Smart presented the Smart #3 coupe at Auto Shanghai 2023 in China in April 2023. This electric car looks like smart #1 in many areas, but the body is new and offers more space inside. It measures 4.40 x 1.84 x 1.56 meters and has a wheelbase of 2,785 meters. The drag coefficient is 0.27. It will be available in rear traction or in all -wheel drive and, depending on the version, with a power of 200 kW or 314 kW. The maximum speed is 180 km/h.

It was at the end of last year, in mid-November, that the first photos of the one that was then called without official confirmation the Smart #3, appeared on the net. Shorts from China while the manufacturer, which was among the first to offer a 100 % electric range, now belongs to the Géant Geely and Mercedes. No longer lacked when formalization: it is now done with the publication by smart of the first photos and official info that can be seen in the press release.

Before getting to the heart of the matter, maybe ask yourself when this smart #3 (pronounce “Hashtag Three“) will arrive on the roads. And the manufacturer Sino-German to confirm that its launch on the European market will take place in early 2024, after a visit next September to the IAA Munich fair.

Fluid lines and improved aerodynamics

As you have surely noticed, the smart #3 is very aesthetically close to the one that is still rare on our roads, the smart #1, since it is late. He actually takes up all the aesthetic codes, with fluid lines, curves, and a piercing look with almond lights connected by a light banner.

It is therefore necessary to play the game of the 7 errors to actually see some differences: the air intake in the hood is unique and not double, or the only deflector (against two on #1) in the shields of the shield.

The big difference with this #3 is that we are dealing with a coupé SUV. It is therefore the whole rear part which was modified compared to the “classic” SUV. In profile, we immediately note the fleeing pavilion towards the back, and a look that plays the “fastback”. The visual gain of sportiness of this #3 is also expressed with this beak integrated into the tailgate.

Obviously a way to integrate into a very promising segment, on which there are vehicles as different as the Tesla Model Y, Skoda Enyaq Coupé IV, but also the Volvo C40 recharge. But it is also the means of lowering the drag coefficient: it appears at 0.27, which, according to Smart, makes it possible to reduce vibrations and air noises.

A larger smart #3 coupé

Under the large panoramic glass roof, the interior of this smart #3 also looks like two drops of water to its alter-ego supposed to be more family. We find the feeling of cocoon with sporting accents which revolves around this large central screen of 12.8 inch and its famous intelligent fox which serves as a vocal assistant to the driver and his passengers. The Beats audio system at 13 speakers takes care of sound.

In terms of the new features of this #3, headrests are integrated into the seats, again to strengthen the sporting aspect. More surprising, however, Smart tells us about an elongated wheelbase which gives the impression of a larger interior space. The space between the wheels is actually extended compared to #1 ? Is it only an additional impression of space or is it really ?

Last November, the first info leaks on the model reported a 4.40 -meter length, 13 cm more than #1. In addition, we then talked about a wheelbase of 2.785 meters, against 2.75 m for the one who is already on sale. Dimensions supplemented by a width which would be 1.84 for and a height of 1.56 meters. So much data that seems to confirm what Smart vaguely tells us in his press release, but to check with the future European technical sheet. One thing is certain: it is that the platform is always the same, it is the Sea of ​​Geely origin, the same as on the Zeekr X and the future Volvo Ex30.

A brabus version that takes out the muscles

If Smart is still stingy in detail, the dimensions are not the only ones to still have to be verified: it is the same for the technical specificities. Again, it is on the side of unofficial info that we must go and get, because nothing accompanies the official photos of the day.

These confirm us despite everything the presence of two different versions, one of which is a new Brabus badge, in orange (“orange photon metallic” to be precise) in the shots. And we also know of a previous press release that the Smart #3 will be more powerful than the #1.

Power and autonomy

What still seems to confirm the info revealed at the end of 2022, which reported an engine to an engine of 271 horsepower, against 268 horsepower and 343 nm of torque for #1. The #3 Brabus will be equipped with two engines, one of 115 kW at the front, the other 200 kW at the rear for a total of 315 kW, or 428 horsepower. Again, it is a handful of equines more compared to #1 Brabus which claims 422 horsepower. But these figures are to be taken with tweezers until confirmation that we hope in the summer, upstream of the Munich 2023 fair.

On the side of autonomy, we expect figures fairly close to the smart #1. The latter announces a WLTP autonomy from 400 to 440 km thanks to its battery with a capacity of 66 kWh. It is more or less similar to the Zeekr X, which is a bit more upscale.

Price and availability

As we have specified above, the marketing of Smart #3 should take place in China by the end of 2023 then in Europe during the year 2024. The prices are not yet communicated, but they will certainly be higher than the 39,990 euros claimed by the Smart #1 in its entry -level finish.

Motorization and battery

For the moment, Smart has not revealed any information concerning the technical sheet of his future electric coupe #3, so we will have to wait a bit.

However, we can easily imagine the brand reuse the 66 kWh battery which currently equips the #1 model, allowing it between 400 and 440 km of autonomy. Smart #1 engines level, the Brabus version is equipped with an all -wheel drive for a total of 428 hp (315 kW) while the propulsion claims a power of 272 hp (200 kW). Business.

Launch and marketing

For the moment, the car has only been presented in China without any detail on European marketing. We will have to wait until September 2023 to find out more at the Munich show. Deliveries to customers are scheduled for early 2024.

As a reminder, the SUV Smart #1 is marketed in France from 39,990 euros in its entry -level pro+ version and € 47,490 in Brabus.

Smart officially unveils its second electric SUV, #3, after a series of stolen photos. The model is, unsurprisingly, a “cut” variant with a more fleeting roof of #1. He therefore largely resumes his DNA and his technical sheet.
It was on the occasion of the Shanghai Motor Show, from April 18 to 27, 2023, that the Sino-Germanic brand presents the SUV to the public. Like his brother #1, he adopts lines in curves like a pebble, and light banners at the front and in the back. But here, the roof is much more plunging, like cut SUVs, very trendy on the market.

Thus, the Smart logo placed on the custom of #1 migre on the front wing, the element being much finer. The glazing also evolves with a tight telescope and surmounted by a large spout. An XL panoramic roof is placed in the continuity of the windshield, almost over the entire length of the car. Smart does not specify the dimensions of his #3, but they should be close to those of #1. For the record, the model is 4.27 m long and 1.82 m wide and 1.64 m high.
Smart specifies that #3 is entitled to new exclusive shades, including an orange metallic photon and a matte electric blue outside, and a vibrating brown on board. The cabin will also be almost identical to #1, with a dashboard incorporating digital meters and a 12.8 -inch tactile slab in the center. The Haute central console releasing a few storage at the bottom of the passengers is preserved, but receives round central aerators evoking Mercedes when those of #1 are rather oblong.

A technical sheet identical to #1

On the technical side, Smart does not specify much in its press release. But the coupé SUV should resume as it is what the engines and batteries of #1. The #3 will therefore be based on the same SAE platform dedicated to electric groups from the Chinese group Geely (which has had 50% smart since 2020). It should thus embark a “standard” version with a single 200 kW rear engine (272 hp), associated with a 66 kWh battery offering approximately 440 km of autonomy on paper. If we follow the reasoning, an overpowered Brabus version could then join the catalog, with a bi-motor configuration offering 315 kW, or 428 hp.
Smart presents the “Chinese” version of #3 at the Shanghai Motor Show, before the arrival of the SUV in Europe at the Munich Salon in early September 2023. Marketing is planned with us at the start of 2024, at rates still unknown.
