A five -year contract, and (only) two lots

First surprise of this call for tenders: TV broadcasting rights earn an additional year, and now last five years – from the 2024/2025 season to the 2028/2029 season. The LFP has also simplified its prizes by reducing them to two by championship.

For Ligue 1, it offers a first premium lot containing three of the best games of each championship day, and a second with the other six games.

The price of Lot 1 starts at 530 million euros, and that of Lot 2 begins at 270 million. It should be noted that the buyer of Lot 1 will be entitled to three time boxes of his choice.

On the Ligue 2 side, Lot 1 contains the two best posters of each championship day, while Lot 2 is entitled to the other seven meetings.

The prices are obviously lower: the price of Lot 1 starts at 26 million euros, and that of lot 2 to 13 million euros.

Also note, all these prizes of matches include live and quasi-direct rights, currently held by free. This therefore centralizes the offers, and makes the battle to obtain them more interesting.

Finally, beyond these lots of matches, the LFP also sold prizes “Magazines”, for programs scheduled for Saturday and Sunday evening (lot 3), Sunday morning (lot 4), or on weekdays (Lot 5).

Modified programming, the poster of Sunday 1 p.m. deleted

The LFP also made some changes to the programming of the matches during these future seasons.

If the cult posters of Friday evening, Saturday 5 p.m. and Sunday at 8:45 p.m. are preserved, the LFP ends on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Ligue 1, it being transferred to Ligue 2, and moves it at 3 p.m.

In addition, the usual Sunday multiplex – with three games simultaneously – is shifted from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The end of an era.

Which will broadcast Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 between 2024 and 2029 ?

This is the question that persists, and bets are open. If Amazon Prime Video (7 meetings per day) and Canal+ (two meetings per day) are currently sharing the broadcast of French football, this paradigm may change in the years to come.

The encrypted channel has been little interested in renewing its investment for five years, and prefers to put its balls on Formula 1, cinema and rugby.

This leaves the field open to streaming platforms, starting with Prime Video. But Amazon’s service will have to deal with other interested services, including Apple TV+. and especially Dazn.

The “Netflix of Sport”-present in Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom-intends to expand its football offer with the French elite. Dazn is already one of the Canal+offers, which allows him to co-institute two Ligue 1 games per day.

Response at the end of the call for tenders, on October 17, 2023 for Ligue 1 and October 20, 2023 for Ligue 2.
