Samsung Galaxy S22 test

At the beginning of 2022, Samsung renews its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S22, which is still available in three versions: S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra.

Samsung praises the design of these models, with ultra-fine edges that circle a Dynamic Amoled 2x screen with display up to 120 Hz. That of the S22 measures 6.1 inch and displays a resolution of 1080 × 2340 pixels.

The smartphone works with the Android 12 operating system, an Exynos 2200 processor with 8 GB of RAM memory and 128 GB of internal memory without memory card reader. A 256 GB version is also available.

The smartphone has a double SIM card location, a fingerprint reader, a facial recognition system, a Type-C USB connector, a 3,700 mAh battery and 5G, Bluetooth 5 connections.2 with NFC and Wi-Fi 6.

Finally, it has a triple rear camera (12 + 10 + 50 mpixels), a 10 Mpixel front camera and can film in 8k (resolution 7680 × 4320 pixels).

Test of the Samsung Galaxy S22: an air of champion, but an autonomy that is problematic

Test of the Samsung Galaxy S22: an air of champion, but an autonomy that is problematic

If you are looking for a high -end smartphone that you can handle with one hand, the Galaxy S22 is a choice to consider. We tell you everything you need to know about the new flagship of Samsung:

Design: a style in continuity

Samsung no longer seeks to reinvent the concept of the mobile phone and its new Galaxy S22 is the most blatant proof of this. Its design is frankly classic and it takes up many elements of its predecessor Starting with its design.

Although it is not a carbon copy, the Galaxy S22 indeed presents strong resemblances to the Galaxy S21 that he replaces. On the menu, we have a edge to edge protected by a glass Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, a unibody aluminum chassis certified IP68 (that means that the phone is resistant to water and dust), a matt finish glass on the back and a photo module that marrys the contours.

Samsung has chosen to integrate A 6.1 inch screen (153.9 mm diagonal) which turns out to be a little smaller than that of the S21 (6.2 inches/158.4 mm diagonal), the phone is therefore rather compact with 146 x 70.6 x 7.6 mm, But strangely this is not really felt during the grip, because his back is not curved. For example, it is much more mastoc than a Google Pixel 5 with similar dimensions.

The different keys (power supply and volume) are located on the right edge of the device. They fall perfectly under the fingers. The lower part concentrates the USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port, the main speaker as well as the SIM cards drawer in nano format.

Note that it is not possible to extend the memory With a micro SD card, it will therefore be necessary to be satisfied with 128 GB original or opt for the 256 GB version which involves an extension of € 50.

Finally, The fingerprint reader is under the screen and it works perfection Without any delay, Samsung has really refined its technology.

We have tested the black version, but several colors are available

Screen: a (very) great success !

The screen Dynamic AMOLED 2X of the Galaxy S22 is a very great success : contrast, brightness, colorimetry, viewing angles … difficult to reproach him. It benefits in addition to LTPO technology which varies the rate of refreshment between 10 and 120 Hz to save the battery a little.

There FHD+ resolution (2,400 x 1,080 pixels/426 ppp) is more than enough for this screen size (6.1 inch), no pixel is visible to the naked eye, moreover in the range only the Galaxy S22 Ultra and its 6.8 -inch screen goes further with WQHD+ (3,200 x 1,440 pixels).

In any case, know that with a Brightness of 1,300 nits, The screen remains perfectly readable in all conditions. But its strength is also not to decline the images when the lighting is pushed to its maximum. It is nevertheless noted that there is a small discrimination with that of Galaxy S22+ whose brightness reaches 1750 nits.

Trick : To obtain the 1,300 nits indicated in the technical sheet, it is necessary to deactivate the adaptive brightness in the settings. You must then activate the option ” additional brightness Who appears in the menu (obviously, this consumes the battery more).

Interface: Android 12 with a touch of Samsung

The first days with the Galaxy S22 worried us somewhat: repeated bugs, blocking interface, slowness, screen that becomes black … The device was almost unusable. Fortunately, Samsung has deployed two important updates that came to correct most of the problems.

However, we also note network losses without being able to really explain it, and being tatillon we can also complain about small slowdowns in terms of animations or when you go a little quickly from one application to another, damage On a state -of -the -art device ..

The 4G+ connection is indicated, but no network ..

The phone operates on Android 12 with the ONE UI overlay in version 4.1. There are many options in particular to customize the interface.

The One UI 4 interface.1 from Samsung

There is no profound changes compared to previous versions of one ui. There are always some improbabilities such as applications that duplicate. Example: the photo gallery developed by Samsung and that of Google. Samsung’s Internet browser and Google’s … The Vocal Assistant of Samsung and that of Google, the Samsung application shop and that of Google, etc.

Audio: Samsung remains in the row

Samsung offers on his Galaxy S22 Stereo sound, The main speaker is located on the lower border while the second is positioned just above the screen and also serves as a headboard to make calls. As you can expect on a high -end device, the rendering is clean and is more than enough to listen to videos, podcasts and others ..

The S22 not having a 3.5 mm jack audio port, You will have to go through the USB-C port or via wireless connectors. It is also compatible with Bluetooth 5.2 and supports classic Flac, WAV, MP3 formats.

Performances: There is no shortage of resources

Samsung opted according to the geographical area for a snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or exynos 2200 chip:

The European market benefits from Exynos 2200 chip developed internally by the Korean manufacturer. The latter adopts an EUV 4 Nm engraving and is based on the OCTA-Core Arm V9 architecture (Cortex-X2 + Cortex-A710 + Cortex-A510).

Exynos 2200 obtained a score of 6,889 on Wild Life And 1940 with Wild Life Extreme, it is 16.5 % more efficient on 3D Mark than the exynos 2100 of the Galaxy S21.

The gain is 10% on PC Mark between the Exynos 2200 and the 2100

On Geekbench, the gain compared to exynos 2100 is 39% in single and only 2% in multi-core

Technical characteristics of the Exynos 2200 SOC:

  • CPU: Cortex-X2 at 2.8 GHz + Cortex-A710 at 2.52 GHz + Cortex-A510 at 1.82 GHz
  • GPU: Samsung Xclipse 920 to 1,300 MHz
  • RAM: LPDDR5
  • Storage: UFS 3.1

Regarding experience in games, the phone is doing well, even if it has tendency to heat up and can therefore run out of steam. Besides, the benchmark Wild life extreme stress test shows that since at the end of twenty sessions the scoring goes from 1940 points to 1152 points, a fall of 40% of performance.

Autonomy: the main weak point of this phone

Samsung has made the (questionable) choice to integrate a 3,700 mAh battery into its Galaxy S22 while its predecessor, which is not already a king of autonomy, has a battery of 4,080 mAh.

The result is final, The Galaxy S22 is not an enduring smartphone. It holds between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. with the screen on in conventional use (internet, social networks, calls, messages, photos), you will therefore have to recharge it at the start of the evening under penalty of being short of juice once At nightfall, which is frankly a shame for a new device at more than € 800. In addition, it does not catch up on rapid recharging since it is limited to 25W in wired (and 15W wireless), while some competitors offer 65W.

We must also specify that the software Ampere that we use to control the battery detects an effective capacity of 3,590 mAh, which is starting to do very little ..

Photo: Samsung masters his subject

For this new generation, Samsung has reinforced the photo part by opting for a module with three sensors: 50 MP + 12 MP (Ultra Grand Angle) + 10 MP (Telephoto with 3X optical zoom), Without forgetting the 10 Mp front camera.

It is a rather solid configuration especially since Samsung has good expertise in the processing of image and this is confirmed with very beautiful shots:

The sensor displays a high definition with beautiful details

The Galaxy S22 is a versatile photophone, it is doing very well even when the conditions are difficult in low light:

The 3X telephoto lens opens new possibilities:

The 10 MP front sensor has a mode brought with faces detection

And competition in all of this ?

Proposed to 909 euros When it is launched, the iPhone 13 is the main competitor of the Galaxy S22, especially that it is now found at a little more accessible price. On the Android side, we obviously think of the new Google Pixel 6 (649 euros) which does not lack arguments and has a much more affordable positioning.

Finally, given the little new features, it is always possible to turn to the Galaxy S21 from last year.

Conclusion

The most accessible of Galaxy S22 There is no shortage of arguments to argue with its very nice finish and its convincing photo module, but the autonomy is problematic To the point of wondering if it is not a shame to invest such an amount in a smartphone that does not last the day ..

The most affordable model of Samsung’s new S series, the Galaxy S22 is also the most compact version. This smartphone intends to offer a service equivalent to that of the Galaxy S22+, at the price, however, of some concessions.

Extremely disappointed with autonomy

On April 22, 2022 I have had it since February, I bought it by returning an S9. No problem with the recovery via the Samsung site.In terms of my equipment: Galaxy Buds 2, Galaxy Tab S7 Fe, Galaxy Watch 4. So I have the whole collection of this year, with all the most recent updates. So, this S22, I love its format, even if in the end it is the same size as my S9 (while everyone talks about a compact smartphone). It is very beautiful, light and holds well in hand. The interface I used to, and I really like. Fluidity, I discovered 120Hz, it’s nice but I could do without it. Especially with the little lags I meet, I don’t enjoy it so much..The connection between the devices begins to become interesting, the buds that switch all by itself between the phone and the tablet, the synchronization of the notes.. Even if it’s not always very effective, I really like these functions.Overall the phone pleases me a lot, the cameras are excellent, I really like using the zoom x3. The integration of functions such as night mode or the wide angle on applications like Snapchat or Instagram is a real plus, before only Apple had these privileges. (and again they do not have the wide angle) The big defect of this phone is its autonomy. I have to recharge it 3 times in the same day. Certainly I am a big user, but still, I expected much better. It is still the last phone of Samsung, a high -end. Leaving my S9 (which had disastrous autonomy) I expected a real. Read the full review
