E Solex

The original Solex was designed in the forties. Marcel Mennesson and Maurice Goudard are the inventors of this light and economical vehicle that falls out after the Second World War. Sold at a price lower than the minimum wage of the time, it allows everyone to offer themselves “a bicycle that rolls alone”. The ingenious inventors had probably not imagined that the Solex would be exported to more than 70 countries and broadcast in more than 8 million copies in the world.

e-solex

The e-lex revisits a rolling myth from the end of the forties by grafting a technological asset in the air. Its electric motor fits perfectly with the original spirit of this sympathetic moped. We tried it.

E-Solex: the electrical solex

A Solex for a minimum wage

It was in June 2004 that the target group bought the name of Solex in order to revive this rolling myth. He entrusted the design at the Italian Pininfarina style office, the research and development part is carried out in Europe, between France and Italy in particular. As for manufacturing, it is exported to China in order to offer a product at a more advantageous price. Sold € 1,150, this does not do the business of the century but which still allows it to offer it at a lower price than that of good electrical assistance bikes, even beautiful mountain bikes. For a little more minimum wage, you have the possibility of leading the next generation of a rolling myth, identifiable at first glance. It is also the strength of the Pininfarina office for having succeeded in rebuilding the project technically without distorting it. If its Fluette line immerses us in the past, its technology is avant-garde. Indeed, exit the heat engine switched to the front wheel and its famous drive roller. Instead, there is today a chest which allows you to transport a small charger for the lithium-ion battery, itself positioned in the main beam of the frame. Either an ingenious way to hide the heart of the modern solex. By going around, we notice that the front suspension is entrusted to a classic fork no larger than that of a medium -range mountain bike. In addition, the e-Solex retains the idea of the rigid frame of its elder. Indeed, the rear suspension is limited to a buffer spring under the saddle. In addition, the brakes are entrusted to discs at the front and rear, with mechanical control as on many cycle. Finally, the “low cost” price is felt in certain details. Eolex edge instrumentation suffers from an approximate finish and, according to some owners, the screws oxidize quickly.

E-Solex: the electrical solex

Pedge only to get started.

His nice boil pushes very quickly to climb in the saddle. But before, it is almost necessary to lift the electro bonomotor in order to be able to fold its very impractical central crutch and place it on its wheels. Fortunately, the weight contained (45 kilos with the battery) limits the effort, but the repeated maneuver during shopping sessions quickly becomes tedious. Then, the impression of riding a city bike or an electric assistance bike is omnipresent. We turn the contact key on “on” and we start a handle rotation. Starting without using pedals is possible, but it is advisable to help the e-olex in order to limit its energy consumption, which according to driving, varies significantly. For the moment, we evolve with great ease. Light, the e-lex leads to the look and without no longer pedaling on the dish thanks to the electric motor which ensures its mission with brilliance and approval. The silence of operation is savored, especially when we hear the tingling of the chain when one does not support on the pedals. At the base of the right handle, a small switch allows you to switch from economic mode (i) to more efficient mode (II). The change is convincing. In economical mode (i) and on the dish, the e-telex advances an honest 25 km/h counter. In mode II and on the same portion, the e-Solex advances at 35 km/h, and the descents still allow you to grab a few km/h. If the first meters make you want to roll “bare head”, the speed reached in cruise quickly makes you understand the whole point of a helmet. Anyway compulsory, since the e-lex is assimilated to a moped (50 cm3) and also requires registration and insurance. In addition, it does not allow you to take the bus routes and other cycle paths (except in bicycle mode), although the desire to roll there is strong, and therefore differentiates from the electric assistance bikes which they have there right. The latter therefore bring more a feeling of freedom, even if the legislation on the wearing of the bicycle helmet could change in the future. In this case, the e-lex would become essential.

30 km of autonomy verified by us

The behavior is satisfactory, even if the mechanical control disc brakes require grip and more regular maintenance than the usual hydraulic systems. In addition, the comfort of the machine quickly shows its limits, the small shock absorber under the saddle having all the sorrows of the world to amortize shocks. The fact remains that with a little address and usual, the lightness of the e-telex makes it possible to avoid most of the traps of the roadway. The presence of pedal sacrosaginates makes it possible to land the battery discharge. Admittedly, in this case, with 45 kilos and a fairly short gear, the e-solex will appear less easy than a Vélib ‘, enough to invite you to monitor the gauge (fairly precise) next time ! Its autonomy turns around 30 km (verified by us) against around 60 km according to the manufacturer. Of course, it depends mainly on the driving (especially the prolonged use of mode II) but also on the weight of the driver and the elevation of the terrain (crucial on the e-solex). Centerpiece of the machine, the battery (or accumulator) is cleverly hidden under a cache of the frame of the frame. It is removed in ten seconds and takes it to the office under the arm (it weighs only 5 kilos) to recharge it, which lasts between three and six hours depending on its capacity. And it left for a wheel. silently.

An alternative to VAE

We can only rejoice in the Renaissance of the Solex, especially in an electric version not diffusing any polluting rejection in the air. Nicely drawn, valuing because it stirs up the sympathy of passers-by, the e-Solex makes the same services as a electric bike. It rolls faster, but requires personal insurance and at least the road safety certificate if you were born after 1988 to circulate on board. Quite accessible to purchase, he suffers from a mediocre finish. The target group has a strong concept there, remains to refine details and, why not, develop a real range of electric solex ?

  • The myth is reborn !
  • handling
  • cost of use
  • removable battery
  • “Suspension” rear
  • modest performance
  • reduced equipment
  • refining finish

Solex Mopx thermal

Mopex alternatives and Mopelex Black’n Roll

The “thermal” Solex is not dead !

On the sidelines of the opportunities for sale on the auction sites where we find his happiness from 500 to 1,000 €, it is today always possible to drive on a new velosolex, on the condition of not calling it Solex. Indeed, this brand is registered and now belongs to the target group, which develops. E-Solex. French company based in the North, Mopex now offers the Black’n Roll S4800. Modern version of the original S3800 which made the rich hours of the velosolex, the Black’n Roll S4800 is sold € 995 for the black model and meets European approval standards, including a catalytic pot. Low consumption (between 1.1 and 1.4 l./100 km) of its 2T monocylinder makes it an economical model for use, despite modest performance (35 km/h max).
The S4800 is equipped with two drum brakes, a tachometer and a mileage totalizer. Considering a consumption of 1.1 l./100 km and a fuel at around € 1.6 per liter (2T oil included), nostalgia is good not to come back too expensive. Admittedly, the S4800 is barely cheaper than e-Solex (€ 995 against € 1,150) but it has the advantage of being able to refuel almost everywhere and not require a change of batteries after a few years.

Solex Mopelex thermal-electric hybrid

And for those who would like an e-telex which does not force to pedal once the empty batteries, Mopex offers the Mopelex, a hybrid cyclo with an electric motor of 36 V and 250 W coupled with the heat engine. This thus recharges the batteries of the electric motor, which promises a range of 30 to 40 km when it works alone. Reverse of the medal, the Mopelex weighs 10 kg more than the Black’n Roll S4800, but it allows you to drive in almost perfect silence.

E-Solex: the electrical solex

Without the shadow of a doubt, the e-Solex brings up to date a vehicle with a strong identity, historical and aesthetic, all coated with an undeniable charm asset. Today, he competes with other more efficient electric vehicles such as the 110 s e-maximum scooter or less bike bikes less bikes of around 10 km/h. The electric Solex, on the other hand, offers an unbeatable cost of use, even if it is necessary to take into account the wear of consumables, the battery, and the price of the insurance, certainly derisory but necessary since it is assimilated to moped. Finally, its performance and its radius of action confine it to strict urban use and preferably in areas where traffic is not too dense, because on board the e-solex, you do not feel able to to face circulation as on a two -wheeler with thermal motor.

E-Solex: the electrical solex

Equipment

The e-Solex receives a small chest above the front mudguard. Locating, it allows the transport of the charger for example. On the handlebars, there is a counter, and a load indicator (fairly precise). A dial also incorporates a watch. The finish of the whole is not in terms of design. The sound warning is powerful enough. The unique rear view mirror offers average security. We deplore the absence of lateral crutch or at least a more obvious power plant to use. Likewise, the e-Solex could have accommodated indicators. The disc brakes are mechanical control and the wheels are 17 inches (against 28 on certain city bikes). The luggage rack can accommodate for example a top box. E-Solex is only approved for a person. We can readily imagine being able to graft an additional battery on the luggage rack as on some VAE (example sparta ion). Likewise, the Research and Development Service could work on a battery saving system during the pedaling phases.

E-Solex: the electrical solex

Battery

The elax battery is of the lithium ion type, the best technology available to date. It does not have a memory effect. It therefore does not require being completely discharged before connecting it to the domestic network. Its lifespan is estimated at around 500 complete recharging cycles. It costs € 368 and weighs 5 kilos. Easily disengaging from its receptacle, it can then be connected to the charger at his workplace for example. The possibility of removing the battery is a strong argument of the concept of the e-solex. Please note, battery fixing pins take games with time and/or brutal implementation. In fact, electrical assistance sometimes cuts off on the pavers. This appears on the after -sales service problems encountered.

Perspective

The target group is already working on the future e-lex. This second version or “e-Solex phase 2” may no longer be assembled in China. The target group studies the possibility of repatriating manufacturing in Europe, in order to further control the entire process. Some materials will be reviewed. The future e-lex will certainly benefit from a better assembly quality. It is not yet known whether the price will be kept as it stands. This new version will arrive at the end of the year, a nice Christmas present in perspective.

VAEs (electric bikes)

Electric assistance bikes are experiencing an important boom. There are more than 10,000 pieces sold in France during a recent census when in the early 90s, it did not flow more than 1,500 units per year. This flowering trade has attracted a lot of small investors and the brands are numerous today. The average selling price runs around € 1,500. The price difference is however important between the VAEs sold in supermarkets and the models of specialists of the genre. So there are VAEs at 500 and € 2,500. On the guarantee side, after -sales service and longevity of the battery, the most economical models of large distribution are far from being up to the point.
As long as you live in Paris, you can try VAEs in “Electric Mobility Space”. This association created in 1997 is supported by EDF and the City of Paris. Its ambition is to develop the communication of vehicles with sustainable mobility. Their show room allows you to test different models of VAE. It is located at 16, rue de la Tour des Dames in the 9th arrondissement. Opening hours from Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
