Tesla chargers: Ford and GM vehicles will soon be able to use them

It is well known, the network of Tesla chargers is the most extensive and effective in North America. The latter has an exclusive charging connector. This is the reason why vehicles from other brands cannot use it.

However, since last November, Tesla rival manufacturers have permission to install it in their own vehicles in order to be able to take advantage of the company’s network.

Consequently, we have seen manufacturers interested in it. In recent weeks, two agreements have been concluded with two of the three American giants, while the third studies the thing. Concretely, Ford and General Motors (GM) agreed with Tesla for the use of its charging stations while at Stellantis, we study the thing close.

Ford will integrate Tesla connectors

The company recently confirmed that its next generation of electric vehicles, which will gradually reach the market from 2025, will be equipped with integrated Tesla connectors. The latter are known under the acronym NACS (North American Charging Standard).

If everything is made possible, it is that Washington announced last February that some of Tesla’s stations would become accessible to rival brands vehicles. In exchange, Tesla will receive part of the federal funds intended to develop the charging infrastructure across the country.

For other manufacturers, we are talking about access to some 7,500 Tesla stations, including 3,500 ultra fast chargers. For owners of Ford models, access will include around 12,000 stations.

In Canada, we are talking about access to 750 terminals by the end of 2025. The catch is that the latter will be between Ottawa and Calgary. This will disappoint the owners of electric cars domiciled in Quebec and British Columbia.

GM will use the Tesla loader network

Shortly after the agreement intervened between Ford and Tesla, we learned that GM did the same. Thus, the owners of electric vehicles manufactured by GM will be able to use a large part of the vast North American Reload network of Tesla, or around 12,000 of the around 17,000 Tesla chargers. At GM too, we are talking about the use of the Tesla charger from 2025.

“Like Ford, we see this as an opportunity to expand access to recharge,” said Mary Barra. Elon Musk added that GM and Tesla vehicles would be on an equal footing on charging stations: “The most important thing is that the revolution is progressing that electric vehicles are. »»

This is the primary objective of Tesla’s big boss. At a conference held in Austin, Texas, he mentioned that access to his exclusive charging networks “could actually be a competitive disadvantage”, but that “would help the rest of the industry”.

Mary Barra also said that joining the Tesla network would almost double the number of chargers made available to GM electric vehicle owners.

Stellantis follows the parade

Finally, after seeing Ford and GM announce agreements with Tesla, we learned that we were studying the thing at Stellantis.

“For the moment, we are continuing to assess the NACS standard and we look forward to discussing more in the future,” Stellantis said via a press release to the Reuters group. “Our goal is to offer the customer the best possible charging experience possible. Our brand Free2Move Charge will offer simple and transparent solutions, whether at home or on the go, thanks to partnerships with charging service providers ”.

What will be interesting to monitor is the reaction of the owners of Tesla vehicles; There will soon be more traffic to the company’s charging stations.
