Z8 Pro electric scooter test: as many options as defects

Do not take the Chinese scooter for an easy -to -transport machine. Its 20 kg make it the enemy of stairs and public transport. In addition, it is impossible to roll the Z8 pro when folded. The only solution is to grab it by the gallows and work our muscles. The Z8 pro is not designed in the multimodal mind, it is a fact, and it is assumed.

Quite disappointed with the product and test

On April 12, 2022 it served me to go/come to work. As well as for professional trips. I must say that I am very disappointed for the price (€ 900 anyway). She is not very robust. The finishes are quite afraid (hot glue quickly made) the quality of mediocre materials. The charge on Tord just by pressing with its engine fingers not so powerful as that. I imagine the other models that have smaller engines. Summ crutch that breaks after a week (scooter just posed) autonomy Ca (about 25km) far from the 50 anyway ! Drum braking works well, too well even blocks the rear wheel quite easily. and zero adhesion. surely due to the full tire. The latency time between the moment when it is required of acceleration and the moment when it gives it is quite restrictive for certain situations. Honestly I often check the assemblies because I do not trust the robustness of this scooter which very often trusts the judgment of the digital, I am very disappointed with this test. The universe of the scooter is divided into 3 categories: sports models for performance, toys to have fun and finally those who serve as “Daily”, in other words, daily transport vehicle replacing the bicycle, the car, public transport and sometimes even two-wheelers. The Zero 8 Pro (or Z8 Pro) clearly targets this last category and promises to support you daily in your trips in unrivaled comfort.

Zero attacked the market with the 10x, a scooter of the time without law, during which tickling the 50 km/h with 2 x 1200 W on a scooter was not yet considered a crime. Then other models were created and among them, the Z8 Pro: the promise of high -end equipment for a price of 890 euros. But the Z8 pro offers more: large battery, front and rear suspensions, card anti -starting system and even indicators ! She could almost appear in a Batman. Is it enough to make it the perfect urban mobility machine ?

Z8 Pro Design

The design of the z8 pro sends wood: big deck, Large wheels, huge hanger, two brake handles, a footrest above the rear wheel, the Z8 pro imposes and reminds of scooters bodybuilded. From afar, it attracts the eye and arouses lust. Up close, this is another story.

The finish is sometimes successful, like this completely smooth deck underside (and therefore better protected against rain) or the gallows, thick and robust whose folding system is not only soft and fluid, but also sure. On the other hand, this same folding system reveals an abundance of fat that we will tend to put on the fingers. The cables are finished with a lighter (the rubber is burned in places) and the acceleration control, to which we will come back, made low -end plastic as possible.

The deck is wide, which offers excellent comfort. Comfort reinforced by this footrest located above the rear wheel and which allows you to have a very balanced driving position. The hanger (or handlebars) is also wide, and the brake handles fall well under the fingers.

Small buttons hidden in these handles allow the indicators to be activated. Yes, you read correctly ! This is the only model at this price to offer it. And even if at the beginning, I forgot to activate them, they quickly became essential.

DSC03184

The suspensions, for their part, are rather successful aesthetically speaking. We will talk about their effectiveness in the conduct part.

DSC03141

IMG_20210603_144028

Folded, the scooter is paradoxically more compact than an ninebot G30 max and will fit more easily into the trunk of a car or between your legs in public transport.

Lighting level, there is a strip of LEDs which acts as a diurnal fire, two spots in the deck, a rear light and lighting under the deck.

DSC03176

DSC03150

The steering column adjusts on the fly like a bicycle saddle.

Overall, the construction is solid, but the finish is very average. However, it is the elements that we constantly use that have been partly neglected. Yes, this scooter has a successful look, especially in this mate green color, is robust in its global construction, but sees certain neglected fundamental elements, such as the trigger.

Z8 pro conduct

With its wide deck, the Z8 Pro allows you to position yourself well. The weight of the battery offers a low center of gravity. The first laps make it possible to appreciate the effectiveness of the suspensions which erase the roughness of the road. The width of the handlebars offer good control. We have fun leaning in turns.

The rear footrest, the wide hanger and the deck allowing to quietly place your feet offer a large polygon of lust and provide an excellent balance.

The suspensions are adjustable, but you will probably never regulate them. With the factory configuration, and my quintal on it, it was a treat. So much so that we totally forget that the wheels are only 8.5 inches tubeless for the front and that the rear tire (8 inch) is full. Besides, their effectiveness is such that you can even jump sidewalks with a little momentum without fear for your tires or the structure of the scooter.

In this regard, little advice: if you opt for a full tire scooter, remember to take it with suspensions, or add it if possible. Your back and your joints will thank you, especially if you were born before the 90s. The back of the medal for this full tire is its replacement, rather complex.

Especially since the wheel integrates the engine. Yes, the Z8 pro is propulsion, like the Ninebot G30 Max (and unlike the M365 series of Xiaomi). This offers the advantage of being able to lift the front wheel to pass small obstacles, where an M365 will tend to slip.

DSC03177

DSC03168

The indicators are really welcome, but their brightness lacks power in broad daylight. That said, we wonder why we do not find this possibility on other models. This is all the more effective at night, making this scooter a bit more visible in winter, when the sun sets at 5 p.m.

The real problem, and not the least, comes from the acceleration trigger. The latter that we can find on minimotors and other brands or generic rebadged models. This trigger is a wound. Its precision recalls that of the Nintendo 64 controller stick. But that’s not the worst.

On our test model, the calibration was so hazardous that I found myself completely stopped several times: by need to slow down by rolling, I dropped the trigger, then, by wanting to react, nothing. We had to sink the index finger thoroughly, release again then press to leave.

When it is not capricious, the trigger still lacks progressiveness in terms of its race, generating an “all or nothing” effect very unpleasant and little recommended for beginners.

In general, acceleration is very poorly managed by the scooter. One has the impression that she wants to go faster and that she cuts the juice. Then she puts the juice. Then she cuts the juice. We could call it the Philippe Katerine of electric scooters. So we are never at constant speed. It is a succession of variations which, in the long run, ends up tiring. It’s really a shame, because it annihilates all the pleasure brought by the other elements and therefore harms driving pleasure.

The color screen, meanwhile, is visible in full sun, but the very muddled interface is difficult to read when you are rolling.

Z8 pro driving and braking modes

There are 3 modes: from 1 to 3. The first limits the speed to 15 km/h and wants to be progressive. The second is a glide at 20 km/h maximum with a higher acceleration. The third gives access to the maximum limit authorized in Europe, 25 km/h. A simple press of the button allows you to go from one mode to another.

Let’s talk a bit about the power: if the 500 W of the engine are posted proudly, uphill, it is not the same lemonade. The scooter is struggling as much as any model with a single engine. On a fairly steep slope, we find ourselves rising slowly. But unless you live in the mountains, you will never really find at the end.

DSC03198

DSC03142

Braking is managed by two drums: one at the level of each wheel (which is surprising, since the technical documentation mentions discs, but let’s go). So yes, it brakes hard. Very strong. To the point of quickly blocking the wheel, including the rear wheel, and I have repeatedly slipped into slipping, especially on slippery coatings. We are first surprised, then we have fun very quickly after. It would therefore not be a problem if the brakes offered a little more progressiveness. We have, as for acceleration, an impression of “on/off”.

Z8 pro autonomy and recharge

The battery has a capacity of 15.6 Ah in 48 V. All this will offer you 35 km in European mode without blinking and even on courses with a lot of climbs. But do not count on the battery indicator which is quite imprecise. Basically, at the last notch of battery, you will have to hasten to return.

For recharging, it’s quite special: the scooter has no end of load indicator and only a green LED on the transformer will tell you that the process is finished. Ditto for the load itself. The LED of the red transformer tells you that it loads. Either. Allow approximately 4 hours for a full load.

DSC03218

DSC03137

There are two cards at the level of the deck to recharge this battery by the way. But a single charger is provided and no mention of these two sheets is present on the technical documentation.

Z8 Pro functionalities

Opposite, at 890 euros, no other scooter on the market offers so many options, some of which are really not gadgets such as suspensions (even if the possibility of adjusting them is not useful), the indicators or the Starting with a card operating in NFC.

DSC03213

DSC03132

My level in hacking being close to that of a newborn baby, I cannot say if this solution is secure sufficiently. But between the 20 kilos of the beast and the impossibility of riding with it, it can dissuade a pilfender. Opposite, for 699 euros, the Max G30 of Ninebot has tires tubeless (without air chamber) 10 inches, but which is freed from the rest.

This is a classic situation that we find in particular in telephony: a brand arrives with a technical sheet offering more than competition for a similar price. On this level, Zero is very strong, but at the expense of more basic elements.

Because these functions only stand out when the initial specifications are already completed. However, with the Z8 pro, on the three essential components of a good scooter, namely speed management, that of braking and balance, only the latter is satisfactory.

Let’s relativize: this scooter, despite its faults, is quite fun to drive for regulars looking for something more playful than a G30 Max or a Xiaomi M365. The overly brutal braking that makes the back slip a little, the adventurous appearance that allows you to play a little with the relief and the suspensions that transform the scooter into a trampoline offer a nice cocktail. But from there to spend 849 euros, there is a difficult step to take.

The Z brand offers an Z8 pro as entry of its range cut for large trips. A model with large measurements which promises great autonomy and first class comfort.

Presentation

The Zero brand) offers a wide range of electric scooters. The Chinese company focuses mainly on strong models, more road than Passe-Partout.

Despite its large size, the Z8 Pro is the entry level of the brand Z. It still benefits from a very solid technical sheet, with in particular a 500 W engine placed in the rear wheel, a 48 V battery and 15.6 Ah, suspensions at the front and rear and a Pair of drum brakes. Characteristics that show that the Z8 Pro is capable of climbing much higher than the 25 km/h authorized by French law. However, the Z8 Pro is sold restrained – if purchased from a respectable dealer – to comply with the Highway Code. The Z8 pro is negotiated between 800 and 1000 € depending on the merchants and the discounts practiced.

Writing note: 4 out of 5

Comfort and ergonomics

Massive, the Z8 pro is very clearly. This electric scooter clearly does not play in the courtyard of an e-Twow Booster V in terms of compactness. It displays a design with sharp lines and is largely dressed in fairly successful green khaki green aluminum. An impression of robustness clearly emerges from the machine. The finishes are serious, we do not deploy any game in the different parts. When unpacking, the brake levers and the screen block should simply be screwed. The Z brand has the good taste to provide a set of keys that will serve throughout the life of the scooter. A small tightening of regular screws is indeed very useful on this kind of racing car, especially if we face bumpy land.

The column supporting the handlebars is wide and its height can be adjusted simply by means of a tightening mechanism. Very practical to position the handlebars at the right height to be comfortably installed. It is thus almost 30 cm of amplitude which are offered to the user and which respond to different templates. Once the right height has been chosen and the tightening lever lowered, we found no flaws in this system.

The particularly large deck (20 cm wide and 58 cm long) easily welcomes both feet, even the biggest. Z makes the choice to cover this tray only 2 bands of grip for the hook. In use, we did not find to complain about this choice. The shoes always keep good adhesion on the surface. Particularity of the Z8 Pro, it has a small footrest that comes over the rear mudguard. The latter offers a very good support when you want to switch the weight back, whether it is a side of a sidewalk or achieving emergency braking. The Z8 pro takes advantage of the mudguard at the front and at the back, which is a good point to avoid dirty pants in the event of a wet roadway. However, the rear mudguard deserves to descend a little lower to completely ward off the projections.

In good road, the Z8 Pro has a fairly wide handlebar of 59 cm. What keep a perfect stability of the machine and hold the handlebars of one hand occasionally without the whole waving. Rubber handles are very comfortable, including growths on which to put the palms. Being able to position brake levers as you want is a real plus for user comfort. The left lever activates the drum brake of the rear wheel, while the one on the right takes care of the brake of the same type at the front. On the left, a small mechanical bell is present, as required by the legislation which now frames electric scooters.

The Z8 Pro adopts an interesting electronic locking system. When you want to start it, the scooter requires authentication through a small card containing a RFID chip. It may be able to dissuade certain thieves. Three of these cards are provided for the purchase of the scooter and can easily be attached to a keychain.

The accelerator is placed for its part under the index of the right hand and naturally takes place. This plastic appendage comes out of the block which integrates the screen. The latter displays, in color, essential information (instant speed, distance traveled, battery level, chosen speed and position lighting). When the external conditions are very bright, the display is lacking a bit of light to remain perfectly readable. Only the larger figures of instant speed are still visible, that’s already. Navigation in the few options is simply done using the “+” and “-” buttons. Long support on the first allows you to turn on and turn off the position lights.

These lights, too compulsory, are effective. At the front, two headlights are placed on each side of the deck. They effectively illuminate the road and offer a large field of vision. This device is much more effective than the simple LED lights found on the Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter 2 Pro or Pablo scooters. At the rear, two red position lights start to flash when one of the brake levers is used. Perfect to warn other users. The front of the column is covered with a strip of LEDs which is used more to be seen than to light the roadway.

Despite a very imposing format, the Z8 Pro can effectively fall back. To fold down the handlebars, simply pull the metal lever at the base of the gallows. The handles can also be folded down by simply unscrewing the part that keeps them. The Z scooter thus becomes more compact than a Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2, which remains very bulky when it is folded. The Z8 pro can be stored in a large cupboard or in the trunk of a car without too much trouble.

Writing note: 5 out of 5

Conduct

It is by rolling that the Z8 pro reveals its charms. As often on electric scooters, it offers 3 driving modes, each with its speed limit (5, 15 and 25 km/h). The first is particularly welcome to circulate without too much risk on a sidewalk, when it is allowed.

If in France the highway code requires electric scooters not to exceed 25 km/h, it is very quickly felt that the Z8 pro and its 500 W engine were not planned for this kind of constraint. The starts of the Chinese scooter are lively, without being too brutal. There is no need to launch the machine by pushing your foot so that the engine takes over. On the other hand, you must get used to light latency between support on the trigger and acceleration. Half a second time that may have its importance in certain situations which require reactivity. In use, the pilot ends up anticipating this little setback which finally forgets while riding.

It takes only 4 seconds at the Z8 pro to make the 0 to 25 km/h on the dish. The Z model is thus slightly faster than the Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2 and E-Twow Booster V, which require one more second to reach 25 km/h. The Z8 Pro seems to have trouble containing its ardor on the long straight lines. A few jolts are felt, the scooter accelerating slightly before being reminded to order by its controller which then reduces the speed. This phenomenon tends to dissipate as the battery empties. In the ribs, the power and the torque of the Z8 pro showing themselves precious. The machine is maintained at the same speed as on the dish, except on the really very marked slopes in which it abandons a few km/h. The rhythm changes in the ribs are also very well managed. Even after slowing down, the pilot can regain his maximum speed.

Like the Pablo, the Z8 Pro is capable of maintaining the same level of performance on all the endurance of its battery. A real point as it is common to try electric scooters whose capacity declines once the 50 % of the battery has crossed.

Z chose to put on his tire scooter with different sizes: an 8.5 -inch inflatable tire at the front and an 8 -inch tire at the rear. The first has a better handling for him, while the second does not fear punctures. A wise choice as it can be painful to change the tire of a wheel which integrates the electric motor.

One of the biggest assets of this pro Z8 lies in the presence of suspensions at the front and rear. This gives very great comfort to the machine, which absorbs without flinching most of the jacks that can be encountered on the road or cycle paths. It is even possible to take paths without too many problems. The Z8 pro being quite heavy, it will be more complicated to face urban environments with sidewalks to rise.

Let us talk about braking and the two drum brakes that provide excellent work to stop the pro Z8 launched at full speed. It still takes 5 meters to stop entirely, as much as an e-twow booster v requires.

Writing note: 4 out of 5

Autonomy

With such a big battery (15.6 Ah in 48 V), the Z8 pro can make beautiful endurance promises. And once is not custom, a scooter approached very close to its promise of autonomy. The Z brand advances 50 km maximum, we have traveled 48 before having to recharge the machine. It should be noted that this low gap – quite rare – is undoubtedly due to the fact that the “French” pro Z8 is bridled at 25 km/h and the 40 km/h of certain other markets. This remains any very solid for an electric scooter. In our comparison, the Z8 Pro is quite far ahead of models like the Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2 (32 km) or the E-Twow Booster V (31 km). Note that our z8 pro autonomy measures were carried out by an outside temperature of around 15 ° C and with a driver of 65 kg on the back. A heavier user or a lower ambient temperature will have a negative impact on the number of kilometers traveled.

In return, it took us 7 h 30 min to fully recharge the empty battery of the Z8 pro. A time that it is possible to divide by 2 in the event of the use of a second charger. Z electric scooter having the distinction of having 2 sockets for its recharge. Nevertheless, a single charger is provided with the default Z8 pro.
