Is the iPhone 14 waterproof ?

The new generation of Apple smartphones is now official. But is it recommended for swimmers, beach lovers or clumsy ?

The iPhone 14 series – also including iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max – has finally been officially presented by Apple, and as you can expect from the most advanced iPhones of All time, they display a price up.

Whether you spend € 1,019 for the most basic model, or € 2,129 for the pro max delivered with 1 to storage, you will make a substantial investment … that you will probably want to protect.

With this in mind, you may wonder if iPhones 14 are waterproof, and if so, at what level. Rest assured: they want to be adorned to withstand any splash, and a little more.

Your iPhone has taken the water – what to do ?

Yes, the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are all waterproof. They are classified IP68 according to standard IEC 60529.

This means that they can be immersed at a maximum depth of six meters for half an hour. This certification also means that all of these smartphones resist dust.

A point that has often been controversial in recent years. The iPhone 7 was the first iPhone to offer semi-slattering protection, but at the beginning of 2022, a lawsuit against the company suggested that Apple’s marketing statements were proved to be “false and misleading“, concerning the tightness of the iPhone.

The complainants claimed that their phones had been damaged by one “liquid contact“, despite the abovementioned IP68 accreditation. The judge said the complainants were unable to demonstrate that damage had been caused in this way, however.

In 2020, an Italian court sentenced Apple to a fine of $ 12 million for not specifying that its waterproofing tests had been carried out in very specific situations – without taking into account scenarios such as the fall of a Telephone in a lake during a fishing game, or handling the mobile device by a child with wet hands.

Will Apple repair devices with “liquid contact” indications ?

Apple’s warranty does not cover the damage caused by a liquid, so if you are likely to swim more than six meters deep for more than half an hour, it is preferable to keep your iPhone in a dry place.

In fact, the only way for Apple to repair an iPhone damaged by a liquid is that its owner has Applecare protection+.

This is optional paid insurance available when you first acquire your iPhone for € 12.49 per month (or € 15.49 monthly if you want any compensation after flight or loss of your iPhone).

Applecare+ coverage allows two repairs or replacements for accidental damage in the same year. The damage caused by water (or any other liquid) should be covered by one of these two guarantees – you can bring your phone in an Apple Store and get a new device for a standard cost.
