.2 mm.

The little American reader is also more ecological, using recycled plastics and magnesium. A good point for ecology, especially since this type of device is rarely renewed every year.
Despite its backward -looking design, the Kobo Nia still presents some assets. Already, it seems more solid than his partner thanks to thicker plastics.
© Johan Gautreau for Clubic
Then we appreciate the presence of microalveoles on the back. These small holes improve the handling electronic reader.
© Johan Gautreau for Clubic
Small assets that do not allow the Kobo Nia to win this round, but which may be able to tip the scales of your heart !
E-ink screen: Kindle advantage (2022 model), as efficient as high-end readers !
Difficult not to appreciate Amazon’s efforts on the side of the electronic ink slab. It’s very simple: the Kindle is as effective in this part as higher -end models such as the Kindle Paperwhite or the Kobo Libra 2.
It is the only digital reader at less than 100 € which displays a Definition of 300 ppi. There is not better as a definition at present on the market.
Add to that one White front lighting of excellent quality, without gray light spots as we find so much at the entry level.
© Johan Gautreau for Clubic
You have to suspect it, the Kobo Nia is pale here ..
Its e-ink carta screen of 212 ppi struggling to hold the comparison in the face of that of the Kindle. Looking closely, there is a slight vague effect due to the lack of pixels.
Despite this, there are possible hours of hours without eye fatigue. Lighting Comfortlight (without color temperature adjustment) provides the comfort required for night reading.
He displays some gray spots, but nothing bad. In absolute terms, the two readers are very pleasant to look at. The Kobo Nia is nevertheless hampered by a electronic ink screen older.
Advantage for the Kindle (2022), almost able to compete with its big sister, paperwhite !
Operating system: Kobo Nia advantage, with the native support for EPUB format
It is a repetition at each comparison, each selection, each test: Amazon shoots himself in the foot by dint of refusing the support of EPUB format.
© Johan Gautreau for Clubic
The Kindle (model 2022) is no exception to the rule. The American giant does everything to stay in his ecosystem and only buy your electronic books in his online store.
There is a good way to transfer EPUB files, But the maneuver remains heavy and not very suitable for large digital libraries.
To import your e-books in EPUB format on Kindle, you will need to send them via the Kindle smartphone application. Or via the mail service Send to Kindle.
Each file is then converted to Azw, The owner format of Amazon. Heavy as desired ..
You might as well go through the software Caliber For your conversions, especially if you are used to buying all your electronic books on third -party stores.
© Johan Gautreau for Clubic
Kobo gets much better by natively managing these famous ePub files. A simple copy and paste of your favorite works is enough to make them readable on the 6-inch reader.
We also appreciate the presence at Kobo to Reading statistics rather complete, as well as the possibility of reading articles from the web saved via Pocket.
© Johan Gautreau for Clubic
All this without forgetting that there is no reader with advertisements at the brand beating the Rakuten pavilion. It is therefore Kobo who wins this handle hands down !
Reading: draw, with a 6 ”format ideal for novels
If we omit the support of the EPUB format, our two rivals are as pleasant as the other for Read a good e-book.
Each of the two readers allows you to finely adjust the font size, THE margins and the inflict ones. You can also consult the integrated French dictionary at any time or highlight text.
© Johan Gautreau for Clubic
The readers dyslexics are not forgotten, specific fonts being dedicated to them on the Kindle and the Nia.
The very compact format of these machines is perfect for the Reading novels. We chain the works page after page, with a reading comfort equivalent to that of a pocket book.
© Johan Gautreau for Clubic
However, screens of 6 “are little indicated to view manga or some comics. Also forget PDF documents in original A4 format.
To read these kinds of works, orient yourself rather towards the Kindle Scribe or the Kobo Elipsa 2nd.
Autonomy: equality, with many hours of ebook reading in perspective !
We almost come at the end of this Comparison between the Kindle (2022) and the Kobo Nia.
If this “versus” tends in favor of the young Kindle (model 2022), the Kobo Nia continues to hold the road despite its advanced age.
The two readers find themselves equally for the latter round, each offering a beautiful autonomy several weeks.
© Johan Gautreau for Clubic
Of course, everything will depend on your uses. A high brightness or the permanent activation of Wi-Fi will quickly overlap battery of each reader.
So you can hold one to six weeks of use. During our tests, we were able to read about 1 hour per day for a month, this with each machine of this comparison.
Conclusion of the Kindle comparison (2022) versus Kobo Nia
Of Visu, it is the Kindle of 2022 which offers the best quality price report from the moment. Even more efficient than her partner, more modern too, she seems intended to win the hearts of readers with a small budget.
However, we can only advise you to think carefully before a possible purchase. As old as it may be, the Kobo Nia remains an excellent entry -level reader, Very pleasant to use on a daily basis.
Although it is technically exceeded on many points, it offers the freedom that all Amazon productions are missing. If as we have a beautiful library of e-books in EPUB format, then the NIA will probably suit you more than its sister.
Finally, should we buy La Kindle (2022) or the Kobo Nia ?
In summary, opt for theAmazon Kindle (model 2022) if :
- You want to enjoy a beautiful 300 pixel screen per inch,
- You are looking for a light and efficient reader,
- You do not see any drawback in staying partitioned in the Amazon ecosystem.
However, we recommend that you opt for the Kobo Nia if :
- You have EPUB e-books from third-party digital bookstores,
- You are not embarrassed by the aging specifications of this reader
- You want a machine with a shell that holds well in hand
Following this Kindle comparison (2022) vs kobo nia, You should now have all the keys in hand to choose your future reader.
The comments are nevertheless open if you have any questions !

Kobo and Kindle readers in reduction
Here are the readers who are currently on promotion, you may find some models Kobo or Kindle brands ::
The origins of Kobo and Kindle brands
Before seeing the readers proper, we will be interested in theHistory of each brand.
Because, it is sometimes interesting to understand the story behind each product to make the best choice and this is obviously strongly the case with readers as you can see.
History of Kindle readers

First of all, Kindle is a brand that was created by Amazon. The first Kindle reader was launched on the American market almost 15 years ago Now in 2007.
Since then, the versions of Kindle readers have followed and have been constantly improved. There is now a range of 4 readers whose price varies between € 99 and € 259.
I voluntarily excluded the Kindle Scribe which is especially, in my opinion, a working tool for taking notes.
These readers are therefore suitable for all budgets.
But, an important aspect of Kindle readers is their integration with the Amazon universe.
Indeed, the Kindle was created to build a new digital reading offer at the Amazon “Paper” bookstore.
Thus, Kindle readers are compatible only with the Amazon bookstore.
History of Kobo readers

The Kobo brand is more recent Since it has been active since 2009. It was created at Canada But has since been bought by the group Japanese Rakuten in January 2012.
Again, it is a very popular brand of reader and many models have been put on the market with improvements each year.
The brand was created as An alternative to Kindle with the aim of creating competition centered around comparable models in terms of characteristics.
But, for a few years; Kobo innovates by offering different technical features Kindles: waterproof reader, larger screen diagonal, compatibility with audio books, etc.
As we have just seen, the history of the two brands is linked.
Kobo now belongs to a large group of e-commerce (Rakuten, which holds many e-commerce sites like PriceMinister in France), just like Kindle which is the brand of Amazon.
Technical differences and screens between Kobo and Kindle readers
I will be clear at this level: For the profane the technical differences between the machines are tiny.
But, the devil hides in the details, as we say.
First of all, The two readers are configured on an online bookstore that it is not possible to change:
- Kindle is connected to the Amazon digital books bookstore
- Kobo is connected to the Kobo digital book bookstore (or Fnac, if you buy a model in these stores “Kobo by Fnac”)
In both cases, the files you buy and download are protected by a DRM.
This digital lock prevents the copy of your ebook to a reader that does not belong to you.
Kindle and Kobo ebooks not compatible with each other (EPUB and AZW)

Kobo Libra H2O: one of the latest models of readers Kobo
Kindle readers use the Azw ebook file format (with DRM Amazon) while Kobo readers use EPUB format (with DRM Adobe).
In practice, it is rarely embarrassing because even if you go from a Kobo reader to a Kindle reader, the two brands offer software that allows you to find her books and read them on smartphone, tablet, PC or Mac.
So it is always possible to reread a book that you bought on a platform or the other.
For more advanced users, it is always possible to free yourself from all these digital locks (DRM) by deleting them. The technical operation, described here, is perilous And does not work every time.
Natively, Kobo e -readers (and Kobo by Fnac) have an advantage: They read the EPUB format, Very widespread in independent bookstores but also piracy lovers. You can therefore load a Kobo reader with an EPUB file and it will be directly supported and read.
At Kindle, it’s more complicated because you have to send the EPUB by email to an address that corresponds to that of your reader. But it is possible and rather simple.
We can also go through a tool of Conversion of books as a caliber to transform the ePub into azw. However, the operation is at the brought of anyone knowing roughly manipulating a computer.
I advise you to read this file specifically made (with video), to show you how to read EPUB on Liseuse Kindle: Read epubs on Kindle.
After conversion an ePub file is transformed into a mobi or azw file and is perfectly read by a Kindle reader.
You will find all the details of the operation by reading this article which explains how to convert a Kobo file to Kindle and vice versa.

Liseuse Kindle Paperwhite: selection of books for “bonus” subscribers
Finally, if you have Amazon services such as “premium” or the Kindle subscription (which allows you to read without limit for less than € 10 per month), a Kindle reader is compulsory to take full advantage of these services (for bonus, You can borrow one ebook per month for free).
Regarding screens and technologies used, these two brands use the same equipment provided by the Asian company E INK. There is therefore no difference in display quality on the equipment. On the other hand, the software used (and the fonts provided) make that you can see visual differences on the display of the texts.
The different models of Kindle and Kobo readers

On the side of the Kobo readers, we have 4 models currently on sale:
- Kobo Clara 2nd : lit model, touching with 6 -inch HD screen
- Kobo Libra 2 : lit model, touch, waterproof with a 7 -inch larger screen (HD too)
- Kobo Nia : a cheap 6 -inch reader and sold for less than 100 €
- Kobo Sage : lit model, touching with a very large 8 -inch screen
- Kobo Elipsa 2nd : a very expensive but complete model which also allows use as an electronic notebook (sold with stylus and protective cover)
At Kobo the prices range from € 109 (Kobo NIA) to € 419 for the largest reader, the Kobo Elipsa. We quickly notice that The real differentiating factor comes from the size of the screen.

Now let’s move on to the models of readers Kindle Currently available:
- Kindle : touch model with lighting with 6 -inch screen with a very affordable price (less than 100 €)
- Kindle Paperwhite : touch model, lit, waterproof, 6 screen.8 inches
- Kindle Oasis : touch model, lit, 7 inch high resolution screen
- Kindle Scribe : a model of about 10 inches with stylus and dedicated to taking notes
The cheapest model of the two brands is therefore available at Amazon (Kindle) with better specifications (more precise screen) than the Kobo Nia available at the same price.
This makes The Kindle brand more accessible than Kobo by offering better quality / price ratio. It is ideal for trying to readers without spending a lot of money.
At Kindle, the largest diagonal is 7 inch, which means that the high -end is more expensive than at Kobo for a lower diagonal.
Quickly, we clearly notice that if we want the reader with The best screen size / price ratio, You have to turn to a reader Kobo And undoubtedly to the Kobo Libra 2 which is waterproof and has a larger screen of 7 inches and available at Fnac.
Kobo therefore seems to turn to the top of the range, while Kindle towards more accessible models.
From a software point of view, in addition to the differences we have seen about file formats, I find that Kindle software is slightly simpler than Kobo’s. But, there are more features at Kobo.
Kobo readers are doing a little more, but Kindle readers are designed to simplify reading as much as possible.
Again it is in line with the brand’s pricing positioning.
Here is Two comparative tables that present these different models of Kindle and Kobo readers from 2023:
Kobo or Kindle in 2023: the choice in books and the library
We can legitimately ask ourselves the question: Where is there the most books, at Kobo or at Kindle ?
First of all, publishers publish their ebooks indifferently in one and the other.
So you will really find The same digital books (and therefore the same choice) at Kindle or at Kobo.
But there is a exception : if you read a lot of self-published (without editor) and English books, then you will have More choices at Kindle.
But, really, it’s to quibble. In the vast majority of cases, we find the same thing in French in one and the other.
You should also note an important thing: if you are fans of the audio or customer books of the bookstore of Audios Kobo, the Kobo Libra 2 and Kobo Clara 2e readers will allow you to listen to your books on your readers thanks to their Bluetooth connection.
Kindle or Kobo: advantages and disadvantages
It is always difficult to decide between these two brands, so I will make it simple with a classification with advantages and disadvantages for each brand.

Kindle reader: list of advantages and disadvantages
Let’s start with the Kindle readers.
✔️ Advantages:
- R Quality / Price contribution
- G Large readers
- Ease of use
- I ntégration with premium and the Kindle subscription
❗ Disadvantages:
- No ePub format natively supported ! (but it is easy to read this format on their readers)
- No large diagonal of more than 7 inches
Kobo reader: list of advantages and disadvantages
Kobo readers are not perfect either (no reader is) and here are the advantages and disadvantages of this brand’s machines:
✔️ Advantages:
- Range of wide readers in terms of screen sizes
- Good support for the native epub format
❗ Disadvantages:
- No convincing model for less than € 159 (for the moment): the Kobo Nia being widely exceeded
- DRM management with sometimes complicated Adobe
Kobo or Kindle: what brand wins (conclusion) ?
I think a conclusion is essential: There is no brand that comes out of the winner of this comparison.

Nevertheless, I think that Kobo readers are perfectly indicated for accomplished readers looking for an effective reader to read their many epub files.
On the side of Kindle, the simplicity of use is still unbeatable even if it comes to the detriment of portability (management of EPUB files not as simple as on Kobo).
Likewise, if you are the type very large reader, You will find it difficult to do without Unlimited Kindle subscription And so, from a reader of the same brand.
If you have a premium subscription at Amazon, you can also access many books for free on your reader with the Prime Reading program.
Unless you have fortunes to spend obviously !
So if you are the type To manage your collection of digital books correctly and finely And to like to see it grow, you should undoubtedly go on a kobo reader just for the easier management of ePub format.

If, conversely, You want to read without taking the head, Even if you never read a book twice, so you can go on the side of Kindle.
In any case, this is what I recommend to people around me.
But, With all the information there is on this page, you should now have all the information to make the right choice.

- Kindle Paperwhite sold by Amazon.fr (new version 2021): a complete reader (touch, beautiful screen, lighting, waterproof) sold by Amazon with a large screen of 6.8 inch for a very correct price.
- Kindle sold by Amazon.fr: it’s just the cheapest of readers with lighting !
- Kobo Libra 2 Sold by Fnac.com: a beautiful and large touch screen, lighting, a waterproof reader, reading of audio books, that the people ask ?
- Inkpad 3 at Cultura.fr: the reader with the largest screen of the moment, 8 inches for unrivaled comfort !
- Vivlio Touch Lux 5 at Cultura.FR: A flavored reader accessible with a beautiful screen and a large storage capacity (16 GB).
This content was published in Liseuses and Ereader by Nicolas (Liseuse Actu, Ebook, etc.), and marked with Kindle, Kobo. Put it in favorite with its permalian.

Hello, just a little comment: I find it rather reducing to present the EPUB format as only associated with independent publishers and hacking. Personally, the absence of EPUB format management on a device is definitely prohibitive.
EPUB is an open, standard and interoperable format. This is the reference.

Hello, you are right. But I also wanted to present cases of uses of this format.

Hello, very interesting tests, let’s still specify that the prices of the Kindle can be increased by € 10 so as not to be invaded by advertisements, and there, a question, on the Kobo models there is the same process or the kobo Do it never receive advertisements.
Subsidiary question: is it easy to install the caliber software on Kobo or Kindle models ?
THANKS.

Thank you for your comment.
Kindle advertising is not invasive. In fact, these are only promotions on books and accessories when the reader is on standby. We no longer see her at all when using it and when you read a book (still happy). In addition, after three days we no longer even pay attention.
The caliber software works on the computer (PC, Mac or Linux) and the Kindle and Kobo readers work perfectly with receiving the ebooks that we send from the computer to the Liseuse connected in USB.

Good morning
Pubs on a bought reader, even little invasive ?! You should specify this in the comparison. I am personally allergic to advertising, and I am sure that I am not the only one

Hello, What reader would you advise for the choice of book in English and Spanish with an easy translation for a few words if necessary in French ?

I think it is the Kindle catalog that is the most provided in pounds in English. As for the translation, I don’t know ..

Thank you for this very complete article. Having both, I still find that the Kobo catalog is richer, the application for choosing the more practical books while at Kindle … let’s say that we will find many more consumer books. I rather take works in English at Kindle. So I prefer the ergonomics of the Kobo app. There are also better targeted selections, so more advice work.
The free book section appears at Kobo and I read quality works. More complicated to find this at Kindle … Frankly, I hope Kobo will face the Amazon giant. In any case, I have a prefer for Kobo!

hello thank you for your comments could you tell me for buying books how it goes ? where books are the most affordable? And to finish free books are more of interest to whom ?

Books have the same price everywhere (unique price policy in France).
There are more choices in free books and in book at a very low price on Kindle due to the independent authors (without publishing houses) who use Kindle to publish their book. If you read books in English, there are also more choice at Kindle.

Good morning
First of all, a huge thank you for this site, all the items, the comparisons and the videos. This is a huge job you do.
For my part I had ordered a Kobo Clara HD for Christmas. Indeed, following the reading of many articles I imagined being a little freer to find works in particular, with the EPUB format.
A very attractive promotion during the Black Friday at Amazon allowed me to buy in parallel the new Kindle at 54 €. So it was going to allow me to also enjoy the Amazon universe that I use a lot on other aspects. No jealous therefore and a completely objective approach. In addition I would not allow myself to compare the technical characteristics of the two devices because there Clara HD is clearly a notch above the new Kindle. After a few days of use, also with caliber software, I already have a first idea and a very clear preference for Kobo. I’m going to do very simple and give you the impression that gives me the fact of opening each of the two readers. First with Kobo I really feel like I am entering my personal library and being able to ask myself quietly to read my books. I have the opportunity to get out of my library from time to time to go to my favorite bookstore buy books, but it remains very discreet. With the Kindle, I obviously have the possibility of finding all my books in my library but it is a bit like having the impression of crossing a shop before being able to access it or having the store permanently next to. Not to mention the advertising that is not too invasive, everything is done to encourage us to buy works.
Finally in less than 2 days my Kobo reader was already filled with around twenty works in EPUB format found free of charge (or with donation to support) and very well put on, on passionate or specialists sites. On Kindle is another story, we can of course go through caliber to format EPUB format in a compatible format for Kindle but the layout is sometimes very relative where the first coverage are not displayed in the reception … It’s not great. Using readers plus in a research and work approach, in particular with philosophical, scientific, religions or personal development works, I think that open readers like Kobo or Vivlio lend themselves better (easier to find studies or works specialized in EPUB and not be satisfied with static PDF).
On the other hand I find the functions of sharing more practical notes on Kindle.
It is therefore a very oriented personal opinion for a certain practice of reading oriented work and research. I think that for people who read a lot of novels, Kindle is a choice as much where can be more obvious and adapted than Kobo, both the bookseller is immense.

Thank you for all your items.
I still hesitate between Kobo and Kindle. I tested 2 works that I only found at Kindle. Outside, the Kobo Sage meets all my expectations. Will it be easy to convert the “Kindle” books to format readable by Kobo knowing that I have read in another of your articles that the DRMs will evolve! Help ..

A major forgetfulness is the Onyx Boox reader, which for me is far above the Kobo or the Kindle, and is not linked to a Liseuser of Liseuser. Certainly the approach is less intuitive, but we can do what we want with.

There is a more complete guide on the site (with Vivlio, Bookeen, etc.): https: // www.readers.net/buy-guide/
For Onyx, I do not recommend buying in Europe for lack of local distributor and also because of this: https: // www.readers.Net/Troubl-Liseuse-Onyx/

Thank you for this article. I have both products (Kobo and Kindle) and I have been using them for years. I prefer Kobo for the quality of their catalog, the choices offered. As for the Kindle … The presentation is a real tote and for a seasoned reader, we will quickly get tired of the subscription (unless we only stay in the translated sentimental novels, small thrillers and self-edited books). Nevertheless the choice Kindle in English tests and books is interesting, the books are not expensive.
