What is a video aspect ratio ?

The image format refers to the relationship between the width and the height of your video in pixels. It is essentially a question of describing its form. For example, YouTube videos are in a wide screen format and the content of Instagram stories in portrait format. We describe the image formats as well: “width: height”. For example, the most widespread format on the big screen is 16: 9 and is suitable for YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook cover videos.

How to modify the image format of a video in Clipchamp ?

When you create a new video in Clipchamp, the default format is 16: 9. You can easily change the dimensions of your video during editing. Follow the steps below to find out how to proceed.

Step 1. Click on the Image Format button 16: 9

To modify the image format of your full video, click on the Image format button 16: 9 Located under the Export button.

2nd step. Visualize an overview of our image formats

The format options 9:16, 1: 1, 4: 5, 2: 3 and 21: 9 will appear under 16: 9. Pass your cursor on each image format to have an overview of the dimensions that best suit your video.

Step 3. Click on the format of your choice

To select a new height/width ratio, click on the chosen format. We opted for 9:16.

Step 4. Remove borders and black bands around your file

Black bands or borders (“letterbox” effect) will appear around your video if your multimedia file does not correspond to the format you have selected.

To delete black bands, click on your video in the chronology so that it is highlighted in green. The floating toolbar will appear next to the preview window of your video. Click on the fill button.

Your video will be automatically stretched/cropped in the new image format.

If the cropping does not satisfy you, for example because your main visual is no longer at the center of the preview of your video, you just have to reposition your video. Click on the video preview, then drag the video in the preview to create a new position.

You can also click on the adjustment button once you have clicked on the Floating Tool Filling button if you want to keep the video without cropping.

The adjustment button will add the borders to your video.
