Just like with his illustrious ancestor “Bulli” T1, Volkswagen intends to make the ID buzz his Van to do everything. Recognize that the test begins in a good mood. Rarely so many thumbs up and sympathy was addressed to us during a utility van test ! The cargo cargo is therefore aimed at professionals (deliverers, craftsmen) who gravitate in the mainly peri-urban area. Possibly, to surfers or backpackers (easy) in search of a nice electric van to look at. A niche, for these.
The payload is logically penalized by the heavy batteries: the ID.Cargo buzz can embark 648 kg. The Volkswagen Transporter T6, which remains in the catalog, offers between 800 kg and just over 1 ton depending on the versions.

Volume, but not too heavy preferably
The freighter is available in several configurations: toilet on the driver’s side, provided with a sliding door on the passenger side, or on both sides optional (€ 460). At the rear, the choice is left between hinged doors or an electric tailgate, all the same charged 1.000 €. The question does not arise, anyway, if you want to access it with a telescopic charger (compulsory hinges, necessarily). Regarding loading, the total capacity is rather interesting with 3.9 m3 in total despite the relatively high floor, batteries oblige . The total surface (2.23 m by 1.23 m between wheel arches, 1.79 m above) also allows you to accommodate two standard European pallets . On the sides, there are fixing rails allowing to hang rings for straps or various accessories. We can imagine storage bins for tools, for example.
But be careful not to load the mule too much: the buzz id is heavy, not surprising, and still accuses 2.352 kg. The weight of the batteries is fatally paid on the payload, quite modest: 648 kg. For antique dealers or craftsmen who do not have to move brick pallets, that does the trick. For an electrician in any case, in terms of image, this fits perfectly ! If necessary, it is also possible to tow maximum 1 ton (brake trailer).
Volkswagen Tape Strong Prices ! Almost 48.000 € HT (more than 57.000 € including tax) in base price, and the look is paid at a high price: 2.€ 660 for 20 -inch rims, 1.520 € for two-tone painting, 1.000 € for the electric tailgate.
On the driving position, there too, the practical aspects are rather well studied. There are many storage storage: a large tank in front of the dashboard (at the foot of the windshield), a space above the glove box or a console between the seats (alas as an option, € 155). The environment is similar to that of ID. “Civil” buzz, but the presentation was logically simplified. No color finishes or other funny details, we are here at work ! The freighter therefore prefers hard and dark plastics, robust. On the other hand, he inherits the VP version of the same instrumentation and media interface screens. Shared with all electric Volkswagen designed on the MEB platform. Too small and minimalist for the first, not very practical for the second ergonomics question. Finally, let us note the impossibility, at the launch at least, to have an open glass surface behind the head: visibility would win there. Instead, only a paved separation between cabin and loading space is offered.
On the road: the funest of vans ?
No technical particularity distinguishes the cargo of the family Buzz ID, except the reinforced rear suspension to collect any loads. The sway has also firmer, curiously. The difference is especially sensitive at low speed and, fortunately, does not spoil the comfort overall of very good level. The road touch is properly filtered, the body movements well contained, and the car is literally riveted to the ground. The architecture is special: the wheels in the four corners, a huge wheelbase, the batteries in the foundations. all in propulsion, with rear motor ! This results in reassuring stability and relatively agile behavior. Especially in town, where the robbery diameter (11.1 m) allows you to sneak. On a van of this size, it’s rare. Remains its width, problematic in a narrow city center.
Mode B allows powerful recovery in deceleration. We drive almost one foot, without touching the brakes. Well in town, but disturbing on the road. In any case, we forget the 416 km of autonomy promised if we venture on a fast track.
Regarding performance, there too the figures are at the end: as on the Buzz VP ID, the electric motor delivers 204 hp and an immediate torque of 310 nm. Costaud, which allows canon starts to the red light. And a little more (10.2 s from 0 to 100 km/h). Then it’s less shiny. The very high weight penalizes reminders, linear as the 100 km/h approaches. Anyway, the cargo caps at 145 km/h and does not like to drag on a fast track.
Like all electric, the highway is fatal for autonomy. Grievance still accentuated with a heavy car whose aerodynamics is not exemplary ! Result, from 19 kWh to mixed course mixing city and road (a rather good figure, in itself), a passage on the highway at 130 km / h increased the average consumption of our test at almost 24 kWh / 100 km. As an indication, our route was made up of 120 km of moderately hilly road, 20 km of peri-urban and downtown journeys, and 40 km of fast track. Under these conditions, the 77 kWh battery (present on other models in the ID range) does not allow much more than 300 km of autonomy. By staying away from the fast tracks, we can however consider traveling 400 km on a single load. If the use lends itself to it, the radius of action is consistent.
The driving position takes up that of the Buzz VP ID, but the presentation and the materials are simpler. On the other hand, we find the (too) small instrumentation screen, and the same media interface (not very practical).
No surprise or revolution concerning recharging, the services of the electric “combi” are in the vein of what Volkswagen offers (therefore, without standing the lot): in charge fast Combo CCS, it accepts up to 170 kW, allowing to go from 5 to 80 % in approximately 30 minutes. The load on a classic terminal caps at 11 kW, as for most current electricity (7:30 am for a full cycle).
Prices: be friends with your accountant.
It’s recommended. Get along well with your banker, also. Because the very friendly image of the Buzz Cargo ID is billed at a high price: 47.990 € excluding taxes (57.€ 588 including tax), and the bonus of 5.000 € is a very meager consolation. Please note, the price is still climbing by drawing in the many options ! Opposite, a Peugeot E-Expert is cheaper (37.000 € excl. But less efficient in DC recharge, and otherwise less stylish.
TVS exemption can play, however, as is the fuel budget replaced by a kWh at 0.17 €. At least to date, and provided that it is only recharged on the 220 V socket of the garage ! On DC rapid chargers, it is not the same story and varies enormously depending on the operators.
