Intended to succeed the Prius 3, the Toyota Prius 4 has been marketed since the first quarter of 2016 and the end of 2018 in a restyled version.
The design of the Toyota Prius 4
Directly inspired by Mirai, the design of the Toyota Prius 4 has changed widely compared to the previous generation with a fairly divisive result: we like it or hate ! For Toyota, it is a question of achieving the market with a new design which allows the sedan to distinguish itself from an increasingly important competing offer. In 2018, a restyling came to simplify the style of headlights and rear lights.
On the dimensions side, the Toyota Prius 4 is a little more imposing than its big sister. It gains 6 cm in length (4.54 m) and 2 cm more in width (1.76 m). On the other hand, the sedan loses 2 cm in height (1.47 m).
In terms of habitability, note that Toyota has managed to resize his battery to be able to integrate it under the rear seats. The Prius 4 is also the first generation of the hybrid sedan to be able to tow a trailer with an authorized maximum weight of 725 kilos.
Hybrid system and performance
Less powerful than the previous version, the Toyota Prius 4 displays a cumulative power of 122 horsepower (136 hp for the Prius 3). Under the hood, its engine consists of a 1 petrol engine 1.8 L atkinson cycle of 9 horsepower coupled with an electric motor of 72 horsepower powered by a Ni-MH battery housed under the rear seats.
In terms of performance, the Toyota Prius 4 announces a 0 to 100 km/h crossed in 10.6 second while its top speed amounts to 180 km/h.
It should be noted that Toyota also offers lithium battery and all-wheel drive in Japan and the United States. Europe is unfortunately not concerned.
Consumption
According to the European cycle, the sedan displays a consumption of 3.0 to 3.3 l/100 km depending on the size of chosen rims (15 or 17 inches). It is a very clear progression compared to the Prius 3 (3.9 l/100 km).
To improve the performance of its hybrid sedan, Toyota has notably optimized the yield of its heat engine, now raised to 40 %.
