The two Volvo C40 and XC40 recharging electric SUVs benefit from a software update, but go from a propulsion traction mode. Autonomy and load speed have also been revised upwards. For the occasion, we tested the C40 coupe on Swedish roads.

Presentation

In the old vintage, the Volvo C40 and XC40 recharging were offered in two -wheel drive version with the electric motor (231 hp) positioned on the front axle. The battery signed CATL, with a capacity of 69 kWh, offered autonomy between 425 and 438 km (C40). The load speed was 150 kW (DC).

The four -wheel drive version, called Twin recharging, was more powerful with two electric motors developing 408 hp. The powertrain was powered by an LG Chem battery with a capacity of 78 kWh. Autonomies were 438 (XC40) and 451 km (C40), the load speed being identical respectively.

For its 2024 vintage, Volvo Cars (ownership of the Geely group) revised the layout of its engines on its 100 % electric models: the Volvo C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge.

From now on, there is a third finish called Extended Range refill, positioned between the charging version and the Twin recharging. She sees her battery (CATL) increase to 82 kWh, while the charging speed is now 200 kW. Autonomies (WLTP mixed cycles) jump to 537 (XC40) and 550 km (C40), while average consumption go from 20-21 kWh/100 km to 17.4-17.6 kWh/100 km.

But the bulk of the change concerns the first two versions, the only electric motor of which now finds its place on the rear axle (RWD). This is quite new in Volvo, whose last propulsions dated from 1998.

Added to this is a power that goes from 231 to 238 hp for recharging, against 252 hp for the Extended Range recharge. On the battery shutter, the recharge changes supplier with LG Chem. The capacity of 69 kWh and the load speed of 150 kW remain identical. On the other hand, the autonomy is increasing (467 and 477 km) and the charging time (DC 10 to 80 %) goes from 28 to 34 min.

The Extended Range recharge, our test version with the C40, has an 82 kWh battery (CATL) for autonomies from 573 to 582 km (C40), as well as a load speed up to 200 kW ( 28 min for the passage from 10 to 80 % in DC). Average consumption is 16.3 kWh/100 km for the C40, against 16.7 kWh/100 km for the XC40.

This transition to propulsion does not change the use of the CMA platform (Compact Modular Architecture). On the other hand, this new architecture allows more couple, without harming the handling, quite the contrary.

Available from May 2024, the C40 Extended Range Recharge begins from € 55,500 up to € 63,400. The XC40 Extended Range recharge is a little cheaper with rates varying from 53,550 to 62,400 €.

The C40 REPHRAGE EXPENDED RAGE has not many people in front of it. We can cite the Audi Q4 40 e-tron sportback (204 hp), displayed from € 55,000 and whose autonomy is 541 km. Otherwise, there is the Ogre Tesla and its Model Y, whose autonomy is only 455 km, but marketed at € 40,990, bonus deduces.

Ergonomics and design

Apart from a software and hardware update, the Volvo C40 coupe SUV and the XC40 do not change from aesthetic point of view. The only two coquetries to put on their credit are new colors and 19 or 20 inch rims.

Our Volvo C40 test displays 4.44 m in length, a width of 1.873 m (excluding mirrors, 2.034 m with) for a height of 1.591 m. The wheelbase of 2.702 m augurs a beautiful habitability. As for the weight of the vehicle, it is 2.095 t.

The C40 REPHLAGE EXPENDED RAGENE retains a certain sobriety in its lines, and it takes a keen eye to know that this is an electric vehicle. Some clues such as the full grille, the absence of exhaust outlets, the recharging logo affixed to the rear trunk and the 19 -inch five -pointed alloy rims allow you to guess that the motorization is in no way thermal.

The Swedish coupe SUV claims its sporting side thanks to the ribbed engine hood and this famous grille. If the city of Gotham has its Bat-Signal, the Volvo C40 Recharging has the “Thor hammers”, composed of 84 LEDs and acting as headlights. Each of them adapts their harness according to the conditions of brightness and traffic, helped by the integrated camera.

Despite a common CMA (compact modular architecture) platform with the XC40, the C40 stands out for its famous “C” nomenclature dedicated to the coupes, such as the late C30 or the magnificent C70, materialized by a plunging roof line. This one is overlooked by a spoiler, which is reminiscent of the cat’s ears of the Peugeot 408.
