On paper, it may seem that the Xbox One X is a more powerful system, with more RAM and a stronger GPU. The Xbox One X has been designed (and priced) as the most powerful console in the world when it comes out. But it was strongly limited by its CPU Jaguar, which is at its architecture the same CPU (despite some improvements) as that of the basic Xbox One of 2013.

The Xbox One X aimed to offer 4K gaming with GPU improvements. The Outer Worlds, the Gears 5 campaign, Wasteland 3, and various other games run in 4K resolution on Xbox One X, with improvements. The technicians of the Digital Foundry site are renowned for their sharp analyzes of the video game industry, to the point of becoming a real reference in the field. One of the latest videos embarks on a daring, even controversial comparison, asking a simple question: a 2017 Xbox One X could compete with an Xbox Series S of 2020 ? The conclusions of their analyzes could surprise you.

The Xbox One X has not said its last word !

Remember, it was in 2017: Microsoft surprised its world by offering the most powerful market console on the Salon for the Salon. The Xbox One X offered unmatched performance players and a native 4K definition on more than a hundred optimized games. Above all, it marked a marketing turning point for the brand which would now offer two ranges of consoles: “S” for immediate accessibility and “X” for advanced technological performance.

When the Series have been formalized and their characteristics made public, those of the “S” surprised to the point of opening the debates and a taboo question: the Xbox One X would be more powerful than its little sister ? The Digital Foundry site compared the two devices for a confrontation cross-gen direct. To achieve the following results, the Xbox One X has been equipped with an external T7 SSD from Samsung; the most affordable way to get closer to the performance offered by that of the Xbox Series S.

Digital Foundry’s analysis insists on three fundamental comparison points: performance on recent games (Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, Far Cry 6, etc.), loading times and retrocompatible games.

Recent games

We noticed it during our large Xbox Series S: The visual performance of the smallest of Microsoft consoles are clearly below what the Xbox One X can offer. Regarding the second point, there is no match: the Xbox series processor coupled with the internal SSD allows clearly reduced loading times compared to the previous generation. However, coupling an Xbox One X with a recent external SSD offers interesting performances which will reduce by almost 50 % (or more) the loading times at stake, bringing this combination of what the Xbox Series Sries Sries proposed closer.
