Finally, the DCI-P3 colorimetric space is 93.8 %covered, according to our measures in FilmMaker mode while the most demanding colorimetric space, the most demanding, is covered at 72.4 %. It is much better than the covers of the same colorimetric spaces offered by the previous generation (87 % and 64 % respectively) and even very slightly higher than the values measured on the Samsung QN95B (respectively 93.3 % and 70 %). These measures remain clearly below those we have been able to make on the Samsung S95B which uses QD-Oled technology offering 99 % covers for DCI-P3 and 89 % for the BT2020, always with the same mode of picture.

Our full opinion
Samsung qe65qn800b (2022)

December 24, 2022 24/12/2022 • 16:23

The SAMSUNG QE65QN800B TV is a high-end model, positioned just below the ultimate reference in terms of ultra HD 8K display in the South Korean manufacturer, the Qn900B series (brighter and with a more powerful audio system). It is equipped with an LCD slab goes with a quantum dots filter for colors.

The mini-LED backlight system is promising blooming particularly limited. Embarking the last image processor developed by Samsung, he wants to put content on a scale in such a masterful way as possible and in this area, given the poverty of the catalog of ultra HD 8K content available, there is work.

Let’s not forget the some skills in terms of video game display, the TV with 4 HDMI 2 entries.1, so all compatible with the latest optimization technologies. Qn800B is available in version 65, 75 and 85 inch, we were able to test the first to give you our impressions.

Samsung qe65qn800b (2022) Design: a central foot which also serves as a support for the One Connect case

The Qn800B series takes over the design of the previous generation, Qn800a, itself drawing inspiration from the Q800T series that begins to date.

We are therefore entitled to a very large place made to the image with extremely fine edges. All around the image, these are 6 mm thick, to which must be added barely 2 mm for aluminum framing of the slab. The screen benefits from a thickness of only 1.8 cm over its entire surface.

This feat of finesse for an LCD TV is possible thanks to the outsourcing of the electronic part contained in the One Connect case which comes to find its place on the back of the foot of the TV or further, in a piece of furniture for example. Depending on the installation we plan to make, the 20 cm cable will be used between the One Connect case and the owner connector on the back of the TV, or the 2.4 m cord. It is exactly the same principle as on the previous generation.

The screen is kept perfectly stable thanks to a central foot made up of three elements to assemble. Once mounted, the foot allows you to raise the 6.5 cm screen exactly, but a 7 cm sound bar is not a problem to be placed in front. The finest can even slip slightly below to be on the same plane as the slab. As on the previous model, the foot is 36 cm wide for 30 cm deep. It is in the central position, which allows you to install the TV on a relatively large furniture.

Samsung qe65qn800b (2022) connectors

As mentioned above, all connectors are brought together within the One Connect case. There is an Ethernet port, an audio optical outlet, two satellite entrances, an antenna input, a PCMCIA port, three USB-A sockets and four HDMI 2 inputs 2.1 of which is compatible with EARC for audio return to a sound bar or amplifier. Also note the presence of the owner connector to connect the One Connect case to the TV. We can count on the EARC functions, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and Allm (Auto Low Latency Mode) On HDMI sockets as well as the management of Ultra HD 4K signals at 120 images per second or Ultra HD 8K at 60 images per second with a speed up to 40 Gbit/s.

Little reminder, do not forget to open HDMI ports from the parameters by adjusting the input signal to the mode Extended, Because otherwise, they will not be able to exploit all their potential. All the sockets can be hidden by a plastic plate that covers connectors and organize the cables for a leak towards the rear of the furniture. Note that the TV is Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth compatible. We can count on the presence of Google, Alexa and that of Samsung assistants, Bixby. The system is AirPlay 2 compatible for Apple devices.

Samsung qe65qn800b (2022) image, mastered backlight despite a very high light

The Samsung Qe65qn800B TV has a VA LCD slab (Vertical alignment) 10 bits 100/120 Hz displaying an Ultra HD 8K definition (7680 x 4320 pixels) with a mini-Led backlight system. There are 1,300 mini-LED zones spread over the entire screen surface.

Mini-LED technology provides much smaller (around 40x lesser) light sources than conventional LEDs which makes it possible to obtain more control over areas and limit the effects of blooming that affect LCD TV, Conversely OLED TVs totally free from this halo problem around the brightest areas of the image on dark bottoms. It is clear that the blooming is particularly controlled here, which is not the case on the Sony Z9K, also an ultra HD 8K model using the Mini-LED.

The video sequences that we submitted to the TV fully satisfied us at this level. The light areas are not surrounded by halos, but offer relatively clear contours between the clear and dark parts. It’s not perfect either, but the effect is limited. However, the blooming is still very present on the different menus and around the options of the navigation bars when reading a media, which is always a bit annoying.

The slab incorporates a rather efficient anti -reflective filter which limits the reflections of the light sources which can be in the room or coming from windows. However, he cannot fight against a large picture window in front of the TV.

With a TNT source, this television offers a licked and fairly smoky scaling. There is a good exploitation of the millions of pixels present on the slab and we are entitled to extremely few staircase effects. We have not noticed a intertwining problem as it was the case on the Sony Z9K.

The compensation of the movements is perfect here, without any dropout, which is a very good thing. It is also valid for other types of content such as sports shows, for example. In this case, the image turns out to be precise. Good thing, are not many modes of image, which avoids losing the user. There are dynamic, standard, cinema and filmmaker modes. The standard mode makes it possible to obtain somewhat dark images compared to other modes, but offers a well marked contrast with bright and pleasant colors. This is a little less the case with the activated filmmaker mode which favors more natural colors, but less vibrant and less marked with contrast.

There are different possible contrast levels on this television. With the Local Dimming Low Dimming function, we noted a contrast rate of 1847: 1 and with the standard level, this rate rises to 7040: 1, always native which is excellent, almost as much as the TCL 65C935 on which We have measured a contrast rate of 7519: 1 under similar conditions.

With SDR content, it is the FilmMaker mode which offers the best results since we have measured just colored fidelity with a medium delta e of 2.96 which remains below the threshold of 3, under which the human eye can no longer make the difference between the requested color and that displayed. More demanding people will be able to change some details in the image settings to obtain greater color fidelity. The average gamma was noted at 2.42, which is extremely close to the target value of 2.4. To not spoil anything, the TV offers very great precision in monitoring reference values on the gray scale. The average color temperature has been measured at 6853 K, a result greater than the target value of 6,500 k, therefore producing images a little too cold compared to the expected rendering. Rec709 colorimetric space cover is 99.3 %, which is excellent.

With HDR content and an ultra HD definition, the television produces magnificent, very contrasting images, as we have seen on the documentary National parks: these wonders of the world. Next to the Philips 65Oled937 TV, an OLED model tested simultaneously, it is not always easy to make the difference between the blacks offered on one and the other. The image benefits from an excellent level of details, but Philips TV is distinguished all the same by producing certain areas with more precision than on the Samsung TV, however with an ultra HD 8K slab. It must be said that rendering with mode Home cinema From Philips 65led937 is extremely efficient and impressive, revealing unsuspected details on the image.

When watching the series The Lord of the Rings: the rings of power, Broadcast on Prime Video, the image seems less contrasted than on the Philips which offers deeper blacks. Let us recall that in this case, the Samsung TV offers classic HDR against the Dolby Vision dynamic, a format still not supported by the televisions of the South Korean brand. This model supports HLG, HDR10 and HDR10 formats+. Still on the same series, the colors are less vivid on the QN800B screen than on the Philips 65led937, imprints of a slight veil.

The Samsung Qn800b TV has perfect compensation for movements, whatever the content. For example, on our stallion film Gemini man (UHD with a video flow at 80 Mbit/s), the rendering is magnificent, the television missing absolutely nothing of the action or the smallest details, as fine as they. The colors of the skins are magnificent even if the final result, always compared to the Philips Oled937, is better on the latter thanks to its deeper level of contrast. On the explosion scenes, the Samsung TV lights up any average room, which is a little less than the case on the Philips model.

With HDR content, it is also the Filmmaker image mode that provides the best results in the cardboard calibration. Indeed, we were able to measure an average delta e of 2.15, remaining less than 3, but which can be optimized for the most demanding. Still in filmmaker mode, we have noted a brightness peak of 1620 cd/m² on a target at 10 % of the total surface of the display, against 1390 CD/m² for the previous generation, under the same conditions. The curve shows a very slightly greater light than it should be between 50 % and 70 % of the gray scale. In full screen, the TV keeps a fairly high level of brightness since we measured it at 584 CD/m² which is important.

Samsung qe65qn800b (2022) gaming: it’s all good, but still without Dolby Vision

The QE65QN800B TV has 4 HDMI 2 inputs.1. They support the optimized display technologies for video games, including the allm and the VRR also accepting the G-Sync and Freesync Premium signals if there is a link with a gaming PC or a game console. Note the compatibility with the standard of the HGIG group for HDR images management.

The game mode automatically activates the reduction in the delay in the display. We were able to raise a Input Lag Only 9.7 ms, which is excellent, close to the best in this area of Panasonic TV with a period of 9.3 ms, such as the TCL 55C635, followed by the latest TV LG C1, G1, C2, G2 and Samsung S95B, for example. This delay represents less than a shift image between the moment when the player presses the controller button and the action takes place on the screen.

As on the other recent TVs of the brand, we can display a play bar containing indications on the various active parameters and, if necessary, access some settings, including the image format for example. Please note, as usual at Samsung, color loyalty is not really there in game mode since we are entitled to fairly flashy colors that are pleasant, but not very natural. This has also verified during our measures since we noted an average delta e of 7.31 which is clearly higher than the threshold of 3. With this, the Samsung Qe65qn800B TV turns out to be a very good companion for video games, whether you play regularly or occasionally, it will always answer present.
