Samsung Galaxy S20 test: an excellent limited endurance smartphone

So of course, like everyone else I read the tests (more or less “objectives” for some) I read the comments, I “take the pulse” from the market, I take my time to make a choice (if it is important ) But I never forget that I remain influenced for my own judgment, by my past, by my environment, by chance of the choices of reading comments, tests. by life in short.
I would like to be able to dismiss everything that is not objective but I do not believe it or more exactly, I no longer believe it.
I went through this reasoning hoping to reject everything that is subjective but I have come to the point of “seeing” or understanding that it is impossible. I know that I remain influenced and that I can’t do anything to escape it.
This does not mean that you should not do the maximum to repel the subjective, you have to try to stretch it knowing that it will remain an approximation, more or less close to a complete objectivity.

My opinion on the Galaxy S20 in 2021 in short

As soon as it leaves the box, the Galaxy S20 could easily pass for a 2021 smartphone. In March of last year, Samsung managed to put a modern smartphone on the market and, above all, timeless. The fine edges of the screen, the small hole for the camera, the high -quality Amoled screen and the cooling rate of 120 Hertz can still compete with the best smartphones a year later.

Androidpit Samsung S20 Front

The same goes for the camera that Samsung has not really changed on his successor. Anyway, the differences between the Galaxy S21 and the S20 (link to my complete comparison) are so minimal that I think there is much to say about the predecessor. Only the performance of the exynos 990 engraved in 7 nanometers play against the S20.

In return, you will even benefit from an advantage with the possibility of extending storage, if you do not opt for the latest Samsung smartphone. With us, in June 2021, the Galaxy S20 can buy for just under 650 euros.

The Galaxy S20 is therefore a very solid option, if you are currently looking for a high -end Samsung smartphone. However, remember that the Samsung four-year warranty for security updates also applies to the S20, but it was marketed last year. So on this point, the S21 series will be more sustainable.

Design and screen: a sober and always current look

When I wrote on the news of the S21 series in January 2021, the design was at the top of my list. Because in fact, Samsung was more daring in 2021 and opted for an interesting design for the photo module at the back. All Galaxy S21 models have a kind of dog ear that blends into the smartphone.

I loved:

  • Compact design thanks to the 6.2 inch screen
  • Fine screen edges and subtle notch.
  • The edges of the screen, very little curved, are elegant
  • Glass back

I did not like:

  • Globally boring design
  • The glass back seems a little hollow

On the back of the Galaxy S20, you will find a classic photo module. However, the dimensions of 151.7 x 69.1 x 7.9 millimeters are almost identical to those of S21. This is mainly due to the 6.2 -inch AMOLED screen with a hole that is present on the two devices. The S20 is a little lighter, with 163 grams.

Androidpit Samsung S20 Side

The Galaxy S20 also presents minimally rounded edges which a little changed the sensation when he holds it in hand. The old AMOLED screen also has the advantage of providing a maximum resolution of 3200 x 1440 pixels. Only, if you want to use the 120 Hertz, the resolution will be limited to FHD+ and will then be at the same level as the current Samsung smartphone.

If you don’t like polycarbonate backs, you should choose the S20. Yes, Samsung installs a glass back but in my opinion, it seems a little more hollow than the plastic back of the Galaxy S21.

Overall, the Galaxy S20 has surprisingly well aged. The screen is always one of the best you will find on the smartphones market, and the design of the smartphone is still current in 2021. I would easily dare to take the S20 without hesitation!

Performances: the exynos 990 still does the case

The Galaxy S20 is animated by a Samsung Exynos 990 SOC. The version with SOC Snapdragon has remained reserved for the United States and certain other markets in 2020. Samsung also teams the 8 GB smartphone from RAM and 128 GB of internal storage.

I loved:

  • Good performance in mobile games
  • Fluid Android experience
  • Compatibility with Wi-Fi 6

I did not like:

  • The absence of 5G (there is a more expensive 5G version).

With the Exynos 2100, Samsung launched a really powerful SoC in 2021. Under the competitive pressure exerted by Qualcomm with the Snapdragon 888, Samsung had to roll up their sleeves. They quickly copied the tri-cluster design and the engraving in 5 nanometers. In benchmarks and also in daily use, the SOC was very convincing.

Androidpit Samsung S20 Camera

The Galaxy S20 uses an older Soc, the Exynos 990, which is engraved in 7 nanometers. Besides, you can find out more about the Socs in our dedicated article that you can read by clicking here. Quite fundamentally, however, the exynos 990 works a little more ineffectively. However, as high -end smartphones are launched anyway with excess performance, the deficit is not so noticeable in my opinion.

For my test, I installed the mobile games PUGB Mobile and Call of Duty: Mobile on the Galaxy S20. The two games shone with the brevity of their loading times and their fluidity. But let’s look at the results of the benchmarks:

Samsung Galaxy S20 Portrait

Samsung has not upgraded the camera of the Galaxy S20 this year. You will find in the S21 the same configuration with three cameras as in the S20, and it is not such a bad thing. After all, the photos taken by the two models of smartphones are really to die for. And this despite that the alleged triple photo module cheating with an optical zoom of X1.1 and a digital zoom of X3.

Galaxy S20 camera configuration

Samsung Galaxy S20 Zoom

Many manufacturers are betting today on high -resolution sensors, and then compressing images via the Pixel Binning. That this does not necessarily bring an advantage, you can see it quite well in our blind photo test, in which the 12 Mp MP camera of the iPhone 12 Pro Max convinced especially in the photos at night.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Light

It is also laudable, in my opinion, that Samsung brings a large number of the new functions of the camera in the S21 series to the old models, and therefore to the S20. In addition to the Zoom X30 space, you can use the unique shooting function for 15 seconds, capture 8K images from videos or save videos with HDR10+. Only the director mode is not suitable for the SOC used and I did not find a portrait mode dedicated to the S20.

Speaking of video features: the S20 can film up to a maximum of 8K. As you can then move the large files on the microSD card, you will even benefit from an advantage compared to S21.

Samsung did not deliberately improve the camera of the S20 in his successor. The triple photo module always takes good photos and, according to some comments from the Nextpit community, it has still gained quality thanks to the software optimizations of 2021. Cool!

Autonomy: the Galaxy S20 is just what it takes

The Galaxy S20 has a 4,000 mAh battery which can be recharged with the 25 Watts charger included. You can also benefit from the wireless load of 15 watts and even an inverted wireless load of 4.5 watts.

I loved:

  • The Wireless Load and Wireless Load inverted.
  • Box contents

I did not like:

  • The battery too small with its 4000 mAh
  • The fairly slow fast load

There is no longer very often 4000 mAh battery in current smartphones. The trend is clearly more to those of more than 5000 mAh, which naturally guarantees greater autonomy. When David tested the Galaxy S20 in March 2020, the autonomy had convinced him.

With a permanent Wi-Fi connection and the cooling rate of 120 Hertz permanently activated, it easily managed to hold 1 and a half. It’s okay, but it depends strongly on your use. Samsung has not increased the capacity of the S21 battery and rapid charging technology remained the same.

Androidpit Samsung S20 USB

The maximum power is 25 watts, which is a delay compared to the competition which could interfere with some. Because even in the mid -range, there are now smartphones that you can load at 50 watts! A full load cycle with the Galaxy S20 took me just under an hour and a half. A load of 10 to 50 % took 40 minutes. It’s pretty long for a smartphone in 2021.

The support of the wireless load and the inverted wireless load is however appreciable for a flagship. If you reinvest the savings made with the purchase of the S20 in Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro for example, you can load the True Wireless intra-ear headphones via the smartphone.

With a battery of 4000 mAh, Samsung will not spread anyone in 2021. Nevertheless, autonomy can reach a day and a half, which does not constitute an obstacle too important for daily use. The fast load is faster at other manufacturers, but your battery will deteriorate faster after a few years of use.

I have it and it is really great, very beautiful screen, powerful but two things that I don’t like the saturated photo style, it’s beautiful but it moves away from reality and I don’t like That in a photo that I did not touch up. And the fact that he does not offer a jack makes me chi9r in view of my use -oriented use. I am waiting for the Xperia 1ii firm and replace it if it really is top, anyway at 90% I will replace it and tasted a little of the Sony smartphone

“After having used this device for more than a week and having also tested the Galaxy S20 Ultra model, I can say without risk that the smallest model in the range is absolutely the one to buy. The Ultra S20 is really not worth it “

This is an opinion that is worth what it is worth but which is contradicted by the reality of the market. Because the S20 and S20+ are not very sold, and only the Ultra S20 has managed to achieve and even exceed the objectives of Samsung in the first months of marketing.

Louis Hory Apr 29. 2020 Comment link

The reality of the market, we do not have to bow down before.
Personal appreciations are like taste and colors, each hers.

Pardayec Apr 29. 2020 Comment link

Your reasoning is a little weird. If everything is a question of personal appreciations, as much to choose your smartphone at random, without taking into account tests and lifts from the market, since everything is worth and everything is only Opt and personal taste.
Suffice to say that I do not share your point of view at all, especially when we talk about a device for which you have to pay 900 euros minimum.
It turns out that the Galaxy S20 has a big objective problem is that of its exynos 990, whose performance is disappointing and whose energy consumption is too high. Samsung is aware of this and two clues, which are objective facts, attest to this:
– First, the S20 was launched in South Korea in its Snapdragon 865 version. This is a first, because for previous generations, Samsung always launched the Exynos version of its standard carrier in its country of origin, in order to promote its homemade chip and the brand’s know-how sock.
– The Galaxy Note 20, planned as usual at the end of the year, will be released with a modified processor, the Exynos 992, which is precisely supposed to correct the problems of performance and overconsumption of energy of the 990. Samsung has insisted a lot on progress in the matter when the new SOC announces
The Ultra S20 has been added a 5000 mAh battery, which allows it to ensure it despite everything a autonomy worthy of its rank. This obviously helps to explain why he sold better despite his price.
I add that on the question of autonomy, the test proposed by Android Pit is rather surprising: “I imagine that the life of the battery will decrease a little when we can go out and move again. But I am ready to bet that she will hold a whole day without any problem. “I didn’t know that you could light up your readers by doing bets.
In short, it is not a question of prostrating yourself before the reality of the market, but of trying to understand why a product was a commercial failure before slamming 900 euros to buy it. But we can also buy blindly considering that everything that is said is only appreciation and personal taste. Not my cup of tea.

Louis Hory Apr 30. 2020 Comment link

Now that I think I understand you a little better, I am less surprised by your judgment concerning my reasoning.

I take back your words “if everything is a question of personal appreciations,”
This is where the origin of the mistake comes from. In “everything”.

When I say that personal appreciations vary from one person to another, I am not only talking about objective facts like those you relate and which are perfectly accurate (for what I know and you know more than I ) but also the needs of each (very variable from one person to another), personal assessments of individuals who want to establish their judgments according to their own experiences (like Luna with her phobia of small screens. ))
In short, ignore the personal appreciation whatever the origin by retaining only the simple facts purely objective seem to me insufficient to understand how everyone constitutes their own judgment.

“This is an opinion that is worth what it is worth but which is contradicted by the reality of the market.””

By this sentence (the one that made me react) you establish a value judgment between that of the editor and the “truth of the market”, it is your right to note this trait and to question it. But I do not believe in this absolute truth of the market, as if the “market” could not be mistaken because it determines the will or the general choice of economic actors.

A single example that can be multiplied in all sectors of the industry and in all times:
If German cars are deemed more reliable than French cars (if you are French or Japanese cars if you are Japanese. ) Established for many years by “serious” surveys, the statistics of automotive repairers are in contradiction with this assertion and the success of sales of these cars (objective) cannot be denied despite their significant additional costs (fact just as objective ))
[I could also have talked about historical facts such as the quality and solidity of German tanks during the Second World War but it is more a question of specialists.

So for me, the personal interpretation of buyers cannot be eliminated in the objective judgment they wish to establish.
Certainly and I agree with this point, we can or we should only stick to objective facts but the reality is quite different.

However, I will probably not have convinced you but, at least, I will have tried, this is my answer.

Samsung Galaxy S20 test: an excellent limited endurance smartphone

Writing note: 3 out of 5

The Samsung Galaxy S20 has arrived and stands out as a logical evolution of its predecessor, the Galaxy S10. To convince, the smallest smartphone in the family is based in particular on beautiful changes in photo.

Presentation

In this year 2020, the Galaxy S mobile family has been enriched with 3 new models. The Galaxy S20 and S20+ come to take the place of the S10 and S10+, while an ultra declination comes in reinforcement as a technological showcase. On the high -end segment, Samsung remains a reference. However, competition rages and the Galaxy S20 must face the Apple models on the one hand, including the iPhone 11, 11 pro and 11 pro max solidly installed, or those of Huawei, certainly loss of speed since the Embargo in the United States. On the other hand, they are Chinese actors who come to play the spoilsports in Samsung’s plans. Xiaomi, Oppo and OnePlus offer very interesting alternatives to Galaxy S20 at often lower prices.

The S20 is launched at € 909, the same price as the Galaxy S10 when it comes to its beginnings. A 5G variation of the S20 is also part of it, for an extension of € 100. The Samsung Galaxy S20 does enough to maintain this competition remotely ? Here is the response of our laboratory tests.

Writing note: 4 out of 5

Ergonomics and design

The Galaxy S10 was one of the most successful smartphones in 2019 and its successor took the same path in 2020. In a world where mobiles are constantly growing, the Galaxy S20 would almost impose itself as a compact model. Samsung has chosen to extend it to better refine it. The result is convincing since the phone is particularly pleasant in hand, even if the extension of the screen does not allow the thumb to reach its upper part obviously. However, the Samsung interface, onei 2.1, has been designed to bring as many things as possible as possible and the gesture navigation system is also a great help. On the other hand, the screen protection film creates an unfounding roughness when you slide your finger from the edge of the screen.

Contrary to what the figures suggest, the Galaxy S20 screen is not larger than that of S10. Admittedly, the first displays a 6.2 inch diagonal (15.75 cm) against 6.1 inches for the second, but the total surface of the screen remains very slightly higher on the S10. In any case, the screen always occupies a very important part of the front of the mobile. The borders remain particularly fine all around. Samsung has chosen to move the front photo module. The punch in the screen is now in the center, at the top of the display. A small enclave which is forgotten very quickly in use.

For S20 safety, a fingerprint reader is positioned under the screen. This device works without problem and quickly unlocks the phone. Samsung has abandoned its button dedicated to Bixby and relocates the locking and volume control keys on the right edge. The Samsung Galaxy S20 is able to accommodate 2 nano-sim cards or 1 nano-sim card and a microSD card. Note that mobile also has an ESIM location. A function still little exploited in France, but which is very practical in certain countries such as the United States.

Audio

Samsung has resisted as long as possible, but the mini-jack 3.5 mm intake ended up disappearing from the Galaxy S. The S20 is delivered without USB-C adapter, the quality of the audio output will therefore depend only on the Bluetooth device used.

The Galaxy S20 still has good stereo speakers, powerful and precise enough to appreciate an episode of its favorite series. Sound spatialization is excellent. We simply regret a highlighting a little too pronounced high mediums.

Screen

Introduced by the Galaxy S10, the Dynamic Amoled screen returns to the S20. The slab takes advantage of the advantages of the OLED, namely an excellent contrast and an imperceptible persistence. As we pointed out in a dedicated article, the only real defect in this screen lies in its protective film. The latter increases the light reflection rate, which thus reaches 53.7 %. A rather high score for a smartphone screen, but which is not really perceived in use as the slab is bright. Indeed, we have measured a peak exceeding 1,030 cd/m², one of the highest values of our comparison. At no time were we disturbed by the reflections on the S20 screen. And in complete darkness, minimum brightness (1.5 cd/m²) allows you to use the Galaxy S20 without being dazzled.

Samsung only offers two colorimetric profiles. The lively mode, active by default, gives a rendering as often far too saturated. For the best result, you have to choose the natural mode. With the latter, we measure a Delta E at 2.1, attesting to perfectly just colors. The temperature cannot be adjusted in this mode and reaches 6,760 k, slightly above the video standard (6,500 k).

Writing note: 5 out of 5

The Samsung Galaxy S20 slab displays a WQHD+ definition (3,200 x 1,440 pixels) which gives it an excellent resolution of 563 pp. By default, it nevertheless displays in Full HD+, for better energy performance. In the same way, the 120 Hz display is not chosen by default. This mode allows a more fluid rendering on the screen, as we explain in a devoted article. Insofar as these characteristics are highlighted in the communication of Samsung, we can be surprised not to see them exploited by default. It is not unrealistic to consider that many users will miss these adjustments. Anyway, we understand that Samsung chooses not to activate these features to preserve the battery of the Galaxy S20. But we will have the opportunity to come back to it at the end of the article.

Performance

Once again, European consumers must deal with Galaxy S20s with Exynos 990 SOC. In the rest of the world, the S20 is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SOC. Usually, the Samsung models in SOC Qualcomm display better performance and better autonomy than those in Soc Exynos. For the time being, we have no comparison and the Galaxy S20 has good performance on our protocols. With its 12 GB of RAM, the S20 is doing very well on our multitasking test by collecting an index of 97. This results in use by great fluidity in all cases.

On the other hand, the performance of the Mali-G77 MP11 graphic chip is not up to our expectations. Admittedly, the Galaxy S20 is doing honorably with an index of 81, but it is placed behind many competitors who are equipped with platforms from the previous year. Proof of this is the 107 index obtained by the Galaxy Z Flip, equipped with a Snapdragon 855+ SOC and which is to date the most efficient Samsung mobile according to our tests.

Our performance tests are carried out with aim, the application developed by the company Smartvis.

Photo

The Samsung Galaxy S20 has 3 photo modules on the back distributed as follows:

  • Grand-angle module: 12 megapixel sensor, stabilized optics equivalent 26 mm opening at f/1.7.
  • Ultra Grand Angle Module: 12 megapixel sensor, 13 mm equivalent optics opening at f/2.2.
  • Telephoto module: 64 megapixel sensor, 28 mm equivalent optics opening at f/2.

Main module

By default, the Samsung Galaxy S20 photographs at the Grand Angle using its 12 megapixel sensor. His shots are rich in detail and the accentuation of contrasts is used to a fair measure. One of its strengths lies in its ability to make colors rather neutral and natural shots.

In low light, the Samsung Galaxy S20 achieves a good performance also. The photos are detailed, the electronic noise is contained thanks to a mastered ISO climb. For once, Samsung does not abuse smoothing, a good progression in this area.

Ultra Grand Angle Module

The shots captured by the ultra-wide-angle module and its 12 megapixel sensor are rather good day. Accentuation remains acceptable and allows you to perceive a good amount of details. Compared to the Xiaomi Mi Note 10, the rendering of the Galaxy S20 is more neutral and pushes much less the saturation of the colors. Samsung offers by default a correction of geometry that it is possible to deactivate to find the usual barrel deformation effect.

In low light, the ISO climb causes the appearance of electronic noise that the Galaxy S20 tries to counter by applying visible smoothing. The level of detail therefore drops clearly, without the global exhibition of the scene being very satisfactory.

Telephoto module

For the zoom, the Galaxy S20 completely ignores a longer focal length perspective. The dedicated module is based here on a 64 megapixel sensor and an equivalent optics 28 mm. A focal length barely longer than that of the main module therefore. All zoom levels offered by the S20 are therefore purely digital. The mobile will each time make a cropping in the 64 megapixel sensor.

By default, when pressing the “Zoom” button, the S20 offers a 3X report. This gives a framing close to that offered by an optics equivalent to 80 mm. A focal length close to that of the telephoto module of a Huawei P30. By day, the rendering is quite good overall. Admittedly, the precision is not at its climax, but the entire shot is homogeneous, well exposed and rather natural.

In low light, the observation is very different since the rendering is rude. As often, digital zoom management becomes very complicated in low light, electronic noise being difficult to manage.

It is possible to vary the digital zoom on a beach up to 30x. The shots can remain usable as long as the brightness is sufficiently present up to 10x. Beyond that, the zoom is more from the gadget than a really practical tool.

Video: 8K for glory

The Samsung Galaxy S20 is the first smartphone to offer to record videos in 8K. However, this very high definition poses several problems. On the one hand, 8K content lacks interest at the moment in the absence of televisions or monitors displaying such a definition. We could then tell ourselves that the recording of so large files allows a comfortable crop in mounting software. Unfortunately, the rendering jerky at 30 i/s is not very convincing. In addition, still in 8K, the development does not very precisely follow the subjects.

We can only advise to choose the 4K 60 FPS option for video lovers. In this definition, the Galaxy S20 is brilliant: excellent fluidity, flawless self -tackle and perfect exposure measurement. It is simply one of the best efficient smartphones in 4K video that we have had the chance to test.

Front and single Take photo module

The front photo module is based on a 10 megapixel sensor and delivers very good shots. Once you get rid of so -called beauty filters, the photos are precise. The exhibition of faces is almost always fair and the counters are well managed.

Samsung has introduced a single Take -called function on its galaxy S20 which allows you to automatically capture shots and videos from all modules of the smartphone. After a few seconds, we then end up with a selection of the “best” elements of the sequence. An accelerated video, a loop video, a black and white photo. The user free to choose what he prefers among all that has been captured by the S20. In practice, we were not amazed by this function. It often happens that the system chooses an inexpensive moment for its video loop or a little relevant pose of the subject photographed.

Writing note: 2 out of 5

Autonomy

With a battery of 4000 mAh and the choice to operate only in Full HD and 60 Hz, we were waiting for a good autonomy performance on the part of the Samsung Galaxy S20. Unfortunately, it does even worse than its predecessor. By default (Full HD, 60 Hz), he only held 11 h 06 min on our smartvis test protocol. One of the lowest scores of our comparison. A result that falls below 10 hours if the 120 Hz option is activated. In practice, moderate use allows you to end your work day before you need to go through a recharge. If we shoot a little more on gourmet uses such as photo, video or game, it will often be necessary to recharge the S20 in the afternoon. A very disappointing result.

Samsung catches up somewhat by now providing a 25 W charger with its Galaxy S20. The latter allows you to recharge the smartphone battery in just over an hour.

Our battery tests are automated by target, the application developed by the company Smartvis.
The results obtained with target come from measurements made in real conditions of use (calls, SMS, videos, application launch, web navigation, etc.).

Sustainability

Our sustainability score makes it possible to determine the lasting aspect of the smartphone as much for the consumer as for the environment. It is based on the repairability index, sustainability criteria (protection index, standard connectors, warranty duration and updates. ) and an assessment of CSR policies (corporate social responsibility). You will find all the details of the analysis in our article presenting the sustainability score.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 is delivered under the Onei 2 interface.1, based on Android 10. At a time when we write these lines, the security update of March 2020 is well installed. Oneui takes up the Android navigation logic in broad outline. Always on Display, Samsung Pay, Bixby. The whole Samsung experience is back. The side screen is also there to access a selection of applications by sliding the right edge of the screen to the center. A function that compensates for the size of the large screen. Likewise, it is possible to activate the camera with a single double pressure on the lock button. Note that if Bixby automatically activates a long pressure on this same key, it is possible to turn off the smartphone instead.
