Volkswagen ID test.5 (2022): at the forefront of fashion?, Volkswagen ID.5: all models, prices and technical sheets

Volkswagen ID.5

ID.5 pro performance of 204 hp is provided with an electric motor mounted at the rear axle. It delivers 310 Nm of torque, 0 to 100 km/h is shipped in 8.4 seconds and the maximum speed is 160 km/h. It is generally sufficient to move this kind of vehicle, whose synthesis is rather good with the 19 -inch “small rims”.

Volkswagen ID test.5 (2022): at the forefront of fashion ?

On paper, the Volkswagen ID.5 Check all the boxes of the successful modern car: SUV, coupe, electric and technological. But what about reality ?

The ID family is growing at Volkswagen. After the ID.3, the ID.4 and the ID. Buzz, it’s ID’s turn.5 to start your commercial career. The one that could be defined as an ID.4 Coupé is, indeed, a more “dynamic” variant of the brand’s electric family SUV.

Depending on the angle of the photos, the differences between the ID.4 and the ID.5 will be more or less marked. There are a few changes in terms of grille, but nothing that really jumps out.

The main difference is at the rear, with a fleeting pavilion drop and 1.2 cm less at the rear part of the roof compared to the ID.4 The rear side also changes, with the same light signature, but with the presence of a new spout in the rear window base.

In terms of dimensions, ID.5 measures 4.60 meters, two small centimeters more than the ID.4. With 1.85 meters wide (without the mirrors) and 1.61 meters high, the ID.5 is a beautiful baby, and it is not the 2.1 tonnes of our pro -performance test version that will contradict us.

Practically unchanged habitability

ID.5 Beautifully play on the aesthetic side with this profile of coupé, it remains a vehicle with family vocations. Habitability is therefore important, and, good surprise, despite the plane at the pavilion, the space on board remains excellent.

ID.5 is based on the ID platform.3, stretched over 30 centimeters, mainly on the rear overhang, thus making it possible to gain space for the rear seats. The roof guard remains good and two adults of 1.80 meters will feel rather comfortable.

For the trunk, Volkswagen announces a capacity ranging from 549 to 1561 liters with a double floor coming to form a flat load surface when the files are folded down. These are 6 liters more than the ID.4 in configuration 5 places and 214 liters less once the bench folded.

Finally progress inside ?

After having made the external inventory and check the practicality of our day mount, let’s now go inside. If the interns of the latest productions of the brand, and in particular the ID range, left us on our hunger, it’s the same for the ID.5 which is none other than a copy/glued of the ID.4. Minimalism enthusiasts will be with angels, those who prefer ergonomics a little less.

The dashboard is clean, a little too much even for our taste, all the controls being grouped within the 12 -inch touch screen. The materials are of good quality for the upper parts, a little less for the lower parts with hard plastics. Overall, a Skoda Enyaq has a slightly warmer and less austere interior, with also more careful work in terms of certain materials.

The 12 -inch touch screen has the Discover Pro Max, a fairly muddled system, although the graphics are quite neat. We get lost fairly quickly in the submenus, especially when we have to adjust ventilation. There are many submenuss, too many even, and for once, having physical shortcuts at the dashboard would have made it possible to have a more ergonomic and less complicated set for use.

The small 5.3 -inch screen located under the driver’s eyes is a bit “lost”. This allows you to display the directions, driving aids, speed and other information related to the electric motorization of the car.

In terms of technologies, on the other hand, there is almost nothing missing. ID.5 Apple Carplay and Android Auto, available with or without wireless, two USB-C ports and an induction charger for smartphone, an on-board navigation system with a planner allowing to take into account the necessary stops for recharging, while signaling The terminals available on the journey, the voice command with new personal assistant connected to the Internet, the possibility of receiving remote updates (scheduled every 12 weeks) or several inter-vehicle communication technologies Car2X.

Do you want more ? Now let’s move on to those related to driving aids. We therefore find adaptive cruise control, automated driving in case of traffic jams, collision alert, automatic emergency braking or, and it is a novelty, the possibility of letting the car double on a highway thanks to a simple pulse on the turn signal. The latter, which we have tried, is very gadget, but will certainly have an important role to play in developments leading to the autonomy of our cars.

ID.5 also has a “memorization” function for maneuvers and is capable of remembering the last meters traveled before to reverse them, simply pressing a button.

Battery, recharge and autonomy

Let’s talk little let’s talk about numbers now, and there again it is a copy/glued to the ID.4. Autonomy under the WLTP cycle is announced at 513 km for our pro performance test model with the 77 kWh battery (the only one available for the moment) and the 204 hp engine. Another version called Pro of 174 hp, with the same battery, is available. The range is wearing a GTX sporting variant of 299 hp.

On this kind of test with the already established course and tight timing, difficult to assess autonomy and consumption. We noted an average of around 21 kWh/100 km during our course, with a mixed use oscillating between highways, departmental and some crossings of villages. In view of our consumption, we could have hoped to do about 350 km with a lot of electrons.

Regarding recharging, we did not really need to recharge on our journey. We simply made a little pit stop at an Ionity charging station. With 70 % battery when loading, the charging power did not exceed 70 kW, but nothing abnormal since the battery benefited from a still high load.

Volkswagen announces a maximum load power of 135 kW, enough to refuel in about 29 minutes on a quick terminal. It takes 7:30 am on an 11 kW terminal, and more than 42 hours to go from 0 to 100 % on a domestic socket.

On the road

For our test, we were able to take charge at first a GTX version with the DCC controlled suspension and the 21 -inch rims. More dynamic than comfortable, this version has been curiously suspended, and even the DCC suspension and its 15 different settings did not manage to seduce us. Far too firm in sport mode, the rear axle tends to hop at the slightest asperity, while in comfort mode, it becomes almost caricatured with an unpleasant pumping phenomenon at low speed.

The next day, the grip of a pro performance version, without the DCC suspension and with the 19 -inch rims, has largely corrected the firing. Volkswagen confirmed to us that engineers had not used the same software between ID.4 and the ID.5, without giving us more indications. There was undoubtedly a desire to make the ID.5 more dynamic, and this is the case in relation to an ID.4, but it is done at the expense of comfort.

Prices and competition

At Volkswagen, within the ID range, there are no more finishes but equipment packs: design, infotainment, comfort, assistance and sport. In France, the ID.5 starts from 52,550 euros (excluding bonuses of 2000 euros), or about 10,000 euros more than an ID.4 with equivalent motorization ! A chasm which is justified, in part, by a more complete standard endowment for the ID.5. Basic, we find, for example, heated seats, the adaptive cruise control, navigation or the rear view camera.

On the competition side, there are some already well -armed models, especially internally. The Skoda Enyaq Coupé IV and other Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback may be good alternatives, even if they exchange more expensive than Volkswagen.

Americans are not to be outdone with the formidable Ford Mustang Mach-E, more dynamic but not necessarily less uncomfortable. At the entry level, the car has a 76 kWh battery and a 269 hp engine. Ford claims 56,400 euros for its model with the two -wheel drive, or 3,850 euros more compared to the ID.5.

Let us not also forget the now essential Tesla Model Y, more expensive (64,990 euros), but also more powerful, more enduring with a single load, and more habitable. Thanks to the opening of the Gigafactory of Berlin, the delivery times in Europe have shortcuts considerably. What give some cold sweats to the ID.5, which remains less expensive than all its competitors.

Good points Negative points
Habitability Deteriorated comfort with large rims
Dynamism Largely perfectible ergonomics
The “cheaper” of his segment Some medium quality materials

Volkswagen ID.5

After the ID.3 and the ID.4, Volkswagen completed its 100% electric range with the ID.5. This SUV offers three different versions with variable autonomies as well as modern technological endowment, all wrapped in a very popular crossover look. Last editorial test Read our test of this model

The look and dimensions of the Volkswagen ID electric SUV.5

ID.5 is not really a 100% unique model since it is no more or less than an ID.4 bodied in coupe. The two models share their platform, their mechanics and their interior. From the outside, the ID.5 is distinguished by a much more pronounced roof fall and a spout located on the tailgate. For the rest he takes up the front, the body line or the front and rear front strips that appeared on his standard brother. Compared to the latter, the more fleeting line model is only lengthened by 2 centimeters (4.60 m) and lowers 2 centimeters (1.61 m).

Inspired by the ID.3, the habitable welcomes occupants in a stripped and technological atmosphere. A 12 -inch touch screen, offering the vocal command (standard) overlooks the dashboard. It is seconded by a 5.3 -inch module placed behind the steering wheel. Apple Carplay and Android Auto systems are also part. Few physical commands accentuate the impression of modernity. The space on board is similar to that of the ID.4. Only a few centimeters have been nibbled by the roof falling here lower.

In the catalog, three engines: pro with 174 hp; Pro performance and its 204 hp; GTX strong of 299 equines. In any case, it is necessary to count on a 77 kW lithium-ion battery. The first two versions boast of 513 km of autonomy when the third fall at 489 km traveling. GTX is the only variant to be delivered in four -wheel drive. Its less powerful counterparts are only propulsions.

On the recharge side you will have to wait 42 hours using a 1.8 kW socket. A 11 kW terminal accelerates the pace and drops the wait at 7:30 a.m. On a 135 kW module, 29 minutes are enough to recharge from 5 to 80%. This time increases 36 minutes on the GTX.
