The Sony Bravia XR-65X90J is the most accessible LCD LCD TV Full LED in Sony in 2021.

Presentation

The Sony TV Bravia XR-65X90J has an LCD slab Va 10 bits and 100 Hz displaying an ultra HD definition of 3840 x 2160 px and a full led backlight system-with a limited number of areas, as we are going to see it. Image quality

This Sony TV uses a VA LCD slab (vertical alignment). This LCD technology effectively blocks the light of the backlight and makes it possible to obtain a good native contrast to the detriment of the vision angles which are more closed than on an IPS or OLED panel. This model does not embark the X-Wide angle optical filter of the above-end products (X95J). However, the drop in brightness is under control since we measured an average loss of only 60 % on the sides at 45 °. The X-Wide angle optical filter allows this figure to be lowered to 40 % on the 2020 XH9505. The reference in the field remains OLED televisions with a loss of brightness limited to 25 % on all models, including the last SONY 65A80J and LG models.

With the exception of a small willed on the very clear gray, the gray levels represented by the gamma curve are simply perfect with an average value of 2.35 very close to that of reference (2.4). On the other hand – and this is often the case with Sony -, the color temperature is a little high with an average of 7440 k quite far from the reference value (6500 K). The final rendering thus draws a little towards blue, but the curve is generally stable on the whole spectrum.

Finally, we measured a native contrast rate of 4,850: 1, very good for an LCD TV and which allows you to enjoy a good level of black in the axis. Compared to an OLED model, he will still have a little more trouble revealing the details of very very dark objects.

The Sony XR-65X90J has the new Sony XR cognitive processor already at work on the Sony OLED A80J and A90J. It manages the scale of SD, HD and Full HD content on the ultra HD slab, as well as the whole movement compensation part. In 2021, Sony worked on the perception of the human eye to improve the image. In practice, the difference is very difficult to establish with last year’s models equipped with the X1 Ultimate processor. In expert mode, scaling is very soft with a smoothing effect on flattens, without distorting the original source. By pushing the X-Reality Pro engine to the maximum, the Full HD version even seems more detailed than the native version ultra HD, but this is sometimes done with the appearance of artifacts. The X-Motion Clarity movement compensation engine works very well and improves the sharpness of moving objects without impacting the brightness. On this point, Sony is always a reference.

Hdr

The Sony 65x90J is compatible HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision, but it skips the HDR10+ promoted by Samsung. The HDR rendering is very good. With a signal at 10,000 cd/m², the reference EOTF curve (in yellow) is perfectly followed up to 70 % of luminance before TV smooths the curve to the maximum capacity. With an average delta e measured at 3.3, the colors cannot be considered as faithful to those sent by the source, but the rendering is generally very good.

The brightness peak measured at 785 cd/m² allows this LCD TV to compete with OLED models in terms of maximum brightness. On the other hand, it does not hold the comparison with the brightest LCDs such as the Sony 65ZF9 (1940 CD/m²), Samsung Qe65qn95a (1600 CD/M²) and Samsung 75q900r (2280 CD/m²). Small flat on the side of the coverage of the color space, since the Sony X90J displays only 85 % of the colors of the DCI-P3 space mainly used by the contents of the cinema and the TV series, when the OLED televisions go up to 95 %, just like some LCD models (TCL 65C815).
