LED technology

“LED” is an abbreviation for ” Light Emitting Diode Which represents an electronic component. It has the particularity of diffusing light from the moment it is powered by an electric current.

Classic “LED” screens have a technology operating with a combined neon backlight system. But today, the neon tubes (CCFL) are substituted by electroluminescent diodes. We also find these LED diodes not only in screens but also in public lighting.

LED advantages for the LCD screen

LED technology of interactive screens has several interests

The LED screen is an LCD screen that uses more homogeneous LCD slab backlighting technology. Its system works similarly to that of conventional LCDs but remains closely different to plasma technology. It consumes less than 40% energy without harming the resolution of the image and the brightness of the monitor. Otherwise, its contrast rate is higher and it displays black blacks.

There are several types of LED technologies. First, Edge LED technology with its diodes located on the edge of the LCD slab. It allows you to gain thickness in order to acquire finer screens, less than 3 centimeters. Second, Full LED technology whose diodes are exposed on the entire surface of the LCD slab. For certain ranges, these different technologies benefit in addition to “local dimming”

The different LED technologies

  • LCD EDGE LED flat screen

With this screen, LED diodes are established on the whole edge of the LCD slab. Light reflectors also give a diffusion of LED light on the entire LCD slab.

  • FULL LED or Direct LED Flat Screen

The distribution of LEDs of Full LED or Direct LED type are already used by several televisions. Here, LED diodes for backlighting that are hidden at the back of the LCD slab completely cover the screen. Thus, we have a more homogeneous backlight than the previous technology. Only drawback, the thickness of the screen will be larger.

In addition, the screens that use the three LEDs (RGB: red, green, and blue) benefit from a better adjustment of the colorimetry.

  • LCD Full LED + Local Dimming Screens

Each LED diode has an artificial intelligence that allows it to light and extinguish itself automatically, for example, in the case of a strong or low light of the scene.

Compared to traditional LCD screens, the start of areas is more active and blacks are even more intense. We can even say that this technology is equivalent to that of plasma screens because it offers excellent rendering.

  • LCD EDGE LED + Local Dimming Screens

The EDGE LED technology LCD screen has the same assets of “local dimming” in terms of image quality and screen delicacy.

LED advantages for flat screens

The 2 advantages of LED technology for flat screens are:

– The energy consumption of LCDs with LED backlight is low, up to 40 % less than the classic LCD screen. These screens absorb less energy than light bulbs. However, it is necessary to learn about product sheets to assess the consumption of screens. It will be designated in watts for normal use but also in standby mode.

– With the high number of LED diodes, the uniformity of the backlight is more successful. The percentage of contrast considered on LED screens is almost the same with that of plasma screens. In addition, the image on the flat screen will appear more lively thanks to the evolution of the contrast and we will see deep blacks during dark sequences.

LED comparison with other flat screens technologies

Compared to other technology, LED technology in interactive screens has several advantages

First, compare the neon lights of standard LCDs with LED diodes of LED televisions. These are LCD screens of an unprecedented category. The 4 tubes located at the rear of the LCD slab are followed by LED diodes. They promise a more powerful backlight. However, a light change in accordance with the screen area can be caused by the use of tubes.

Now compare LED screens with plasma technology. The latter is really different from the LCD because it does not use liquid crystals but self -propelled gas cells allowing the lighting of several pixels (more than two million pixels) of the plasma slab. In contrast to the LCD, plasma does not need the backlight system connected to the slab. On the other hand, a plasma screen absorbs more energy compared to an LCD with LED backlight.

Finally, let us determine the differences between LED and OLED technology. OLED does not require backlight because it is from the organic matter that images form. In addition, it requires little material for the creation of a television and little energy for the issue of images. Red, green and blue diodes diffuse their own light, they constitute transformed sub-pixels. This technology is very advantageous for the creation of flexible screens with a contrast and a good category of original image. On the other hand, it is not yet available to large screens but only on the outskirts such as smartphones or MP3 / MP4 players.

            A little history:

            LEDs have existed for over 100 years

            1955: Rubin Braunstein discovers the infrared program of the Gallium (GAAS) and

            Unlike other countries such as the United States, China, Germany, Italy, … France is slow to equip itself, but demand is now becoming exponential. We catch up.

            The composition of an LED lamp

            An LED lamp is mainly made up of 3 elements:
            • The light source of different technologies and performance.
            • the radiator which is in charge of dissipating the thermal energy released by the light source.
            • The driver (or power supply) which transforms the current (alternative or continuous) necessary for the operation of the light source.

            The light source can be different technology:

            PTH: Pin Through Hole
            HPL: High Power LED
            SMD: Mounted Device surface or CMS (component mounted on the surface)
            COB: Chip on Board

            The technology will be chosen according to the sought -after light features.

            • PTH, which have been designed for signaling, are still sold in merchant sites or some distributors with poor performance which contributes to conveying the false idea that LEDs do not light up . Direct LED has not selected this technology for lighting.
            • HPLs will be chosen for light accentuations.
            • SMDs are particularly suitable for a good light distribution.
            • COB, the latest technology, will be preferred on strong powers with large lighting angles. Through lenses it is also possible to reduce the shedding angles.

            Direct LED only uses HPL, SMD or COB LEDs to guarantee customers quality and high performance lighting.

            THE Radiator is very important because it will depend on the cooling of the LED. Some poorly informed manufacturers think they are saving money by underdimensing the radiators with the consequence of a high rise in the operating temperature of the lamp and therefore a reduction in its lifespan.
            In addition, extract the maximum heat from the heart of the LED preserves its optical performance as long as possible; It is an essential notion.
            A good LED lamp does not heat up to more than 20 ° above the room temperature !!

            Direct LED tests in the laboratory This characteristic (among others) before deciding to integrate an LED source in its catalog.

            THE Driver is the most sensitive element of a light light source. It is indeed “the weak link” in the quality chain of an LED lamp. A good driver is recognized by the measurement of the Cos Phi of a light source. The closer the cos phi, the more quality the driver, the more the LED lamp will have a long lifespan.

            Direct LED chooses its drivers according to this criterion and whenever possible (integration problem) we choose our drivers from the 3 best manufacturers in the world.

            You have understood, one LED lamp is not worth another LED lamp !
            Analysis of a good LED lamp goes beyond appearances.
            Compare 2 LED lamps with their appearance or power amounts to comparing 2 vehicles based on their displacement without taking into account performance, handling, reliability, results of crash tests etc … !

            Sustainable

            Indeed a light source with good quality LEDs to a lifespan up to 25 times greater than a traditional lamp according to its technology.

            For example :
            A dichroic spot is given for 2000 hours against 30,000 to 50,000 hours for a LED spot
            A halogen bulb is given for 1000 hours against 30,000 to 50,000 hours for a led bulb
            A fluorescent tube is given for 6,000 to 8,000 hours against 50,000 to 80,000 hours for a LED tube

            The cost of purchasing an LED lamp is more high than a traditional lamp

            Should we stop at the concept of purchase cost ?
            We used to replace a traditional lamp by considering that its cost is relatively low but first forgetting that its consumption is 4 to 10 times greater than that of an LED lamp and then that its lifespan is from 4 to 25 times lower than that of an LED lamp.
            The cost of the electric KWH continuing to increase and similarly for the workouts, the concept of time of return on investment becomes preponderant.
            As an example, in professional use (8h/d and 5d/SEM):
            A fluorescent tube, which is already a very economical process, replaced by a LED tube will have a time of return on investment of around 2.5 years .
