iPhone: how to create your custom ringtone for free from an audio file

Change iPhone ringtone

You can transform an audio file into a ringtone in iOS, without having to go through iTunes. We show you how to proceed with the free garage band app.

If you want to change your iPhone ringtone and replace it with music of your choice, you will quickly see that iOS does not facilitate your task. Thus, it is not possible to directly access the ringtone folder by connecting the smartphone to a PC, unlike Android. The operation is however achievable, for a few manipulations. Here is how to proceed with the apps installed on the iPhone.

1 – Download your audio file

Put your audio file (WAV, MP3, AIFF or AAC) online with a service like WETRANSFER or SMASH. You can also store it in the ICLOUD files app on your computer. Then launch Safari and download the file.

Then touch the choice Options, Then Save in files. Choose Downloads in the list and touch the button Save top right.

2 – Import the file in Garage Band

Garage Band is a musical creation and audio assembly app that is normally present on your iPhone. If not, you can download it for free.

Launch it and touch the button “+” top right to start a new project. Choose The audio recorder by scrolling the screens with the finger, then touch the icon Voice.

Disable the metronome (right of the red round), then touch the third icon at the top from the left.

In the next window, touch the loop icon (penultimate) at the top.

Select Files At the top of the screen, then at the bottom touch on Browse the items from the Files app.

Go to the file Downloads And touch your audio file. It is then automatically added to the Garage Band files.

3 – Adjust the file according to your desires

Then touch the audio file in a long way to drag it to the view Tracks. Using the buttons placed on each side, you adjust the start and the end of the track. If it is too long, only the first 30 seconds will be recorded for the ringtone.

If you touch the track extended, you can also access additional functions, for example to cut portions. To listen to the result of your modifications, touch the reading icon (white triangle next to the red round) at the top of the screen.

4 – Transform your audio track into ringtone

Touch the triangle icon at the top left, then My songs.

Touch your new song in a prolonged way, then touch Share in the list that appears.

Touch Alarm in the screen that appears.

Give your ringtone a name, then touch Export top right. Then touch Use sound as .. Then choose Standard ringtone.

5 – Manage your ringtones

You can then choose a personalized ringtone, or go back to one of the many ringtones offered by Apple. And if you want to delete one of the ringtones you have created, perform a horizontal sweep to the left.
