After having used all the iPhone released over the past 16 years and noted any progress since 2019 and the iPhone 11, I noticed for the first time for a long time several regressions, which I hope to see corrected with the next generation. A few days before the iPhone 15 announcement conference on September 12, 2023, here is my list of complaints for the future Apple star smartphone.

A autonomy that must return to the top level

For a long time, Apple’s iPhone was criticized for their bad autonomies. A deserved image, since Apple has long sacrificed the size of the batteries in favor of design, which forced the owners of iPhone to recharge their devices more often.

Around 2019, with the iPhone 11, Apple suddenly became the best. The autonomy of the iPhone began to get ahead of competition, thanks to the use of larger capacity batteries and an incredible software optimization. Even more impressive: the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 managed to do even better. I have not recharged my iPhone 13 Pro Max for 2 days and finish this period of 48 hours around the remaining 10 % battery.

With the iPhone 14, Apple has regressed. In the case of my iPhone 14 Pro Max, if the first days were encouraging, autonomy quickly dropped. My iPhone, whose battery health is estimated at 90 % according to Apple settings (this is an astonishing fall in such a short time), is hardly the day. I admit it a lot (more than 5 hours of screen on a day with hundreds of notifications), but I do not use it more than my previous iPhone. This observation is also shared by other owners of iPhone 14 Pro, who are also surprised by this autonomy below the previous years. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus seem more robust.

How to explain this drop in battery ? Is this the fault of the A16 Bionic chip, exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro ? Always on screen ? Of the Promotion screen (1-120 Hz) ? An update that would have broken everything ? By forcing the 60-Hz constant display, without “Always-on-Display”, I can almost double the autonomy of my iPhone (I did it on vacation and it changes my life). Another theory: the A16 Bionic chip does not like heat too much, which makes it overheat in summer, which lowers the overall performance of the device … In short, with the iPhone 15 pro, I am waiting for Apple a better optimization (perhaps thanks to the new chip ?) to hold two days again on a single load. And, no longer have to stroll with an external battery during my trips.

Better temperature management

Like many other smartphones, iPhone 14 adapt to temperature to limit the risk of overheating. As soon as it is too hot (or their processor heats up too much), the brightness falls suddenly, the performance is reduced and the iPhone becomes hot. This year, this phenomenon particularly bothered me with my iPhone 14 Pro Max, often burning and very not very bright when I needed it (you can easily identify the location of the chip, a piece of the back heats up very hard of time in time). Going from an ultra-brilliant screen to a very dark screen is frustrating, especially by the pool or on a bicycle, with the iPhone as GPS.

With the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple should introduce new materials. I hope they will resist the temperature better and that the new A17 chip, engraved in 3 nm, will better regulate the rise of degrees. It is also a real recharge problem, since the iPhone quickly becomes boiling.

It’s time to have an iPhone less messy and lighter

A better development

Finally, and this is a problem that many people told me, the autofocus of the iPhone 14 Pro is not very good when you photograph something close (I had noticed it in my test in September 2022). Between the transition from normal mode to macro mode and the difficulties of the main sensor of the device, Apple has accustomed us to better. Hopefully a material improvement with the iPhone 15 pro, so that the portraits are not blurred during the first try.

So much for my list of requests for the iPhone 15. The rest is difficult to improvise, given the incredible quality of Apple iPhone 14. Photo quality, performance, screen light, iOS ecosystem, Dynamic Island … Everything is great on brand’s devices, which are not in mind for nothing for nothing.
