Despite the arrival of Wear Os 3 and the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, Fossil seems to have been content to take out a connected watch resembling the previous models. However, the brand has innovated and launched a product that has the state -of -the -art sensors and is quick to use, while waiting to improve even more in the coming months, thanks to the arrival of a software update long -awaited. Let’s discover together what she has to offer.

Fossil Gen 6 Design

Before being a manufacturer of connected watches, Fossil remains above all a fashion brand, specialized in small leather goods, accessories and of course tocantes. As a result, the majority of manufacturer’s smartwatches look like traditional watches, which is also the case with Gen 6.

The latter is offered in two formats, adapting to different wrist sizes: a fairly feminine version offering a 42 mm case and an 18 mm bracelet, or a more imposing model, bringing the dimensions respectively to 44 and 22 mm. The two variants are themselves declined in several colors and materials. The 42 mm model is offered in golden and Gunmetal pink, both of stainless steel, as well as a purple version with a silicone bracelet. As for that of 44 mm, it is available in anthracite stainless steel, brown leather, coarse green leather camouflage and black silicone.

If despite these many choices the bracelets did not suit you, it will be easy for you to change them, since Fossil offers a wide range. Their format is also standard, thanks to the horns integrated into the case, allowing you to easily get others in trade and therefore maximize the possibilities of personalization.

On our stainless steel model, the materials seem to be of good quality and the overall watch finish is very good. The bracelet is however subject to a few scratches which appeared after a few days of port, which, although they remain discreet, is quite disappointing.

More generally, there are three buttons on all the right parts on the right part of the dial: a central crown allowing access to the menu, return to the main screen and scroll through the screen, as well as two configurable shortcuts. In the same way, the microphone and the speaker are hidden on the left edge of the device. However, the telescope is not rotating, this functionality being taken up by the central crown. Last important point: all models are “Waterproof” 3 ATM, providing them with splashing resistance, rainwater and perspiration. The Gen 6 is therefore perfectly usable during your training, but cannot be submerged during your swimming. Likewise, it is recommended to remove it when washing your hands, or at least not to pass it underwater.

As mentioned earlier, the Gen 6 imitates the design of a traditional watch and gets closer to it, so much so that it is difficult to notice that it is a connected watch. Indeed, the screen takes up the circular shape of the dial of a classic watch and many standard themes are similar to those of a chronograph, among the fortnight available as standard. It is of course possible to download more, as well as to personalize them according to your tastes and needs.

The screen measures 1.28 inch in diameter, or 3.25 cm, and displays a definition of 416 x 416 pixels, or 326 pixels per inch. We will however regret the black border of a few millimeters, which is quite visible and not very pleasant to use. AMOLED technology makes the screen easily readable in full sun, while saving the battery when only needles are displayed in mode “Always-on”. The brightness adjusts automatically, making it possible to maintain the screen readable during the day, without dazzling at night. If necessary, it is possible to turn off the screen, to the cinema for example, and to automatically activate the mode ” do not disturb “ When the watch is removed from your wrist.

Fossil Gen 6 Use and Application

In terms of technical specifications, the Fossil Gen 6 is the first in the market to embark the SOC Qualcomm Snapdragon 4100+. The latter thus allows him to be more swift than the previous generations and to offer better autonomy, but also to take into account more health -related features, which we will detail below. The watch also has 8 GB of storage and 1 GB of RAM, which is identical to the fifth generation. On a daily basis, it is fluid and reactive: there is no latency or loading screens; Here we find an experience worthy of a high -end connected watch.

Gen 6 being the first Wear OS watch to be announced after the arrival of the Galaxy Watch 4, many expected it to be equipped with Wear OS 3, the new operating system co -developed by Google and Samsung. Unfortunately, this is currently reserved for the Galaxy Watch 4 and will only be offered current 2022. In the meantime, Gen 6 runs under the old version of Wear OS, but can still benefit from third -party applications, while offering the possibility of paying with Google Pay and interacting with your notifications.

Of course, the Gen 6 allows you to use the Wear OS tiles, including those of third -party applications in order to access key information directly by sliding to the right from the home screen. In addition, unlike the Galaxy Watch 4, the Fossil Gen 6 works with Google Assistant, which can be activated either by maintaining the pressed crown or a gesture to the left from the dial. More classically, a downward shift displays the notifications and a gesture from the top of the screen will display the control center, so for example to activate the plane mode, the battery saving, to cut the sound, to cut sound, to cut sound, to cut, sound, sound, sound, sound, sound, sound, sound, sound, sound, sound, sound, sound, sound, sound, etc.

As mentioned above, it is possible to interact with the watch using the crown on the right, in particular to parade through the different menus, but above all to configure shortcuts to your favorite applications in order to access it from the one of the two buttons on the right. For my part, I configured one of them so that he opens Google Pay, in order to be able to settle without having to handle my watch for a long time.

The Fossil Gen 6 is delivered by default with most standard applications, such as Google Fit, but also contacts and the Google Agenda. Fossil has also preinstalling additional applications, which can be removed, such as cardiogram and facer. Be aware that it is not necessary to use them in order to benefit from the standard functions of the watch. Only the wellness application of Fossil is necessary in order to be able to follow your sleep, but we will come back to it later.

Finally, Gen 6 requires, for the moment, the installation of the Wear OS application to configure it. The latter also makes it possible to select the dial and configure notifications, but is not particularly useful on a daily basis. Wear OS 3 could also abandon the use of a companion application, in favor of interactions made directly on the watch.

Fossil Gen 6 health features

The Fossil Gen 6 may look like a classic tocante, it has a slew of sensors, some of which are dedicated to following your activity and your health. It thus has cardiac sensors, SPO2, a cardiofrequency meter, a GPS, a compass, a podometer and an accelerometer. More simply said, it can track down your activities from the simplest to the most complex, such as walking, running, cycling, but also sleep, by analyzing your heart rate, the number of steps, the distance traveled, the speed and the Oxygen rate in the blood.

Depending on the application used, you can follow complex activities, such as bodybuilding, yoga and more, thanks to Google FE. I personally did not appreciate the well-being application of Fossil, which does not offer this level of granularity and cannot measure the number of steps without having manually launching an activity. In use, you can even uninstall it and prefer Google Fit, who is responsible for saving your steps in the background in a background. Unfortunately, the latter is not able to follow your sleep, and you will need to use the wellness application to do this. Fortunately, it fits with Google Fit and allows you to follow your sleep phases on your smartphone in one and the same application. Be aware, however, that the cycles followed are coarse, since they are only distributed in deep and light sleep.

So I favored Google Fit to follow my daily steps, but also my activities such as bodybuilding or walking. The only reproach I would do to the application is having to manually launch an activity, unlike the Apple Watch which automatically detects that you walk, run, or cycle and suggest you follow it. The main difference is that by manually launching an activity, you activate the GPS of your watch, which aims to follow the exact journey, but also to measure your speed and distance traveled much more precisely.

But above all, in addition to having to manually launch an activity, I happened to forget to stop it, which let Google thought that I made bodybuilding for more than six hours, since She is not able to understand that you have finished an activity. These limitations are quite regrettable and can be easily corrected, if only by based on the heart rate and the movements detected by the accelerometer.

Of course, if you run or walk, have registered your steps all the same and can estimate your activity, but the result is not always precise: for example, keeping my watch on the wrist at night, it thought that I ‘had taken a hundred steps, when I had not come out of bed – and I am not sleepwalker, even if my watch seems to contradict me.

The advantage of a Wear OS watch is also the possibility of installing third -party applications, like Strava, which I particularly like to follow my bike outings. Of course, the latter will be able to use the GPS and cardiac sensors of the watch in order to fully track down your activity.

Unlike certain market watches, including Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch 4, the Fossil Gen 6 does not allow electrocardiogram or measure your tension or bio-impedance. However, it must be noted that these features are imprecise on a watch and even work randomly on the Galaxy Watch 4. In reality, even the SPO2 sensor is not very useful on the Fossil Gen 6, since it will be necessary to launch the measure yourself, and that it is specified that it has no convincing medical value.

No matter the application you use, you can easily follow your health data from the home screen tiles, but also your phone, knowing that most of them integrate with Google Fit.

Fossil Gen 6 Autonomy

The Fossil Gen 6 has a 300 mAh battery, ensuring an autonomy of around 24 hours in standard use. In use, I managed to last almost two days by deactivating the mode Always-on, But by following my sports activities with the GPS and the heart sensor. In normal use, with mode Always-on On and followed by activity with GPS, the consultation of notifications and some payments, I easily held a whole day, even if I had to charge it the next day. Know that if you want to keep it on the wrist at night to follow your sleep cycles, the Gen 6 will be able to get out of it, even after a whole day of use, with a battery at around 20 or 30% the next morning. Knowing that it recharges 80 % in 30 minutes, you can connect it by having your breakfast and your shower to be ready for the day.

The watch also offers different methods of autonomy, limiting certain features to save battery. Some, however, have little sense, since one of them is limited to only displayed the time, transforming it into a vulgar watch, but allow to reach several days of autonomy.

Regarding battery recharging, it is carried out thanks to the charger supplied which is magnetized, but is unfortunately not induction. This means that you will not be able to use a standard Qi charger to recharge it and will have to be satisfied with the owner cable provided by the brand. On the other hand, the load is very fast and the watch reaches 100 % in just an hour.

Fossil Gen 6 Call and communication

The Fossil Gen 6 communicates with your smartphone using the Bluetooth 5 standard.0 le, but can also recover your notifications via the Wi-Fi network, allowing you to access it even if you have forgotten your phone at home. Unfortunately, there is currently no 4G variant of the watch, which means that you will lose connectivity if you do not have your phone at hand- unless you run in a covered forest in Wi- FI.

The watch can however make calls using the Bluetooth connection with your smartphone, which can help. Audio quality is average: the speaker is relatively clear, but lack of volume. The microphone is imprecise, the correspondent only understands the voice, unless you speak directly in the watch.

Finally, the watch also has a GPS sensor as well as an NFC chip, essential to be able to pay in a wrist.
