Driving

In terms of driving, no upheaval for the new ID3 version 2023 and we find the good and bad of the first generation because nothing has been changed in this area. The good with suspensions that provide very good handling, driving pleasure and appreciable comfort, very good robbery diameters and very appreciable visibility. Thank you to the evolution of the electronics which made it possible to gain in performance.
  • The most powerful, which equips the ID3 pro S, is a capacity of 77 kWh net for a couple of 310 Nm and an autonomy between 545 and 557 km in mixed cycle with official consumption between 15.4 and 15 , 7 kWh/100 km.

Having taken the wheel of the smallest version, we will see an average consumption of 14 kWh/100 km over 200 km of country roads and fast tracks limited to 110 km/h. It is therefore better than the value announced by the manufacturer, a fact rare enough to report it. In ten years, Volkswagen will no longer produce thermal engines. To do this, it is better to count on a solid electric range and from the right foot. In the middle of the launch phase of a whole new electric range, Volkswagen returned to his compact sedan to correct the last signs of precipitation from a period of distant appearance: that of the dieselgate.

Precipitation, savings, lack of competence … The flaws of ID3 are explained by many reasons and the market does not help: in 2021 already, it was already necessary to face strong competition, made up of course of the Tesla Model 3, but also the arrival of the electric Fiat 500 and Dacia Spring for the smallest budgets. So that the sales of Volkswagen ID3 collapsed in half, in 2022, when the shortage of the components came to add its grain of salt.

3 advantages of the new Volkswagen ID3

1) A more dignified interior

The new ID3 has most of its changes in its cabin. It was difficult to judge him in the photos, but the result is clearly visible once on the electric car. Mainly in terms of door dressing, Volkswagen has treated the front seats like the rear shelf. The visible and poor quality plastics of the first generation are largely replaced and we are closer to the Volkswagen quality that we would expect and that we would find on board a thermal or hybrid model.

The minimalist aspect of the first ID3 is always present, with this small module placed behind the steering wheel to display the speed (no meters, and the strict minimum as information), but it continues to do the charm and the customer interest. To avoid frustrating others, Volkswagen has integrated a new touch screen into its new ID3 2023, expanded to 12 inch. Due to its size and inclination, it is a little less oriented exclusively towards the driver and will serve as an entertainment screen more.

2) a less childish style

Difficult once again to notice it without comparing them face to face, but the two Volkswagen ID3 are very different on their front side. The hood no longer has this two-tone color, with a dark part near the windshield. We take up a more classic style, with two small ribs on both sides near the lights. The rest of the changes are at the shield, again more conventional, although more aggressive and aerodynamic. A very slightly recovered detail in the light signature reworked at the rear.

3) New 77 kWh battery

Most Volkswagen ID3 customers choose the 58 kWh battery version. There are only two in the range, and the second is 77 kWh. With the new ID3, it evolves. At least, it changes from origin. Volkswagen is now obtaining from SK Innovation. The 58 kWh battery is still an LG battery and is not affected by the changes made on the 77 kWh battery.

These changes, who are they ? Volkswagen did not indicate any modification in the autonomy (the engine of the ID3 is the same, with its 204 hp) and we could not measure any change either change. That said, for recharging, it is now possible to rise to a power of 170 kW, much higher than the 135 kW previously. This makes the ID3 recharge as powerful as that of the Buzz ID, which takes up the same battery with the same supplier. The super-chargers stops are even shorter.

1) No improvement for autonomy

Unfortunately for the two batteries, the autonomy does not change on the new ID3. Software developments in the past three years have saved “An additional ten kilometers”, explained a brand framework for us, but no optimization specific to the restyled model is to be seen. In the absence, the ID3 pro performance (58 kWh) is not better than the Tesla Model 3, with whom it stood in its standard version more. Facing the Propulsion model, the Volkswagen ID3 is beaten. It will therefore be necessary to count around 350 kilometers in mixed consumption, and 300 kilometers on the highway, with the 58 kWh version. The Pro S version will have an additional hundred kilometers. The course of our test was generally flat, with optimal climatic conditions, without having to use heating or air conditioning. Result, a consumption of 15.2 kWh per 100 kilometers recorded. To be driven, the pro performance version (58 kWh) is slightly more lively than the pro S version (77 kWh), but a little less well amortized at low speed.

2) Always integration and screen defects

On the side of the ID3 defects, again and again these screen concerns. Oddly, they are more noticeable on the ID3 than on the other models in the range, while all use the same parts and the same software. But the global experience, especially in terms of navigation, is still not completely neat. Same thing with the voice command, which is triggered for no reason. Ergonomics still preaches despite the minimalist aspect of the car. Whether in the complex deactivation of certain driving aids at each restart, or in the overall limited appearance of the software in the face of competitors like Tesla.

In terms of steering wheel, it is missed for those who hoped to see the return of physical pimples. Introduced in 2019, touch buttons are always integrated into the new ID3, and the latter are far from practical. They even caused more trouble than anything to customers and it doesn’t take much time while driving the car to realize it. 3) Choices to the client’s disappointment

Deliveries from the new restyled ID3 are preparing and barely three years after the copies of the first version, Volkswagen still seems to be in a hurry. Our opinion on the restyled Volkswagen ID3

Always as practical, handy, silent and minimalist, the new ID3 barely returns three years after its first iteration with the promise to set up its original flaws. Unfortunately, the challenge is not completely successful. If the Volkswagen ID3 is one of the best electric cars on the market and the best equipped, it remains one of those that give birth to the most frustrations to customers. The prices do not help anything, even if the pro performance version and its 58 kWh battery still manage to trigger the ecological bonus of 5000 euros.

Finally, it is the 77 kWh version which benefits the most of the restyling 2023, but its reinforced charging power is penalized by this concern for approval which still obliges Volkswagen to condemn its central place on the rear shelf, and limit the capacities of The four passenger car. Everyone will be well installed, the car has space, but a model 3 will always be more interesting to go on vacation the full trunk.
