Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Design: Like good wine, it is refined with age

As soon as we put our hands on this new Galaxy Z Fold 5 which he immediately appears to us more pleasant in hand than his predecessor. It’s a matter of details, but work on finesse, on weight, has borne fruit.

There is no doubt: we are in the presence of an ultra high -end smartphone. The reinforced aluminum frame with its almost flat slices is very pleasant to the touch. If Samsung has retired the photo blocks on many ranges, the latter is still very present on the Fold 5. Its integration remains classic, with the three modules stacked on each other.

Of course, the bulk of the efforts was put this year on the hinge in water. Its main interest is to allow the phone to be completely closed. There is little more pleasant feeling in terms of smartphone than hearing and feeling between your fingers the two parts of the fold close. The whole gives an impression of robustness, one can precisely choose the degree of inclination of the screen (within acceptable limits). In addition, Samsung has managed to keep the waterproofing on this hinge with an IP X8 certification.

In short, the impression of having a little gem in hand is there. There are still three small shadows on the board:

The concept also goes with some inherent defects. For example, I think of the front front screen which is still very narrow, especially to type on the keyboard. Or the internal screen which is not necessarily the most suitable for watching content designed for 16/9. We end up with very large borders at the top and bottom. Likewise, the smartphone is a bit thicker than the first come to the pocket. On this last point, it largely compensates by a contained width, which makes it possible to limit the place taken in the pocket.

To stay on my personal return to these two screens, the one on the front sometimes seemed to me a blurred hair on certain applications and a little narrow. It is clearly not a screen that can be used to watch videos in a comfortable manner. The internal screen for its part is a real wonder. With its 120 Hz, its shimmering colors, its display finesse, we really take your eyes. I often had the impression that the internal screen was more saturated than the external screen, but it remains very fine.

Let us add that the ratios of the two screens keep, in my eyes, a certain strangeness. The external screen is very narrow, which is especially annoying to type on the keyboard or to look at content. We then open the internal screen by unfolding it, but it keeps large black bars at the top and bottom. On the other hand, the internal screen is super practical for many tasks: display several apps at the same time, show photos in a large format to friends, use widgets. Playing on smartphone even becomes more pleasant due to a larger display area. In short, many uses arise from this choice which rather ends with a positive note therefore.

So let’s move on to screen measurements, made with our probe and the Calman Ultimate Displays software . Let’s start with the cover screen. In natural mode, the least saturated as possible, it displays an average delta e of 3.66 and 6.13 in HDR, when we aim in ideal 3 to have faithful colors (the higher the value, less It’s good). Even in this natural mode, the screen is still full of colors since it displays 107 % of DCI-P3. It’s impressive. Brightness rises to 1359 cd/m² according to our measurement.

For the large internal screen, natural, it is less flamboyant. We only go up to 69 % of the DCI-P3 and the Middle Delta is less good, 4.35. So let’s go in bright mode.
