What are the speed limitations on the highway ?
There highway speed is not limited to 130 kilometers per hour allowed. Several elements can modify the maximum authorized speed: weather conditions, driving license seniority, type of vehicle … without forgetting that there is also a minimum speed to be respected on highway.
By car Simone reviews all speed limitations on the highway, but also the sanctions incurred when drivers do not follow them.

Speed and highway: the evolution of the regulations
The notion of speed authorized for drive on a highway has not always existed. If the first French highway was created in 1946, it was not until 1973 to see the first speed limit appeared. This was set at 110 km/h and increased to 140 km/h the following year. Unfortunately, the state of the motorway network cannot guarantee the safety of users at such a speed, the limitations have been changed again, leading to a Reduction of maximum speed authorized at 130 km/h under normal traffic conditions.
Know speed limitations on highway
Traffic speed is regulated on the entire road network, and highways are no exception. However, the speed limitations are not the same for all drivers. Here are the different speed limitations applied to the highway.
With us, the code is free
But not at a discount
For confirmed drivers
A confirmed driver who has obtained his driving license for over 3 years (2 years for accompanied driving) is authorized to drive to:
- 130 km/h per dry weather;
- 110 km/h in rainy weather or other precipitation;
- 50 km/h when the visibility is less than 50 m (fog).
For young drivers
There highway speed for a young driver holder of a probationary permit (or for a driver who had to iron it) is limited to:
- 110 km/h whatever the climatic conditions;
- 50 km/h if the visibility is less than 50 m.

For heavy goods vehicles
Heavy goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must drive at a maximum authorized speed of 90 km/h, that weather conditions are favorable or unfavorable. When visibility is less than 50 m, they are also subject to a limitation of 50 km/h.
Check the speed limitation panels on the highway, because Some sections are limited to 110 km/h. These speed limits are generally temporary. Their objective is to improve air quality in the event of a pollution peak or to streamline traffic in the event of a crowd.
Minimum speed on highway
When we think of the causes of mortality on the highway, we tend to think about speeding. However, a motorist who rides too low is just as dangerous as those who circulate beyond the authorized speeds.
It is for this reason that he is prohibited to circulate at less than 80 km/h on the highway (except when the lack of visibility requires it). On certain road portions where the elevation is important (uphill or downhill), the right track then becomes a route reserved for slower vehicles. Only vehicles cannot exceed the maximum speed of 60 km/h are allowed to circulate there so as not to hinder traffic on the other paths.
What sanctions related to speed on highway ?
Speed is the first cause of fatal accidents on French road networks. In case of non-compliance with the maximum authorized speeds, Several sanctions are provided for by the highway code:
- speeding on a highway less than 20 km/h : a flat -rate fine of € 68 and 1 point withdrawn on the driving license;
- speeding on highway greater than 50 km/h : a fine of € 1,500, a withdrawal of 6 points, a permit suspension for 3 years, even a driving ban and a confiscation of the vehicle, without forgetting the awareness internship for road safety.
Overlapping the authorized speed is a serious offense. Think of always Respect speed limitations, even when there is no radar !
The radar detector, the radar jammer and the radar warning are prohibited by law. If during a police check the agent notes that you use a GPS application or one of the anti-radar devices cited, you will be sanctioned with a withdrawal of 6 points on the driving license, a fine of € 1,500, confiscation of the device and 3 years of suspension of the driving license.

What speed on the highway ?
The speed limit on the highway is 130 km/h (110 km/h for probationary permits) in dry weather, 110 km/h in rain and 50 km/h when the visibility is less than 50 m. For heavy goods vehicles, the authorized speed is lowered to 90 km/h.
Why 130 km/h on motorways ?
If the speed is limited to 130 km/h on the highway, it is to avoid accidents due to an excessive look.
When to drive at 110 on the highway ?
When it rains or snowed, drivers must reduce the speed of their vehicle to 110 km/h. It is also the limit speed for young drivers !
