November 10, 2022 at 5:23 PM
Smart has developed and, after having conquered the two -seater city center segment with Fortwo, it now offers its first electric SUV called Smart #1.
Born of the joint venture between the German Mercedes-Benz and the Chinese Geely, the “new smart” represents the development of the brand to offer a full range of electric cars, targeting a new audience and positioning itself in a market segment unprecedented.
But what exactly is the new positioning of Smart ? What audience is the SMART electric SUV for ? What is its competition on the French market also, with a basic price of 39,990 euros ? Let’s discover it together.
- Elegant style and relaxation area
- For those looking for power and flexibility of load
- Customizable and hyperconnected for maximum freedom
- Buy it online
- Buy it from an intelligent network agent
- Over 400 km of autonomy
- From 39,990 euros (less government bonus)
- Service and warranty
Elegant style and relaxation area
The first thing to note is that Smart #1 is distinguished in the landscape of electric SUVs and crossovers thanks to a certain number of unique characteristics. First of all, there is a modern and original style which, developed by a European and Chinese team under the direction of Gorden Wagener, aims to “Position Smart as a leading design brand”.
The shape and proportions of Smart #1, as well as its external and interior equipment and measures, are indeed designed to seduce customers who are looking for a compact and habitable electric car, comfortable in town as outside. The length of 4.27 meters is particularly interesting, because developed thanks to a native electrical platform, the exterior dimensions of the B segment offer a “bright, spacious and modular” living room “which allows five people to travel comfortably.
For smart the #1 is not interested in direct or indirect competitors, but has the main challenge of “Make total electric mobility increasingly accessible and guaranteeing a user experience and preservation of value over time that respect the investment that an intelligent customer decides to do”. That said, a short list of the main smart competitors should be drawn up on the electric cars market.
Smart#1 and its competitors: classification by length
Models | Length |
Citroen E-C4 | 4.36 m |
Cupra Born | 4.32 m |
Peugeot E-2008 | 4.30 m |

Hyunda Kona Electric | 4.20 m |
Opel Mokka-e | 4.15 m |
DS 3 e-Tense | 4.11 m |
Jeep Avenger | 4.08 m |
According to the table above, it is easy to note that the Smart #1 is located in the middle of the classification in terms of length, with its 4.27 meters straddling between segment B and the more compact segment, but with a favorable relationship between external dimensions and interior habitability.
For those looking for power and flexibility of load
Nor should you underestimate the more exquisite technical side of the Smart #1, a battery SUV which particularly emphasizes power, from the rear propulsion input version which develops 272 hp. No competitor is as well in this particular segment of the VE and the Smart #1 Brabus of 428 hp with all -wheel drive reaches unknown sporting levels in competition. Just mention the 3.9 seconds for the exercise from 0 to 100 km/h.
Another peculiarity, the Smart #1 is capable of recharging the battery in direct current at more than 150 kW (from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes) and by alternating up to 22 kW (from 10% to 80% in less than 3 hours) to fully enjoy the most common Wallbox.
Smart#1 and its competitors: classification by power

Citroen E-C4 | 136 CH |
Opel Mokka-e | 136 CH |
Peugeot E-2008 | 136 CH |
This does not mean that Smart #1 is only aimed at customers looking for speed and acceleration. The first smart -powered smart has much more to offer, namely “An experience of careless mobility”. The declared objective of the new smart is to attract urban professionals, young families and avant-garde always open to novelty, because the smart #1 “is a statement, the intelligent choice of those who want to interpret the spirit of mobility today”.
Customizable and hyperconnected for maximum freedom
Particularly evolved, its digital ecosystem was created for this evolution of the Smart brand which, from Smart #1, offers computer architecture guaranteeing remote dynamic updates (Over-the-Air) for more than 70% Control units.
Another essential aspect for Smart is personalization, that is to say the capacity of the car to reflect the tastes, choices and moods of its owner, of the time of purchase at the time of use. This is why a customizable user interface with a dedicated avatar and voice commands, based on artificial intelligence and connected to the cloud, is provided on SMART #1. All this is concentrated in the digital instrument combination and the infotainment system developed by Ecart for Smart in order to transparently integrate the hardware and the software.
The very idea of a hyperconnected vehicle is reflected in the capacity of Smart #1 to offer so much technology with an interface that simplifies, releases and “makes human interaction, warm and fun”. An example of this desire to offer comes from the key to all smart #1, which is digital, dematerialized and shareable via the “Hello Smart” application on the phone. But the watchword in terms of smart is freedom and each customer can therefore choose, in addition to the digital key, a physical key with the option of a remote control to keep in his pocket.

In addition to the online purchase with delivery to the chosen agent, the customer can count on the assistance of an intelligent network agent, with the possibility of going from one mode to another as many times as he wishes, choosing how and when to be assisted.
