Subscription sharing: the right plan to make big savings
Streaming, video games, software, VPN, press … Many services are now offered on paying subscription. But we can drastically lower the invoice by sharing an account thanks to specialized platforms.
Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Canal+, Paramount+, Molotov, Deezer, Spotify, Qobuz, Microsoft 365, Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation, Google One, YouTube Premium, Nordvpn, Cyberghost, Le Figaro, , Liberation … All these contents, these tools and these services have one thing in common: their access is subject to a subscription, obviously paying. And, in most cases, it is possible to use it with several. A commendable intention from publishers who thus allows several members of the same home to also benefit from the service. Except that this use, normally reserved for a nearby circle, is often diverted in order to give access to friends or family members not part strictly speaking fireplace.
Netflix has the intention of putting an end to this practice synonymous with shortfall. The American streaming giant promised to set up an option – paid, obviously – to share an account in the spring of 2023. A formula already tested in several countries and which should soon come into force in France with binding control (see our article). The Spotify music streaming service had already attempted to limit account sharing by relying on the geolocation of its users. After a general outcry, the Swedish had backtracked.
In the meantime, the sharing of subscriptions continues. And if most subscribers practice it free of charge, others see it as a way to lighten their invoices by asking for participation in costs in those who wish to take advantage of the service. A kind of “sublet” applied to online subscriptions as is practiced, discreetly, in real estate. And to organize all of this, there are today several platforms specializing in subscription sharing, such as Spliiit, Sharit, Sharesub or Diivii. And these services are effective: we have seen this by taking three subscriptions totaling 47 euros per month for less than 10 euros. A great reduction which still represents a saving of almost 400 euros over a year !
How online subscription sharing work ?
These subscription sharing sharing platforms work on the principle of supply and demand through a market place (Marketplace in English) by applying the concept well known in the world of carpooling. Holders of a subscription subscribed for example with a VOD or SVOD service, benefit, depending on the formula they have retained, from several “places” corresponding to as many different profiles accessible with their account. They can thus offer available places they do not use.
For example, a Netflix Premium package at 17.99 euros per month offers the possibility of managing four users simultaneously. If we are alone, we can thus make three user accounts available and divide the invoice by four to, in the end, pay for your subscription only 4.50 euros (provided you find three co-windows). For their part, interested users subscribe directly to the platform without contacting the owner of the account. Once their subscription has been recorded, validated and the price requested paid, they can connect to the service. Aside for Netflix and Disney+ even today, it is not necessary to give the identifier and the password of the account. Most services use invitation links to join the account. Simple, practical and secure since no confidential information is exchanged. Payments are also made from the platform.
Note that the subscription holder can withdraw his offer at any time and that the “co-abundant” can also stop his subscription when he wishes. In the event of seeds, the sharing platform reimburses all or part of the subscription costs. And if you already have an account with a service, do not panic. We were able to carry out the experience for example with Apple Music. We already had a billed account 9.90 euros from Apple. We put an end to it to take out a subscription via a sharing platform at a price of 3.32 euros per month. After clicking on the invitation link received, we once again accessed the service and found all our playlists and preferences. Practical.
Is the subscription sharing legal ?
The existence of these platforms is based on a legal vagueness. Account sharing is a possibility offered by online services. Generally, it is limited to the family circle or to people “from the same home”. However, difficult for these services to control which is part of the same home (blended family, roommates, seasonal workers living mainly outside their home, etc.)). The concept therefore remains very vague to be rigorous but the sharing platforms still take their precautions so as not to find themselves in an overhang. All of them thus specify in their general conditions of use (CGU) that the user who shares his subscription declares to be in accordance with CGU and the GTC (General Conditions of Sale) of the service he wishes to share. In other words, everyone is carefully reading their subscription contract to find out if they have the right to make users available to not part of the home of unused profiles. In general, the answer is no, but what does it matter.
Pending clarification of the law or jurisprudence, subscription sharing platforms still have a bright future ahead of them. Especially since everyone wins. Streaming or web services platforms garner and keep users who are probably not subscribed to the strong rate and users pay less. Obviously, in the equation, sharing platforms also find their account.
How much is the online subscription sharing ?
Subscription platforms are nothing philanthropic. To connect subscription holders and co-bodies, they have a website, secure servers, a banking transaction system, personnel … All these elements have a cost and to pay themselves, they apply a commission system. The amounts are very close to each other. A first commission applies to the subscription holder. It is set at 25 % of the transaction (except with Sharesub which does not apply a commission). A second commission is deducted from the co-abundance (between 4.5 and 10 % of the amount of the transaction according to the platforms) to which are added fixed monthly costs between 0.20 and 0.35 euros. Sharesube applies for its part of the costs of 0.39 euros per transaction in addition to the Commission.
Despite this, the “co-abaltent” remains profitable and much cheaper than a standard subscription. For example, instead of paying 42.97 euros per month to take advantage of Netflix Premium (€ 17.99/month), Spotify Family (15.99/month) and Disney+ (€ 8.99/month), the bill falls at 10.69 euros per month. For the three services in their most high -end declination. A cost divided by four (sometimes even by five depending on the services selected and the sharing platforms).
Is the online subscription sharing sure ?
Sharing platforms are trusted third party. The money received is placed on a sequestrian account and issued each month if everything goes well between the subscription holder and his co-bodies. A step that prevents sharing for example, by means of finance, the free trial period at an online service. All platforms also indicate that the modification of the password of an account is generally subject to a secure procedure (double authentication for example) which prevents a subscriber from modifying the password to a service without the knowledge of the account owner. It is however strongly recommended to use a password radically different from that used for other accounts (online services, messaging, etc.)). Nevertheless, nothing prevents the subscriber from sharing in turn the identifiers necessary to access a service.
Finally, note that services like Amazon Prime Video whose identifiers are used for access to streaming, but also for the store and online storage, are not offered to sharing. Finally, no concern either when it comes to sharing the subscription to a cloud service like Google One or iCloud. They operate by invitation link and the data of each user obviously remain inaccessible to others fortunately.
What are the main subscription sharing platforms ?
Today, four large French platforms allow you to share and access digital subscriptions at a lower cost. There are others like Togetherprice (Italy) or Gamsgo (England) but their operating principle is much less clear and supervised and most of the indications are not translated.
Diivii
Diivii offers more than 40 audio and video streaming services. The service is quite simple to access and the commissions sufficiently low to achieve great savings.
Sharesub
This platform is the only one not to take a commission from subscription holders who initiate sharing. On the other hand, the commission for the co-bodies is the highest. Sharesub also has the richest catalog with 75 audio and video streaming services available.
Sharit
From its full name Sharitandstream, this platform is very simple to use. The amount of the commissions deducted remains reasonable and the catalog of services offered comfortable to find something to be entertained and work at lower cost.
Spliiit
Spliiit was the first subscription sharing platform to be launched in France in 2019. This asset gives it the advantage of taking advantage of a large number of users to find the subscription that suits you. Furthermore, Spliiit takes a commission from the subscription holder (25 % of the amount of the transaction capped at 1 euro) that the first month.
Difficult to say today what will be the future of subscription sharing platforms, if the legislation is evolving or if the services, like Netflix, modify their conditions of use. Always is it that this system works well, and that, as we have noticed, it allows you to make great savings. No reason to deprive them therefore !

Spliiit: What do you risk sharing your Netflix, Spotify or Amazon Prime on this site reports ?
The Spliiit site invites you to share subscriptions to online services to pay less. This practice poses a lot of safety concerns that the site cannot yet resolve.
Since May, a new site has appeared in the Streaming Tools Market. His name is Spliiit (with three “I”) and was created by 3 French. The objective is to offer a platform to share your SVOD accounts or other subscriptions and thus pay less each month. The enticing idea may seem too beautiful; poorly used, it can cause you problems.
What are the promises of Spliiit ?
Registration on the site is free. Once your account is created, you can indicate which subscriptions you have subscribed and those to which you would like to subscribe. The choice is varied. There are more than sixty services, such as Netflix, YouTube Premium, music or video game services on demand, but also more unexpected platforms: sports halls, e-commerce sites, file storage online, museums, cinemas or an account on the French games.
Sharing takes different forms. Most of the sites offered authorize their users to share their account with several (but only with the family or with residents of the same home), others allow you to make your loved ones benefit from advantageous sponsorship offers. In some cases such as the sharing of an internet box between roommates, the site turns out to be just a platform to simplify reimbursements … with a commission of 4 % (may prefer a trricout).
Jonathan Lelinec told us that this price would change a little with the implementation of the V2 of the site – it is for the moment a beta version -: ” People who wish to share their account to pay cheaper will have to pay us a euro for each new sharing, only the first month. Then we will take the classical commission of 4 %. »»
If we put the commission on the side, it is indeed possible to save money. On Netflix for example, for fifteen euros, you can be up to 4 people on the same account, each of which can have a reserved session. The problem is that it is sometimes not secure and that the services do not all authorize it.
Do not give your password to anyone
For some platforms, it is not necessary to give your password to share an advantage on a service – an affiliate link does the trick. But this is not the case everywhere and this is where Spliiit encourages bad practices.
A user who calls herself Klakinoumi noticed in a blog post that to share a Netflix account, it was necessary … Share her password in clear via a system of messages.
Be sure to protect your password well. // Source: Numerama assembly
Jonathan Lelinec confirmed this on the phone. “” For Netflix we unfortunately cannot do otherwise for the moment, he said. We advise to share the password rather by email and only with relatives »».
Other SVOD services are concerned, notably OCS, as well as the Xbox account.
Two problems arise with this type of sharing. First, many people still use the same password for many, or even all their accounts. It is dangerous and more precisely in this kind of case. By giving your password to anyone, you may have your social networks hack or accounts on purchasing sites-on which you may also have your bank card data. You open a door on your life to strangers. And contrary to what Spliiit evance, share a clear password by email is not not a secure practice.
The other risk is to make you fly your account. It is possible when you are connected to Netflix to change the password of the account. It’s very easy. You will normally receive an email to notify you, but it is also possible to change the email address, preventing you from realizing it.
Spliiit teams are still trying to open discussions with Netflix on this subject, but without success. For the moment, Jonathan Lalinec admits being a little short of ideas. “” For the moment our service is clearly dedicated to families or friends, so to people who can a priori trust themselves, but many people have asked us to open it to strangers. “He specifies that the next version of the site will be more explicit on the risks incurred, that it specifies for the moment in its fairly questions and admits that in the event of an account theft, they cannot” do nothing »».
You can always put an end to payments with your bank, but if it refuses, you will not be able to file a complaint. Netflix CGUs specify that you should only share your account as a family: by not respecting them, you break the contract passed with the company that can return this fact against you.
Money against subscriptions … without guarantee that they exist
When you decide to “spliiiter” with someone, the site requests to connect to our PayPal account – this is the only payment method available at the moment. And we must validate the payment before having been able to verify that the other person had the subscriptions that they promise.
It is therefore better to share your accounts with trusted people than strangers encountered on the web. In the event of a problem, it will be up to you to oppose your bank account or PayPal. The site should then delete the problematic account. According to our tests (carried out with an anonymous account), chat customer service seems particularly reactive and it has the advantage of being held by real humans and not a bot.
Do people have access to our bank details ?
On most of the accounts you have, you may have chosen to record your bank details so that you can make your purchases faster.
CC. Negative Space
On this point, there is a priori no concern to have. E-commerce accounts are independent. This is the case on Amazon Prime for example: Spliiit only invites you to invite another person to test a free trial offer. So it’s not sharing. The person in question will remain connected to their own account, from which they will have access to the advantages.
It therefore does not have access to your account and cannot make purchases or recover your bank details. On the other hand, she will need to register for your date of birth … which can also be dangerous. Many people use this date as a password on other sites, or as a security question for services.
On culinary box purchasing sites, you can see your postal address. As it is a question of sharing the content of the box for several once it has been received, this offer is really intended for people who know each other (business, roommate) … and can run considerable risks if it is Made with strangers.
Share a cloud service, really ?
Spliiit also proposes to share services for which the risk of violation of privacy is important. This is the case of cloud storage services that allow you to store your online files and photos like Dropbox or Google Drive.
Spliiit highlights two ways to do: either everyone keeps their account and shares advantages (we therefore fall back into sponsorship), or the account is shared. In this second case, the risk for privacy is very important: consider that you have an open door to your digital life.
Is it really authorized by sites ?
Sharing your accounts may seem innocent in some cases, but it is in most cases contrary to the rules of use (CGU) of the platforms, which only allow this sharing between close – in certain forms.
There is for example a family offer on youtube premium. For 6 euros more than the classic subscription (at 11.99 euros), it allows to group up to 6 individual YouTube accounts. The offer is in theory reserved for people who live in the same family home.
The same problem arises on Netflix, whose CGU clearly stipulates: ” The service (…) is reserved for personal use (…) and should not be shared with people outside your home »».
Netflix screenshot
Spliiit’s responses in his fairly questions are struggling to convince.
Spliiit is in contact with certain companies whose services are offered. Others, however, have not been consulted beforehand. They could therefore decide if they wanted to close your account overnight.
Netflix is known for its great tolerance on the subject. His CEO himself says he is rather favorable to shared subscriptions. For the company, this allows you to conquer an audience that does not have the means or the desire to pay 8 euros per month, but which is ready to give in for 4 euros. So you don’t risk much on the legal side, but you will have shared your password with strangers … which is not recommended.
For other services, it is Spliiit who risks big. The cinemas in particular, are not renowned for their leniency on the sharing of subscriptions or the optimization of grouped prices for individuals.
20,000 prize pools created since May
Today, the site already has 30,000 registered. About 20,000 prize pools have been created, but not all are active. Jonathan Lelinec tells us that 10 % of users are really active at the moment ” Because this is a beta version and that it will only be able to pay via PayPal brakes them. »»
An Italian competitor allows you to realize the potential of the site. The Togetherprice platform has existed for about a year and claims more than 250,000 users. It offers shared access to similar platforms such as Netflix, Spotify or Dropbox. Notices seem to be shared about it.
Several Internet users report scams, payments not received or that cannot be canceled: they seem mainly linked to customer service deemed mediocre. No on the other hand seems to say that its account has been deleted due to the use of the platform. The latter explained to us that she has convinced certain SVOD services: one of them would agree to find a connection system by a link to avoid having to share her password.
But will companies agree to go in the direction of these services will have an interest in collaborating with them ? They can just as easily offer a split House, native and secure.
