Electric vehicles, Renault Zoe: battery rental is over!

Renault Zoe: the battery rental is over

In parallel, Renault also offers battery rental with its ZOE. This offer is explained by the fact that the battery is the most expensive element of the car. And although the cost has dropped in recent years, the capacity has increased. Renault therefore agreed to keep this rental for the new version launched at the end of 2019. Its main asset is its purchase price, from 23.900 euros on R110 (Life model), or 26.€ 500 on the R135 (Zen finish). At this price, it is therefore necessary to add the rental of the battery which differs according to the duration of contract and the desired mileage. For example, it starts at € 44/month (on promotion) in the case of a period of 3 years and 7.500 km annual.

Renault Zoe: the battery rental is over !

The rental of the battery on the Renault Zoe is definitely finished ! Discreetly withdrawn from the manufacturer’s site for many weeks, the offer has now disappeared from the pricing grids. A real turning point in the history of the city car.

An electric car sold without battery

Controversial within the community, the formula largely contributed to democratizing the model when it arrived on the market in 2013 in 2013. Simple, the principle was to sell the car without its battery. A way for Renault to offer its zoe at a price close to that of a thermal model of equivalent size. At the time, it was also a question of reassuring the customer on the life of the battery, the rental contract including a change of pack in the event of a glitch.

In terms of costs, the acquisition of a “out -of -battery” ZOE allowed a saving of around € 8,000 compared to a “integral” purchase. Reverse of the medal: the user had to free himself from a rental to pay each month. Inspired by the principle of mobile telephony, Renault offered different packages. The latter depended on the annual mileage traveled and the duration of engagement. Small or large rollers, everyone found their account. The contract was then taken out with the Diac, a subsidiary of Renault. The monthly payments were not given, however and could exceed 100 euros in “unlimited” formula.

The privileged integral LLD

Formerly essential to ensure the sales of the city car, the rental of the battery has proven to be less and less relevant over the years.

In addition to the democratization of electricity and the model’s performance rise, it is above all the evolution of the purchasing method that precipitated the end of the formula. Previously focused on companies, long -term rental (LLD) has gradually democratized among individuals. Today, 70 % of ZOE in France are sold with this formula.

The Kangoo Ze also abandons the rental battery

Within the Renault catalog, the ZOE is not the only electric vehicle to abandon the battery rental. The Kangoo ZE electric utility also removes the formula to focus on LLD and “full purchase” offers.

In the end, Twizy is today the only model in the Renault electric range to keep the formula. Maybe more for a long time ..

New Renault Zoe: Should you buy or rent the battery ?

The Renault city car offers two options for purchase, that of classic full purchase, or that of renting the battery. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each ? Automobile-proper explains which one to choose according to your need, and if premium or bonus are possible.

Update 14.06.2020: We have changed the prices with integration of bonuses and conversion bonus, as well as the new offer at € 79/month.

Upon launch at the end of 2019, the Renault Zoe dominated the electric automotive market in France and there are always more many of you are interested in this car. In January 2020, thanks to the craze towards this engine, she even reached the top 3 sales. In addition to your questions about electricity, the ZOE has a specificity: it offers two separate purchasing offers.

What differences ?

Like any classic car, the purchase offer is offered, but is called here “Full purchase”. Thus the R110 model, with 110 horsepower engine, is billed out of bonus of 7.000 € from 32.000 euros in Life finish, all inclusive with the battery. The most powerful R135 version of 135 horsepower begins at 34.600 euros with a level of Zen equipment.

R110 Zen
18.900 € 27.000 €
Intense R110 20.900 € 29.000 €
R135 Zen

Intense R135
21.500 € 29.600 €
R135 Edition One
24.500 € 32.600 €

The above prices are indicated with bonus of 7.000 € included and excluding conversion bonus of 5.000 €. Also note, the battery rental does not include the cost of the recharge, which you will have to take on with home or private charges.

Budget and short duration offer: battery rental

If your number 1 criterion is that of the price, it is undoubtedly for the rental of the battery that you must opt. The access price is indeed 8.100 € cheaper than full purchase. Thus, the price of the battery will be diluted throughout the monthly payments, and less heavy for the wallet. This offer is also suitable if you plan to keep the vehicle over a short term. However, even if you are due to the contract, it will be possible to renegotiate it. Note that if you have just taken the plunge of electricity, the rental includes the replacement of battery in the event of loss of capacity at less than 75% (compared to 66% in full purchase).

But be careful to estimate your needs well, because it will influence the price of your rental. Excluding discounts, the rental price Z.E. Flex starts at 74 €/month for an annual mileage of 7.500 km, or € 888/year. The monthly payments then increase by € 10/month per range of 2.500 km, or 124 €/month maximum for 20.000 km. For unlimited mileage, rental Z.E. Relax (€ 124/month) is also available, but only for individuals.

With our simulation below, we notice that the advantage of renting the battery disappears after a certain duration. It is 5.5 years for a 20 contract.000 km/year, and 9 years for 7.500 km/year.

Good to know : Since the launch, Renault has posted a promotion on certain offers “Z.E. Flex »from € 44/month (37 month and 7 contract.500 km/year). It is also available for 10.000 km (€ 54/month) and 12.500 km (€ 64/month). Be careful to calculate your mileage, because the additional km is billed 10 cents !

The tranquility and long -term offer: full buying or LLD purchase

If your finances allow it and you drive a lot, this option is the most recommended. Once the amount has been set, you no longer need to worry about a battery -related rent that is integrated at the price. And unlike the rental option, your annual mileage has no impact on the final purchase price. Only nuance with the rental solution: if the battery warranty remains fixed at 8 years or 160.000 km, its replacement will only take place from the moment its capacity drops to less than 66% (against 75% in the case of rental).

But beyond the full purchase, the LLD is also an interesting solution. Renault communicates on an offer starting at € 169/month for a 37 -month contract, with first rent of 8.€ 044 (reduced to 1.000 € once the bonus of 7.000 € deduced). The monthly payments integrate the battery but with, as for the purchase option with battery rental, a limited mileage. For more information, see our article dedicated to the Renault ZOE 169/month offer. The highest offer is € 309/month on the R135 Edition One under these conditions.

*Excluding option, launch promotional offer for a rental of 37 months (contribution of 8.000 € and 36 monthly payments) and 7.500 km/year, or 22.500 km on the duration of the contract. This offer increases with different mileage/duration (see full table below).

LLD: do your calculations well

The LLD solution obviously concerns durations and higher mileage. Here is the details of the monthly payments on the offers offered by Renault for a long -term rental, with an contribution of 8.000 €, and excluding bonus. These monthly payments will obviously be superior in the event of a lower contribution.

61 months/37.550 km 236 €* 316 € € 343 € 324 352 € 392 €

*Reminder: this concerns a promotional offer valid in June 2020

All these offers are not egalitarian depending on the finish and motorization chosen. Our calculations show (see graphic below) that the R110 Life is an exception with a cheaper LLD. Example, it will return to 69% of the purchase price in LLD 49 months, against 73% for the others. There is also a small advantage to opt for the LLD 37 months, currently in promotion.

Again, these offers have, as for battery rental, maximum mileage. For the first offer at € 179/month, it is 22.500 km. Renault specifies that “Cases of state -redemption and additional KMS” are to be provided when the vehicle is submitted at the end of the contract. In practice, each kilometer made beyond the package will cost you 10 cents. Information that is important since realizing, if only a route of a load (about 350 km) in addition will add 35 euros !

Finally, from June 1 to 30, 2020, a promotional offer concerns the R110 model. On the LIFE finish, the LLD price on the Renault ZOE is set at € 79/month. This price is possible thanks to the bonus of 7.000 €, but subject to recovery with the conversion bonus of 5.000 €.
