A16 Bionic: Everything is in the Bionic ..

The GPU part is still based on five hearts, which have the main advantage of accessing a 50% wider memory bandwidth. Finally, the Neural Engine still has 16 hearts, and is given to be 7% faster, which is good news, because it is responsible for an increasingly substantial part of the new functions of iOS 16. In particular all those affecting photography, management of cuttings, depth of field, including the superposition of several shots in one to avoid too blocked areas. He can also count on the new image processor (ISP) that Apple has slipped inside the iPhone 14 Pro.

Anyway, let’s go briefly on the pure performance part. For what ? Because for a long time now, the iPhone has offered the necessary power for the most common uses, and even for the demanding professional applications available on the App Store. Not to mention the games. The control that Apple keeps on its ecosystem allows it to avoid failures. And as long as, for example, Ray Tracing will not land on mobile taking its heavy dimensions from graphic fleas, it will not necessarily participate in the race for power.

Anyway, with a tool like Geekbench 5, we see that the iPhone 14 Pro is between 9.5 and 11% more efficient than its elder. For a generational leap, it is completely honorable. Especially since when you turn to Geekbench ML, which estimates the performance of the processor, the GPU and the neural Engine for calculations linked to machine learning algorithms, we see greater progress. When we request the GPU part, there is an increase of almost 13%, and when it is the neural Engine who is responsible for calculations, it is almost 18.5% better than we note between the last two generations of ‘iPhone.

Apple therefore continues to dig the furrow of artificial intelligence executed on the device to enrich our daily experience. And one of the major points of progression is obviously the photo ..

The photo, a giant step, but still on the way

Like every year, we prepare you a test dedicated to the photo part of the iPhone Pro. However, we give you our first impressions and remarks, which we will then deepen.

The first good news of this 2022 edition is that Apple does not create a distinction between the two high -end models. They both embark the same three rear photo modules – and even a TrueDepth on the front that improves, captures more light and benefits from a self -tackle for the first time. Which will allow you to make selfies with your friends or family faster and with less blurred shots.

But let’s mainly be interested in the three rear modules. Because this is the big thing about the novelty. Apple continues to offer an ultra-angle, a large angle and a telephoto lens. But, many things change. Quickly list the material new features. First of all, if the Ultra Grand Angle retains a focal length equivalent to a 13 mm, a new 12 Mpix sensor is associated with it, almost twice as large as that of the iPhone 13 Pro. It means that he will capture more light, and we know that this is where many are playing. But it is the Grand Angle, the main module, which tumbles this year. Goodbye the 12 Mpix sensor present from the iPhone X: Apple has chosen a 48 Mpix sensor coupled with a 24 mm optics, against 26 previously. It will be possible to shoot in 48 Mpix in Proraw format, or count on the quad-pixel to obtain more detailed shots, with more dive and better rendering, even in low light.

The arrival of this 48 Mpix sensor also allows Apple to do a little sleight of hand and offer four zoom levels by retailing 12 Mpix in the center of the sensor. Thus, in addition to magnification x0.5 (13 mm/ultra large angle), x1 (24 mm/grand angle) and x3 (77 mm/telephoto), there is an X2 (48 mm), cut for portraits !

This is all the more good news that in our eyes the telephoto lens, presented as the ideal module for portraits, is not convincing. This 77 mm is always a bit of the lame duck of the Apple photo proposition. Not in the shots he produces, but indeed in his focal length, which does not offer sufficient zoom power to really be useful in most cases.

Be that as it may, in addition to all these material advances, Apple also introduced a photonic engine, which opens the door to computational photography even more. This software approach, which manages technologies as Deep Fusion, Based on the performance of the ISP and the neural engine to treat the shots before compression.

What does it give on a daily basis ? In full light, mainly on the 48 Mpix module, but on others too, there is a better dive, more definition and less of these flat “watercolor” which make us push high cries for several generations of iPhone.
The textures of the surfaces are also better rendered, everything is no longer smooth and united, we see better the grain of the wood, the tiny cells of a tarpaulin, the small fine lines and ribs of a sheet. The surfaces are more frankly delimited, while retaining beautiful contrasts and a beautiful homogeneous, quality exhibition on all photo modules. The colors are also good, even if we found, especially at the end of the day, a slight tendency to pull towards golden yellow in the rendering of the lights.

A trend that we also see, especially with the main sensor, for night photos. With its new 48 Mpixel sensor, Apple manages to identify areas that remain in the dark with the iPhone 13 Pro, but the light is a bit yellowish. On the other hand, we can produce good night shots, which succeed in making the lights of the city well, while revealing some stars in the sky.

For portraits, we will also appreciate that the main sensor (either in 24 mm, or in 48) makes it possible to gain precision in the rendering of the hair, the locks are no longer united waves, but swell with details, rebellious hair. Portraits gain alive.

The iPhone comes back to the top ? We would have liked to say yes, but this is unfortunately not the case. Yes, the progress of this pro 2022 generation is substantial and really appreciable. Nevertheless, the iPhone 14 Pro – just like the Pro Max – cannot yet catch up with the considerable advance taken by Chinese actors like Huawei, Honor and even sometimes Xiaomi. Apple still retains the hand in certain areas. It is notably always, in our eyes, the king of autofocus. Which allows you to take photos quickly and with the least vague subjects or failed framing. It is also always very strong in video, where stabilization is always exceptionally good. Moreover, the action mode is progress in this direction, and will make the lives of parents who run next to their toddler to immortalize the first almost autonomous pedal strokes … We obviously imagine some other cases where this function will be useful.

Ultimately, if everything is not there yet, the iPhone 14 Pro is clearly, in our eyes, the best in photo. Which is generational obvious, but is also the fruit of work and steps in front. Which does not happen every year. We hope that it was only the beginning and that Apple will continue to seriously develop its photo offer, whether in a material or software.

Exceptional autonomy

It is understood, in the family of iPhone Pro, the most enduring is always the pro max model. Like what, even with a larger screen, the battery difference (about 1,100 mAh) allows you to really last longer ..

In this case, the iPhone 14 Pro succeeds in keeping 7:28 p.m., in progress of ten minutes, during our versatile autonomy test, which simulates a sustained sequence of daily uses. For the video streaming part, the performances are a little less good, but remain excellent and up 17 minutes. One could point the finger that progress is not crazy in view of the gain in battery capacity, but let’s not be sorrow. The iPhone 14 Pro is a great success. What is the design of iPhone 14 Pro ?

When we discover theiPhone 14 Pro For the first time and if we are not paying attention to the photo block or the Dynamic Island, it feels like having an iPhone 13 pro in hand. If Apple has changed the colors, there is an excellent finish that always forces respect. In terms of size, the iPhone 14 Pro are similar to iPhone 13 Pro, even if the weights betray a small overweight that makes the iPhone 14 Pro Max is always heavy in a pocket of pants. This year, Apple has kept the same design for its photo block but by offering a new larger sensor, in size and resolution, the objectives are slightly larger. On an iPhone 14 pro, the objectives are somewhat disproportionate. In any case, we find this design inspired by the iPhone 5 lights, a frosted glass back (shiny on the iPhone 14) of the most beautiful effect and a chromed metal outline (aluminum brushed on iPhone 14). The association of the two is very successful, especially on the sidereal black version and the intense purple version. On the first, black is more intense while on the second, purple offers variations in shades depending on the sources of lights. We love.

With a weight of 206g and its volume, we end up with a fair footprint which allows an excellent grip of the iPhone 14 Pro. This is the one we prefer. On the other hand, with its size and a weight of 240 g, the iPhone 14 Pro Max remains a heavy smartphone, especially when you know that the iPad Mini is only 293 g. Indeed, with however only 16g more than the iPhone 12 Pro Max and 2 g more than the iPhone 13 Pro Max, we feel a real difference in hand and especially in a pocket of pants. So, if this is where your smartphone is found most of the time, we can only advise you to take it in hand before passing the course.

On the back, there is a photo block made up of three cameras. And as we said above, we will especially notice impressive goods objectives on the new iPhone 14 Pro. Besides, just compare the iPhone 14 Pro to the iPhone 13 Pro to see the difference in terms of objectives ! On the front, it has not gone unnoticed, the iPhone 14 Pro no longer offer notches but a punch in the pill -shaped screen. We obviously find an OLED screen which has been a standard at Apple for a few years. But this year, Apple offers an even brighter screen and it’s impressive. In strong light condition, the iPhone 14 Pro will not be lacking. We obviously find of the Super Reti XDR, a protective layer in Ceramic Shield, still this 19.5 format: 9, True Tone technology, haptic return and especially promotion technology with an adaptive refresh rate up to 120 Hz who has taken so much time to come on Apple smartphones and which is now an obligation on a premium smartphone.

If we put the screen even aside, the big novelty from the iPhone X, it is that Apple has finally decided to abandon the notch for a punch. Last year, the notch of the iPhone 13 Pro was already smaller but in use, it was not necessarily seen. This year, this is a pill -shaped punch, as we had already seen on Android smartphones at Huawei or Honor. This form of pill is not trivial and it is justified because the punch not only integrates the camera before the iPhone 14 pro but also 3D facial recognition, Face Id.
