The iPhone SE 2022 is a lot: compact, light, powerful, rather pleasant to use, etc. It is also not – or more, and it is more annoying – many other things: in tune with the times, really affordable, exciting. However, where it is written that an entry-level smartphone cannot have a certain panache ? That he should not, in his own way, push certain limits, try some new features ?

The third generation of iPhone SE, always positioned at the entry level, is obviously the result of a balance, which is due to a tenuous bundle of wires, one of which is thicker than the others, more essential than the others : the price.

The right of access to the Apple world is often high, but it can generally be justified by a set of highlights, unique competitive assets … This year, however, the task will be arduous. Because, Apple did not maintain or lowered the price of its entry -level smartphone, it increased it by forty euros !

The Cupertino giant justifies it in many ways. Starting with the arrival of 5G, which is good news, even if for the moment, 5G subscriptions seem far from panicking the crowds and that the promise revolution is still absent subscribers. To explain this price increase, Apple also highlights the integration of its best chip, the A15 Bionic. A good thing certainly, but the A13 already gave satisfaction ..

If this has not been invoked by the Cupertino giant, it would be tempted to say that the shortage of components undoubtedly has its role to play in this pricing increase, and it would be almost the one and only acceptable excuse.

Anyway, the 500 euros milestone has gone. From 489 to 529 euros for the 64 GB model, there is more than an increase, there is a symbol. What was – and remains, de facto – an entry -level smartphone can hardly justify this positioning at such a price.

With this new price, the iPhone SE 2022 will certainly have more difficulty in maintaining the balance that still made it attractive. At this price, can it even seduce ? This is the real question, and our answers.

Old weak points

Since the iPhone 12 Mini stole the most compact iPhone title, it can obviously be less bet on this advantage. Understand that if the first criterion sought is compactness, this is not what will be remembered. However, its aluminum and glass case – the same as that of iPhone 13 – remains perfectly finished, small and very pleasant to hold in hand.

The iPhone nevertheless cultivates an anachronism that is increasingly difficult to understand. Since the heirs of design introduced with the iPhone X reign over the range of Apple smartphones, its only 4.7 -inch screen accuses its age with its HD definition, but not full HD, 1334 per 750 pixels. It’s small, both for the eyes and for the fingers, when you see the great comfortable slabs flourish elsewhere.

In addition, LCD technology is placed apart, in a world dominated by OLED tiles, even in (real) entry -level. You have to look for a long time to find competitors followed by the LCD.

If this technology cannot compete with the OLED, Apple mastery despite everything enough to get the most out of it. The brightness, measured at 619 cd/m2, is very sufficient to consult the screen in full sun. The contrast rate, without reaching the “infinite” threshold of the OLED slabs, is established at an honest 1,509: 1, slightly withdrawn from that which we had measured on the 2020 model (1 671: 1).
On the other hand, the Delta E2000, which measures the difference between the true value of a color and that displayed by the slab, is excellent and much better than on the last iPhone SE, since we have noted a Delta E of only 1, 62.

True tone and P3 technologies ensure good comfort of use regardless of ambient lighting and a wide range of color.

Without shining as much as an OLED slab, the LCD screen of the iPhone is honorable. And then, he is not the only one to keep a slab of this type. This is also the case of the iPhone 11, released in 2019 and still marketed by Apple.

On the other hand, the 6.1 -inch iPhone does not suffer from another handicap: design – that of the iPhone 8, introduced in 2017. Because the iPhone is clinging to a Touch ID button on the front – that some love and would not change for anything in the world, it is heard. However, this provision, coupled with the technology used, does not allow the screen to occupy more than 65.7 % of the front facade. At a time when the screens of other iPhone (except the iPhone 11) and those of most of the Android competitors oscillate at least 85 %, it’s just.

An asset thrown into the melee

Looking at the present and the future

What is this configuration involves ? A lot, but we will focus on three of them. Let’s start with the most important: power. And, at first, let us turn to the future. By putting his A15 Bionic in his SE, Apple assures him not to lack power, today, obviously, but also tomorrow, and for the years to come.

Knowing that the Cupertino giant is a unique example – and alas not enough copied – software follow -up, this is the guarantee that your iPhone SE 2022 will be updated in the next six years (or more), and will benefit from ‘So many generations of iOS, even if some of their new features will be prohibited from. That said, apart from these slight differences, iOS offers a unified and constant global experience, which is exceptional enough to be underlined.

Now let’s continue with the present. Yes, the iPhone SE 2022 is extremely efficient. He is compared to the iPhone 13 in many bench synthetic, and you will have to get up early – do not go to bed ? – to take it in default for lack of power. The interface is perfectly fluidity, exemplary reactivity. Apple thus guarantees “the iPhone experience” as we know it since its beginnings.

Let’s have fun in the game comparisons of test results. With the iPhone SE 2020, it’s obvious, but also with the iPhone 12 Mini, which steals the most compact iPhone title, with the iPhone 11, also, which is the cheapest after him. And also with some of the Android smartphones in the same price range that we have tested in recent twelve months. We thus retained the MI 11i 5G, of Xiaomi (sold 699 euros when it was launched), the ZenFone 8, of Asus (699 euros also originally), and, finally, the Pixel 6, from Google (649 euros at the beginning). The first two are led by the Snapdragon 888, of Qualcomm (with an Adreno 660 for the GPU part), while the Google smartphone is based on a homemade chip, the Google Tensor, for the CPU part, and its graphic part is that Designed by Arm, Mali GP MP20.

The results obtained with Geekbench 5 are unequivocal. The iPhone are in a class alone, and the iPhone SE 2022, any entry/medium -level it is, largely dominates its elders. This is the strength of the A15 Bionic.

When we compare the last two generations of iPhone SE, we see that the 2022 model is almost 35 % more efficient in single core, simply twice as efficient in multi -core and 78.3 % faster for the game Compute, which requests the entire chip. In two years, Apple therefore offers a real leap forward for those who would like more power and who would like to update their iPhone SE. And, of course, it displays very attractive performance for newcomers. But those presented by the iPhone SE 2020 were already largely sufficient on many points and for most uses ..

With Android competitors equipped with the Snapdragon 888 (since replaced at the top of the Qualcomm SOC by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1), the iPhone has a good superiority, at least 53 % in Single Core, 30 % in Multi Core, and higher 2.4 performance in compute.

More than power ..

But, in this case, the question is not so much raw performance. These chips have been bringing enough power for all everyday uses for a long time: games, surfing on the web, including musical, video or other applications.

These figures are therefore a short and long term guarantee, but they do not reveal everything that the A15 Bionic brings. Because, they take little into account the neural network of the chip, which will allow to quickly execute applications or calculations linked to the machine learning. No more than taken into account the improvement of image processing processors.

Since it has been revealed, the A15 Bionic promises progress in the field of voice recognition, of text – thank you for Live text ! – photographic treatment, etc. Promises held in iPhone 13, and also in the iPhone SE, with the limits linked to its hardware partition, obviously.

A photo experience … entry -level

Let’s be frank, the iPhone SE 2022 is not the best for the photo. Not among the current iPhone, and not among its competitors at the same price. How otherwise with a single rear camera module – with a 12 Mpix sensor and a six -element lens which opens to f/1.8 ?

Power, intelligence, and autonomy ?

Sliding the A15 Bionic in the iPhone SE 2022 is therefore offering power, ensuring better photo performance, but also, engraving in 5 nm requires, promise improvements in terms of autonomy. Is this the case in fact ?

Despite the arrival of 5G, which is managed in the same way as on other iPhone, namely that it is only used if it is the best choice, in order to spare the battery, the iPhone is won autonomy.

However, a quick look at the results compared above shows that the iPhone SE, despite its A15 Bionic, does not benefit from the same levels of autonomy as the last iPhone. Without even talking about the iPhone 13 which are the most enduring ever produced, the SE 2022 is far behind the iPhone 12 Mini, which was the ugly duckling of its generation … It is also less good than the iPhone 11. The chip therefore allows progress, but the factor of shape, and the size of the battery, limit improvements in the matter.

As the threshold of 15 hours in versatile independence is generally synonymous with the possibility of spending a full day far from an electrical outlet, it seems obvious that this will not be the case with the iPhone SE.

According to our experience, it will also be necessary to either recharge it quickly to grant it a few more battery, or spare it to be sure to hold all day, until the start of the evening.

Apple managed to make him make progress, but did not get a miracle. If we compare it to its Android competitors, it does not have too much to be ashamed, it is in the high or low slice, depending on whether you look at versatile or video autonomy. Too bad the entry -level of iPhones is not more impactful ..

As we have already said, we suspect the factor of form, the aging case, to be the cause of many of these faults, and these small disappointments. How to explain otherwise for example the lack of compatibility with the ultra wideband for the precise location of objects, in particular ?

However, we cannot end up on a negative note, because Apple heard one of the complaints of the public (and testers). Admittedly, the first model of iPhone SE 2022 is always equipped with 64 GB, which is very little for those who like to photograph and download applications, but it is now possible to have a 256 GB model… It will however cost you the flirtatious Sum of 699 euros !

The fact that the screen has only 60 Hz refreshment rate is a technical drawback that I must also mention. But the fluid animations of iOS 16 make it quickly forget.

If you are used to the design of the iPhone SE 2022 or the iPhone 8 and the use of the home button, you will not need to adapt. However, there are many screens today which are technically better than that of the iPhone SE 2022. If you want to try them, I recommend that you go to a store to take them in hand!

Interface/OS

One of the reasons why the iPhone SE 2022 is still relevant in 2023 is the very good software maintenance of Apple . In the 3D Mark Wildlife test which simulates intensive use for 20 minutes, the performance remained very stable, without the smartphone heating in an unpleasant way. Despite everything, the iPhone SE 2022 is really not a good gaming smartphone, because the screen is too small and too little efficient.

For my grip, I had created a gallery with several examples of photos taken with the smartphone that I recommend again to see in this test. The image quality of the iPhone SE 2022 is better than what I thought at the start. Indeed, thanks to the Smart HDR 4 and Deep Fusion, Apple manages to draw a lot of dynamics and sharpness from its old sensor. The iPhone SE 2022 is thus a very good photo smartphone.

Apple really likes recycling, and we are not talking about the aluminum of its products or its ecological commitments. But rather of his latest iPhone SE and his look from another time. It’s been a few weeks to use it on a daily basis, and here is our test of the iPhone SE 2022.

To fully understand this umpteenth Apple smartphone, you have to go back to the genesis of the iPhone Se. “SE” for Apple, it means Special Edition. A special edition for special products. Really special ? At first, yes.

The manufacturer launched the first iPhone SE in 2016 alongside the iPhone 6S. The principle was to recade the components of the latest model to date in an old generation chassis. With the promise, at the time, to offer a compact smartphone at a lower cost. And frankly, he left us a good memory.

Four years later, in 2020, Apple would repeat the operation with a second generation iPhone SE. This time, we had the right to an A13 chip on an iPhone 8 chassis. So a little evolution, for a still pretty low price.

So it’s still two years after the brand returns With the third generation of its iPhone SE, in 2022. If we could hope that this new model would draw on the side of the iPhone XR for its chassis, unfortunately, it does not evolve … not !

Design and screen of the iPhone SE 2022

The iPhone SE 2022 has the right to a 4.7 ″ LCD screen with 60 Hz cooling rate. A slab that remains rather correct today, with just colors and sufficient light, without being exceptional. It should be noted, however, that in the latest generation of iPhone 13, the American brand has put an end to LCD screens. Now all are equipped with OLED technology.

Under this screen, a Home physical button contains the Touch ID fingerprint sensor which is sometimes more practical and faster than Face Id. This is particularly the case when we wear a mask or sunglasses for example. Despite everything, now that iOS 15.4 allows ID to work with the mask, it is found less advantages.

Otherwise, the device is quite fine, light and resistant with its new reinforced glass and its IP67 certification. In our test, the iPhone SE 2022 has been pleasant to handle with its rounded slices which provide an excellent handling and a glass back which allows it to afford the wireless recharge.

Unfortunately, Apple did not see fit to join its magsafe magnetic charging system in this new iPhone SE 2022. It would have been a little more novelty and an obvious financial windfall for Apple – which could have been selling some more accessories. But it will be necessary to do without.

Photo & Video

It is therefore on this glass back that we find the only photo sensor that this model offers.

We are not going to expand on it: During our test, we did not notice any revolution with this 2022 cuvée of the iPhone Se. We find again and again this same small 12 Mp sensor, which turns out to be rather correct and which produces satisfactory pictures on a daily basis.

This iPhone can also film in 4K with an extremely convincing quality for a phone. This is a weight argument that we find in all Apple smartphones and this “SE” version does not hesitate.

On the other hand, with a single sensor, the iPhone SE 2022 is clearly not versatile in terms of photo. No ultra-large-angle, no telephoto lens. You have to be satisfied with a single angle because the digital zoom clearly does not do miracles.

The other reproach that can be made to this iPhone SE 2022 in our test and on its photo part, this is the absence of night mode. It is all the more unfortunate that this absence is not linked to the photo sensor itself, but only to the software part.

Apple therefore did not see fit to integrate this mode into its latest iPhone SE when it is present on iPhone from the iPhone 11, which has an A13 Bionic chip. This iPhone SE 2022 is however entitled to a more recent and more powerful chip, the A15 Bionic which also runs the latest iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. He is there, the big one (and alone ?) Performances & Autonomy

With the A15 Bionic chip, this iPhone instantly rises among the most powerful smartphones on the market. Offered when it was released at € 529, it delivers performance that exceeds those of smartphones sold more than € 1,200 when it was launched, such as the Samsung Galaxy S22 S22 for example.

Nevertheless, the A15 chip may be particularly efficient, in the case of this iPhone SE 2022, this power debauchery will probably not be used to run large mobile games or gourmet applications. Here, we must rather see the presence of this chip as a guarantee of longevity in terms of updates. This iPhone is should benefit from major iOS updates for another 5 years at least, and it is clear that this aspect allows the iPhone SE of 2022 to pull out of the game.

The other argument of this chip is that it takes 5g. This allows the iPhone to be compatible with the latest generation of ultra-fast networks. If you don’t have a 5G package yet, it does not matter: the iPhone SE 2022 obviously also works on the 4G network. In a few years, it will nevertheless be practical to be able to subscribe to a 5G package.

Last major point: autonomy. In its conference, Apple stressed the fact that the Bionic A15 chip contained in this iPhone would allow it to be more independent. And in our iPhone SE 2022 test, we have not noted spectacular front leap. You could expect excellent autonomy while the last iPhone 13 (and in particular the 13 pro) are particularly enduring. On the iPhone SE 2022, the gain is much more contained.
