Test – Mercedes class at 250th, the perfect compromise?, Mercedes class A Hybrid rechargeable: price, autonomy, perfs

MERCEDES CLASS A

Taking advantage of the latest improvements in terms of cells and a free fall price, the rechargeable hybrid class will take a 15.6 kWh pack. The latter weighs 150 kg and is assembled by the accumotive subsidiary in Germany. This allows the two German compacts to have one of the best autonomies on the market.

Test – Mercedes class at 250th, the perfect compromise ?

Electrified models – whether hybrid, rechargeable or 100% electric hybrid – multiply in all manufacturers. Mercedes offers a new representative of the genre with a 250th version of class A. The compact with the star associates thermal and electricity to attract an even wider clientele. But is it really effective ?

Associate the best of both worlds. This is the philosophy of all rechargeable hybrid models. But the questions are always the same: is it justified in use ? The additional cost, the overweight and the decrease in space are worth it ? Remember that, as always, the interest of these vehicles obviously depends on the use of each.

At first glance, this class A 250th could stand out from the others, claiming an autonomy in 100% electric mode of 65 km. Let’s get to the heart of the matter: this new class A 250th accuses an overweight of more than 300 kilos compared to a class A 200 while the two cars share the same heat engine (1.680 kg in total). Namely a 1.3 -liter Essence of 160 horsepower Turbo’s four -cylinder. Here, Mercedes has added an electric motor of 102 horsepower powered by a 15.6 kWh battery. The whole claims a combined power of 218 horsepower and 450 Nm of maximum torque. Obviously, battery often rhymes with space less. However, it is housed under the rear seat but the double bottom of the trunk is condemned and thus made the volume pass to 310 liters (-60 liters). It is the high voltage system that takes this place.

Despite this decrease in the available space, the rechargeable hybrid class is rather that can be spaced since what takes up the most space – the batteries – is hidden in places that are usually not used. You will simply take less pasta packages when you go to ski, or find another place than in the double bottom of the trunk to transport them. On the other hand, if the habitability is not in trouble, the behavior of this hybrid version takes a hit !

Mercedes class at 250th

Slightly enhanced, class A 250th has a great advantage over its sisters: it passes the back of donkeys better !

Good to know: anticipate purchase and resale.

It is possible to know the resale or recovery value of your vehicle thanks to the Turbo auto rating of your Mercedes Class A, the alternative to the Argus coast.

Patarus but no serious !

Once the vacuum cleaner noise is put aside, the engine approval is largely correct. On the other hand, its dynamic behavior leaves something to be desired. The slightest turn taken a little dry pushes the car to widen its trajectory and take roll despite the firing suspensions. We were surprised the first time. The second, we request more brakes and too bad for platelets. Besides, we noticed the lack of progressiveness in the brake pedal which is delicate to tame, according to the state of load of the batteries (as on any hybrid, in fact). These observations are however predictable.

Between the batteries, the electric motor built in the 8 -speed gearbox and the boosted checkout height (2 cm more than a classic thermal engine class). There is something to explain this behavior decidedly far from sportiness. After all, it is not the philosophy of the car. Class A PHEV is there to allow the user to consume less fuel. And therefore to lower the average CO2 emission and allow the most annoyed A45S and A35 AMG to exist.

However, even if it is not its vocation, this class A 250th is doing well on the performance side. The 0 to 100 km/h is shot in 6.6 seconds and the maximum speed amounts to 235 km/h. Not bad for a compact sage !

Mercedes class at 250th

Aesthetically, nothing changes if not the 250th lettering at the back and the EQ Power badges on the wings.

Made for the city.

It is her favorite field and it is there that she will become interesting financially. His template appropriate for agglomerations and his ease of handling gives him two good points. Above all, its 100 % electric mode never allows you to trigger the heat engine for almost 60 km in town (over 65 km announced). If you add a little fast track in your trips, the battery does not fall as brutally as you might think. For example, we have traveled up to 54 km by alternating departmental, fast lane and even a little highway at 130 km/h.

To summarize these statements, understand that if you travel very few kilometers per week, you may well find your account. It is reassuring – and pleasant – to be able to drive without burn the slightest drop of essence, knowing that if by chance you came to the end of the capacity of the battery, the thermal block takes over.

As surprising as it may seem, it is precisely in this situation that we make the difference between several PHEV models. As long as you have the charge, their 100% electric autonomy is the only criterion to decide between them, or almost. But as soon as the heat engine is only found, it is the test of fire. Sometimes the latter turns out to be excessively greedy.
