The iPhone 13 Pro Max is available in stores Since Friday, September 24, 2021. This year, all the models in the range arrived on the market the same day. Design: Apple refines its little gem

Visually, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is very (very) close to its predecessor. Placed next to each other, we could easily confuse the two terminals or assume that they are part of the same generation. The neophyte will not receive any notable difference between the two devices (we have also tested).

The smartphone is built aroundA surgical steel frame Of the nicest effect. The edges are flat and angular, like those of the iPhone 4/ 4S. This material transforms the iPhone into a real luxury jewelry. We really don’t want to enclose it in a protective shell (but we do it anyway out of caution). Unfortunately, stainless steel strongly marks fingerprints. We had the same problem on the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

On the rear side, we find A textured matt glass back. Only the Apple logo, in the center of the rear side, and the rounded square photo block are covered with a reflective glass. The brand has the photo sensors and the LED flash in an even more prominent photo block than last year. The objectives are much more imposing than those of the 12 pro max (we will come back to this in the photography part of this test). Apple again protects the camera with A sapphire crystal layer. The rendering of the block breathes luxury, as always with Apple.

The SIM card drawer is placed just below. On the right edge, Apple place the locking button. Prolonged support makes it possible to invoke Siri, the brand’s voice assistant.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max is Available in 4 colors : Silver, gold, graphite and alpine blue. True to its habits, Apple has launched a new color this year. To develop the alpine blue shade, the manufacturer claims to have placed “Several layers of ceramic” on the surface. Despite Apple’s marketing arguments, we rather opted for the traditional and timeless graphite color.

This new iPhone is thicker and predecessor. The iPhone 13 Pro Max indeed weighs 238 grams, against 228 grams for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. It displays a thickness of 7.65 millimeters, against 7.4 mm for iPhone 12. During the grip, weight and mass gain goes completely unnoticed. We find exactly the same sensations as with the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Handling the smartphone is intuitive, easy and does not require contorting your fingers in improbable positions, even with one hand. Flat slices and navigation gestures help manipulate the phone in one hand despite its size. Buyers with small hands may however have trouble using the iPhone 13 Pro Max without involving their 10 fingers.

Obviously, the iPhone 13 Pro Max, like the other editions of the range, is IP68 certified. It can be immersed in clear water up to 6 meters deep for 30 minutes maximum.

A 120 Hz screen, finally !

The iPhone 13 Pro Max has a major advantage compared to its predecessor: The Promotion screen. To preserve the battery of iPhone 13 Pro, Apple put on a screen with an adaptive refresh frequency. The power of the iPhone 13 Pro Max was confirmed in our benchmarks. On Antutu, the flagship obtains an impressive score of 804,496 points. It is much better than most Android market smartphones. We have tested several augmented reality games on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, like the very successful Batmanar. The rendering is very immersive. Thanks to the software optimization of iOS 15, The iPhone 13 Pro Max does not overheat (or almost not). During our gaming sessions or during our benchmarks, we have not noticed an increase in the temperature of the phone, at least nothing perceptible. Last year, the iPhone 12 Pro Max heated significantly during our benchmarks. For his part, his successor heats slightly when recording 4K videos or long photo sessions.

Two days of autonomy with a recharge

Autonomy is The second major asset of the iPhone 13 Pro Max Compared to his predecessor. During our first day of testing, we turned on the smartphone at 6:18 am. After a full night of load, the battery then displayed 100%. After two hours of reading videos, writing, consultation with social networks and a music fitness session in the ears, the iPhone always displayed 92%. The level of the battery fell under 85% in the early afternoon (around 2 p.m.). Around 5 p.m., the indicator still displayed 60% autonomy. We ended the day 39% despite the intensive use we have made of the smartphone. In more moderate use, we easily reaches the two days of autonomy. Recharge not really fast

Design

This iPhone 13 Pro Max is really beautiful. We clearly have the impression of manipulating a jewel of aesthetics in your hands (well it was already the case with the iPhone 12 Pro Max which still looks like almost line for line). To summarize, a premium steel outline with flat and rather angular edges. Then, a textured matt glass back which makes it possible to (a little) avoid fingerprints, on which we find a fairly substantial photo block. Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max Design

This is the design of the iPhone 12 Pro Max with its large 6.7 -inch screen, its straight stainless steel contours matching the colors available. False tunes of iPad Pro, iPad Air and now iPad Mini to homogenize the high end.

The volume and silence buttons as well as the hatch for the SIM card are on the left. Right, we have the ignition button that also melts in the color of the device. A design similar to the rest of the iPhone 13 and the same small size change: the notch is now 20 % smaller. This is due to a repositioning of its sensors. It is always used for facial recognition Face ID and taking selfie photos. But now its four sensors are aligned in the center, under the loudspeaker. Using our probe, we measured a brightness at 890 cd/m² with true tone activated and simulating a strong sun. The iPhone is still supporting the widest possible color spectrum possible and we have recorded a color temperature at 6550 K, the expression of an excellent balance between blue and red tones (6500 k being the referral figure).

Despite the decrease in the notch, you still have to keep bands a little wide by watching videos on Netflix. But overall, the display is better managed and the notch no longer “eats” certain texts, games or posts on social networks. Even if there are still some left to optimize.
