Shadow makes its revolution: here are the new offers and new features

A few weeks after sharing with you our first impressions of Shadow’s Power offer, we have tested the service for the official release of the platform, since we had had an access to an early version so far. Shadow Power option test: our prints on the PC in the steroid cloud

Update of our test after the early access outlet of the Shadow Power option.

A few weeks after sharing with you our first impressions of Shadow’s Power offer, we have tested the service for the official release of the platform, since we had had an access to an early version so far. In theory, we access machines with better GPUs as well as a larger number of servers, which must improve graphic performance and help reduce latency.

We carried out the test with identical equipment (PC, monitor, Internet connection in ethernet) and exactly under the same playing conditions: 1440p definition, ultra quality, ray tracing and dlss activated.

In general, our gaming experience was more pleasant during this test than during the preview. We have noticed a net gain of images per second for the same configured graphic parameters. The latency is slightly less, but remains noticeable. Improvement at this level is less obvious than for the increase in FPS, but remember that the latency is also very dependent on the performance of the Internet connection and the distance separating us from the server to which we are connected.

On control, we measure between 75 and 80 images per second off combat, against about 60 before. Once the enemies appear, the framerate descends around 60 FPS, which is much more satisfactory than the 45-50 FPS to which we were entitled in this situation when early access.

Our game session on Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition confirms this observation. In the post-apocalyptic open world of the title, we benefit from peaks at 120 images per second, when we rarely exceed 90 FPS on the Shadow Power preview. A substantial gain that we also notice in the combat scenes, more fluid now that the cloud gaming service has reached its full potential.

Finally, let us add that we were able to enjoy a stable experience, without loss of packages, impromptu slowdowns or sudden cuts.

Since the acquisition of Shadow by Octave Klaba (founder and president of OVH) in the spring of 2021, the service of cloud computing has set out to renew its equipment and modernize its offers to relaunch. To attract players and professional users, Shadow is launching a new Power option, available from October 26, 2022. We had the opportunity to test Shadow Power for a few days before its release, here is what we thought of it.

Details of the Shadow Power offer

By subscribing to the Shadow Power option, users access a dematerialized PC equipped with the following configuration:

  • AMD EPYC 7543P processor with 4 cores and 8 threads.
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card (or equivalent models for professionals) or AMD GPU based on RDNA 2 architecture such as the Radeon Pro V620, developed for Cloud Computing and Cloud Gaming.
  • 16 GB of RAM.

Shadow specifies that when the Power option is launched, it is only NVIDIA RTX A4500 GPUs that will be offered, “Before a more varied range of graphics cards is deployed”.

The promise is to deliver a 4K game experience to 60 frames per second in ultra quality, and with compatibility Ray Tracing.

The conditions of handling

For the moment, we are offering you a handling of the Power offer rather than a final test with a note. Indeed, we have tried the platform in an early access version, which should not represent exactly the same conditions as those granted by the upgrade of October 26.

In particular, the GPUs provided are not Nvidia RTXA4500, but RTXA4000, which offer slightly lower performance. In our case, the service can also be subject to maintenance activities, which can alter the experience. Finally, during our test, we were connected to the Datacenter of OVHCloud in Dunkirk. At the exit of the Power option, datacenters closer to our position should be available to improve the quality of the streaming and reduce latency.

The Power option is billed 14.99 euros per month, to which the basic subscription to Shadow PC must be added, displayed at 29.99 euros monthly. This grants 256 GB SSD storage. Count 2.99 euros for each additional 256 GB tranche, up to 5 to.

All its PC games, on all supports

We are not going to get into the details of the operation of the service and its interface here since we have already published a full opinion on Shadow in its original formula. Let us only remember that Shadow allows access to a computer in the cloud, so that its system becomes accessible from anywhere and anytime, as long as you have access to a good internet connection.

Shadow recommends at least 15 Mbps in descending flows, 5 Mbps in rising flows and maximum 30 ms of latency.

Shadow is available on laptop or desktop (Mac or Windows), tablet (Android or iPados) and smartphone (Android or iOS). The experiment is continuous and transparent, that is to say that you resume your progress where you have stopped when you go from one device to another.

One of the great advantages of Shadow compared to other cloud gaming services (GeForce Now, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Google Stadia) is that the platform recreates exactly the same experience as if you used your Windows computer normally locally. You have your hand on your system, the possibility of customizing it as you wish, and installing the software you want ..

The main consequence for players is that Shadow allows you to install and play absolutely all the PC games that we have on the different launchers: Steam, Gog, Epic Games Store, Uplay, Ubisoft Connect, Blizzard Battle.Net, Origin … The platform thus blows up an embarrassing limit of competing cloud gaming services, which have restricted catalogs. It also means that you can install mods for your games, which is a cruel lack elsewhere.

256 GB of basic storage, it is little to install several AAA games.

In return, it is impossible on Shadow to launch a game immediately as on other services, we must install each game to which we want to play on the storage space that is assigned to us. And, there, the rub: the 256 GB awarded are well insufficient to have a wide selection of titles available without needing to uninstall and reinstall the games each time. After installing Cyberpunk 2077, Control and Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, we already had only a few GOs available. It is possible to add storage by switching to the cash register, but that still increases the bill, already substantial.

Performances and feeling in play

Now let’s go to the heart of the subject: are the performance promises at stake ? To put the Power option from Shadow to the test, we have launched game sessions on three gourmet titles which act as technological windows for their graphic quality, their management of physics or their use of Ray Tracing. If the platform shows up on Cyberpunk 2077, Control and Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, it should get by for about any game of 2022. Each time, we play in a QHD 1440p definition and in ultra quality. We also activate the DLSS, a scaling technology compatible with the RTXA4000 GPU.

On Cyberpunk 2077, Shadow is more like his advantage. With the parameters set on Ray Tracing Ultra, The playing conditions are completely correct, without being optimal. We measure an average of 45 to 50 images per second with the DLSS in automatic mode, which is satisfactory given the graphic options that we have selected. Players accustomed to playing in 60 fps will however note the difference in fluidity. For comparison, be aware that GeForce Now in its RTX 3080 package is higher under the same conditions by displaying between 55 and 60 frames per second, or approximately 10 fps. But, let us recall once again that a more efficient GPU, the RTXA4500, should come to improve the situation for the Power option during the official launch on October 26.

Left: Shadow Power / On the Right: GeForce Now RTX 3080

For Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, we also opt for ultra ray tracing, with a DLSS favoring quality. The exploration phases are particularly well in this game which does not swarm of life. We easily reach the 80-90 images per second, the image is superb, in short, the ride is enchanting. We logically lose FPS as soon as enemies are encountered, but the fluidity of the fighting remains quite sufficient. The DLSS 2.0 does wonders here. However, we note that by adopting the same graphic options, Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition allows more advanced and successful advanced effects (sand on the visor for example) on GeForce Now RTX 3080.

The fluidity is very satisfactory in Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition.

Control is a game that requires a lot of resources to run in good conditions with all the activated effects, and we have managed to reach 60 frames per second thanks to the DLSS. We note descents around 45-50 FPS once we go into combat and use telekinesis powers, such as levitation or launch of objects. Again, we get completely decent results, even if we have seen better on other platforms.

Control goes under 60 fps in combat

Now comes the question of latency. This was noticeable during our game sessions, much more than on GeForce Now or Xbox Cloud Gaming. On solo games, we end up moving. Better to avoid FST FPS at the Doom or racing games like Forza Horizon. For competitive online games, Battle Royale like Fortnite or Apex Legends, as well as shooting games in a more general way (CS: Go, Overwatch 2), latency can become a real problem affecting performance and convert in a source of frustration. Remember that we were very far from the test server for this early access and that latency should be absorbed with the provision of other data centers.

Shadow Power option: Clubic review

Shadow Power Option

The Shadow Power option offers satisfactory performance for users who would judge the basic configuration of the Gaming Cloud Service too weak to play in good conditions. It is possible to enjoy a very good graphic quality, with the ray-tracing activated on the compatible titles, and the management of the DLSS makes it possible to fly the framerate. Latence is present, but remains manageable for the practice of solo games. Shadow’s promise to benefit from access to a Cloud PC for several supports is held, giving significant advantages compared to competition: no catalog restriction, possibility of installing mods ..

It is unfortunately not with this type of technology that we will reduce the carbon footprint … quite the contrary.

Because not only do you have a PC available H24 for only a few hours (max) of use per day, but everything that is happening normally without “energy additional” between your PC and your screen, is now stremed with several dozen of Images per second through the net.

Because you think it’s a physical pc by customer ? If you do not use resources, another user does it and in the end, it consumes much less.

Does the Cloud PC also allow virtualization ? A powerful offer but less gamer oriented (and therefore a little cheaper) could be interesting to make labs “on prem” without going through Azure etc. If we don’t have the right machine.
Bad idea ?

Let’s admit, but you have sources, studies on the subject to be so categorical ? It seems personally not that obvious.
The machines in servers are machines less at the customer, with the management of energy that goes with it, not to mention the interviews … Heat management (sometimes used usefully) etc ..
I would be curious to read a real study on all of this.

Dynamic reallocation is not that dynamic, you only scratch a fraction, when you do not use the resource, if the virtual pc is “up”, your vcore and your true are indeed “reserved” and not sold to others.
Ditto for the disk space, you have a fully reserved volume, and it is up H24,

They make the overexploitation of resources:
For example: on your server you have something to put 10 vm of 8GB of ram and well they will stall 11 or 12, because even if you have reserved resources, everyone does not exploit 100% all the time. You do this on 10 servers, you wedge 120 people instead of 100, it makes you save 2 servers. So ultimately saving resources
They all do that, even big as Amazon / Azure

I do not think there are studies on the subject, I trust logic: a web server, it is more effective in datacenter, because it does not duplicate it, because it is up h24 -7/7-365, so to pool alims, chassis, electric backups.
There, there is a gain in the face of the individual who would host his website, for sure.
In the cloud gaming you have a duplicate: your local “rotten” bike with its consumption of it + the “virtual” bike which has no particular reason to be incredibly less voracious than local + huge stream Between the two elements.
Add to that that little “will” out “a distance bike, which will therefore remain up compared to a local.
The only gains, and it seems to me to be very skinny, may be on the gray energy of a largely more shared tower, and gain on the sharing and immediate reuse at the end of the subscription therefore a little less ecological imprint (and again, faced with a gamer who resells on the gear on the corner-corner, you have to see) .
Faced with the consumption it should not weigh heavy in any case.
I rely on the principle of parsimony, but if you have a mass argument in favor of an energy gain sufficient to crush the duplicate and the stream, I am ready to consider it.

You’re saying nonsense. Sorry, but on a high tech site it doesn’t go.
Same for your story to turn off the bike distance.
It’s not a physical machine, there are automatic watch systems on Shadow and elsewhere etc.
Sorry, I don’t want to teach you, really lazy, but I wouldn’t like others to be influenced by your mistake.

I want to imagine that you have a share of overbooking in the allowances, greater than that encountered in conventional VPS, which being up H24, cannot.
But as your calculation shows, you scratch what ? 20% of “farm capacity”, that says nothing for example, of the overinon generated by all those who have left their virtual machine up, when they have fatally extinguished their local bike.
This gain on the resource is likely to erase the consumption of massive bidirectional stream + the duplicate required by a local bike with its own consumption to operate the system ?

On the contrary, I am all hears, freed me

Philouze:
20% of “farm capacity”
It’s still significant I think
Philouze:
It says nothing for example, of the overcono generated by all those who have left their virtual machine up, when they have inevitably extinguished their local bike.
I am almost sure that VMs cut / reduce resources to the mini when not used.
Philouze:
This gain on the resource is likely to erase the consumption of massive bidirectional stream + the duplicate required by a local bike with its own consumption to operate the system ?
It avoids having big machines at home, a PC A 65W instead of 650W for example.

You may be right, and your reasoning is held, and I don’t know all that enough to judge or contradict you.
But it is true that a study on the subject could be interesting.

Mrassol:
It avoids having big machines at home, a PC A 65W instead of 650W for example.
Yes, but consumers (GPU, processors) remain the same at the end of the chain, the load in charge will most likely be identical (for the record a power supply anyway >90%, there is very little gain in expecting a hypothetical “personal” round which would have a “bad yield” with the exception of RGB gadgets possibly.
So anyway you will add up your local consumption of 65W to that of stream and to that of VPS

Starting from the principle that an hour of viewing a film on Netflix consumes as much as an air conditioning running 40 minutes, I think that the cloud gaming will not make things … my PC at home (if I do not play in line) must consume less I think.

Ah yeah you do the most eccentric analysis I have seen today … and by what principle an hour of Netflix is equivalent to 40 mins of air conditioning ?
Frankly hat.

This is the door open to access by his PC by subscription ..

It all depends on the server energy source
Then rationalize the consome hardware less than each their turn with components has often changed to wealthy games.
Then everyone will not necessarily do 4K so also a gain,…
Personally the price is high it is 600 € per year it is not nothing, even if it allows flexibility of gear.
On the other hand for pros out of video games it is interesting if we can install big soft type Houdini, Ansys, … but you need the GPUs that follow as CPU. For music it will be hassy the sound card and driver Asio on the more latency shadow,…
To have.

To be honest.
1 You can also stream a tablet if you really have something to do ..
2 bin never plays in network by what internet. It’s not just 2 computer on.So when we look at the whole chain
3 In real person does not wonder if the server he uses (Cloud or not) is Ecolo Frendly
4 Take the Clubic server uses green energy or not ?! You have two 2 hours

Netflix: 1 hour of streaming emits as many CO2 as 40 minutes of air conditioning ben here? Ok I mixed the brushes between CO2 emissions and consumption … but one trains the other ..

And you do how for the CG you also shared it at 100 person? It’s not the concept, it’s a CG by user.
On YouTube you have an excellent VIDEO of the Dev which launched the system which explains the operation. And also how the box sank then bought

Ezechielxae:
And you do how for the CG you also shared it at 100 person
You simply put several GPUs by server, in the same principle of overlying.

Personally, I find the service extremely interesting !
It remains very expensive (600 €/year) but it should not be forgotten that an equivalent config will cost more than double and lead to significant electrical consumption (more than 40kw/month for the old PC of my son).
Thanks to this solution, we can play on such a/tablet at the MCDO, on the living room TV, or on a simple PC screen with an Android box (mid-box).
As for the consumption of servers, I have a “small” unraid 5600g server + 2 RX6700XT and 2 vm Win11 “gaming” cards (via parsec) for my son and me + 1 VM Win10 simple for my wife.
When the 3 VMs are in “idle” (but not the web, git, plex services, …), the global consumption is 62watts, barely + that only one PC. Windows does not consume anything at rest, it is the components that consume electricity according to their use. And in my case, there is only a motherboard, a single CPU (Ryzen 5700g) and only one diet (recall: yield = 90%).
Certainly the datacenters consume well +, but the principle is the same:
Savings of ladders ! → Several users for a single hardware
Believe that the system has been envisaged for its profitability. And therefore 40 € per month covers hardware investment, energy consumption, maintenance, development, ..
At the current price of electricity, it would not be viable if the CPU/GPU load was all the time at most.
It would take more than 2 years to make good config profitable, but in technology, 2 years it is huge. In addition, the rental has always cost more than the purchase over time, it’s not new and that is another debate.

So almost 45 € per month on a “Gamer” virtual PC which has 256 GB of storage to be able to play games purchased ?? Okay ..

With OVH behind was fleeing, because the day you have to do to their after -sales service … Good luck
too stingy on storage. When you have a config with a 3070 you never have an SSD of 256GB.

“One of the great advantages of Shadow compared to other cloud gaming services”
Shadow is not a cloud gaming, it’s cloud computing.
On the other hand the price is abused, it is literally 3x too expensive.

€ 564 per year with a capacity of 512 GB … well normally a kit of evolution at this price ensures 5 years of additional existence of our “old tower” without need to go through fiber optics. It’s not theft because indeed you have to make the infrastructure behind it but it’s just not profitable at all. But thanks to the shortage, the computer will become a luxury and there it will be profitable but again thanks to geopolitical pretexts to set up prices for equipment which already does not cost the same price to production.

Frankly the price becomes ridiculous, personally I opted for the rental of a laptop, it is cheaper and at least your PC, and after the first rental it becomes even cheaper, about 38th in addition.

Feladan:
In addition, but this is depending on the businesses, it is easier to work on a nerve point to reduce the carbon footprint, rather than thousands of machines.
Please note, on your side you completely forget the energy imprint and very high speed stream resource required by a shadow. You stream the equivalent of a 4k/60fps Netflix served just for you
The gains, if there are, can only relate to the shared fraction of the gear (we imagine that the yields are close, as I explained the alims even personal are very close to the ideal).
By even imagining that the watch aspect of the VPS is negligible, the logic of duplicate/local repeater + the intensive use of stream is a consumer of resources and energy dedicated.
Indeed, we do not have the figures, but the principle of sparingly leans very clearly in favor of the premises. If at least the VPS were “real” shared, we could discuss, but this is not the case, there is a majority fraction of awarded.
This is what I find on Thom’s Hardware:
“Shadow can streaming in 4K at 60 frames per second. No magic in there: when GeForce Now uses grid cards whose power is shared between several users, Shadow dedicates a graphics card to each of its customers. Each Shadow server takes the form of a 4u rack, with a dozen GeForce GTX. Only the CPU and the storage space are virtualized and shared between several customers. The decoding box will only consume 7 W.””
When we know that on what remains of mutualisation, the VDISK is formatted and attributed (we indeed block a disk space to ourselves), and the Vcores of the CPU are perhaps the only elements in overbooking (and that’s not sure , because you have to manage the scenario where the 10 players connect simultaneously), the only real mutu are the chassis, the MB and the alims.
And there you have to swing an outgoing flow at 10*4k/60 fps
SO MUCH for the pooling of resources and beetle.
To simplify, you essentially have a very physical distant PC with its big graphics card, with the advantage that you reel it and that it is accessible from a distance.
But I am not sure that resource levels, as long as you have room and stream, and that hard core players probably have the same hours of play, we have a gain as in self-sharing. My meaning is the opposite.

In fact I did not really put water in my wine, because on the bottom, the logic (that of the duplicate) has not changed.
The target there is the hard core gamer is also displayed by Shadow. It is expensive, and it will always seem a little too complex for a lambda student who wants to put himself in gaming.
It implies that the local machine will almost always be a (old) gamer machine, not a trombon that consumes 60W, no, a gamer machine.
I am not saying that there will be no exception, or no guy on a laptop, I say that statistically, a box that targets the hard core gamer will have the customer equipped as such. Mainly.
Only instead of putting € 2K in a new CG and/or a new Mobo to stick the latest Ryzen Machinchose, you make a long -term rental of families, as in a car.
And you will double. You are going to consume so much or not far and stream, and turn a CG which explains Toms Hardware, is beautiful and well dedicated.
There is only one point that I grant you: working the economy or a 100% green contract at the Datacenter level is actually possible, while it is impossible for the distributed part.
Only, once again, we have not eradicated the local consumption, it is still there, and will be barely less important than at the start.
I do not close the door to sourced data that could prove me wrong, I just judge them at first unrealistic prime (but I would bow to data)

As long as it turns Elden Ring at 60 fps it suits me, I already have Shadow Boost and I’m waiting for Power

For my part I think I am over, the absence of HDR care and HDMI 2.1 being prohibitive for the moment.
I am far from making only a video game use and I would miss it for some films.
The offer is not bad but far from being as interesting as at launch, which was certainly not really viable as it is.
I hope they have put the argument “configuration always up to date” because it’s been a while since this is no longer the case.

At € 540 per year electricity included for a machine almost equivalent to a PC at € 1,500, it is obvious that you do not have the equivalent of this machine dedicated to you 24/7 and they do Everything to maximize the number of users on a machine ..
Just the CPU Epyc 7543p is € 5000 for 32 cores. Since they sell 4, if the resources were 100% dedicated, there would be 8 customers. 8 customers at € 540 per year on a machine costing at the very low word (€ 5,000 in CPU, € 5,000 in GPU, € 500 RAM, € 500 SSD, € 2,000 alims …) € 13,000, should already be more than 3 years old just to amortize the machine, without counting the energy, the locals, the staff ..

“A high price”
They also have to pay their electricity bill

No study on these subjects may show that there is a danger of talking about it and that we let us believe the opposite would ultimately be better !? NO

So actually no. These are virtual machines on servers that have 32 physical hearts and have 8 GPUs, which allows them to launch 8vm of 4 hearts / 8 threads simultaneously. Storage is decentralized, so the system and data are accessible to any server.
When a user stops using a “hardware” VM therefore becomes available for another user.

Quite. And in fact they can even launch more than 8 VM simultaneously by machine, depending on the use that is made by customers. Indeed the general conditions specify that even when the VM is started, it cannot be allocated all the power subscribed, if the user does not exploit power, the VM is allocated less:
Shadow can offer subscriptions and/or paid options giving access to differentiated configurations, or implement optimized allocation mechanisms for the calculation resources of servers according to user users. Thus, in the event that a user is launching programs and applications from Shadow® not requiring the material resources to which he has subscribed, Shadow will be able to use less efficient resources, as soon as the user experience will not be altered.
The conditions specify as well as VMs are automatically put in standby when they are not used:
In order to ensure an optimal allocation of its IT resources, Shadow® works with an extinction and/or automatic standby mechanism of the remote computer. Shadow is not responsible for the loss of data that can lead to standby or extinction, the user having been warned before each standing or extinction of his shadow®.

FYI my pc me ces on my shield TV that I throw it on a 4k screen and at the consumption level it’s really low compared to a fixed classic pc and we can also launch are shadow directly on connect TV therefore even more profitable At the carbon footprint level

Shadow makes its revolution: here are the new offers and new features

Shadow returns at the start of this summer with new offers and new features. The PC specialist in the Cloud has refreshed his offer and promises access from a simple browser.

Shadow in Browser

The French company, specialist in cloud computing, dust off its offer. Acquired in 2021 by Octave Klaba, Shadow has been launching from a new turn and has been news for a year. After filling up with new offers in 2022, the French specialist presented new formulas for creatives and professionals in May. Shadow is now attacking the general public by making several major announcements.

New offers for France

Shadow is positioned as a player in the Cloud Computing market, offering a subscription giving the possibility of accessing a virtual PC in the Cloud. The concept has been fascinating for years and interests in particular Microsoft who is working on the launch of Windows in the clouds. Shadow is also distinguished from cloud gaming offers, preferring to offer a complete solution that is not only oriented towards video games. This explains why today there are offers for creators (for makers) and professionals (for business).

Updating offers is an opportunity to abandon the formula at 29.99 euros per month, for the benefit of a subscription at 32.99 euros. An increase of 3 euros per month to access the PC in the cloud, which Shadow justifies by the doubling of SSD storage. It goes from 256 GB to 512 GB.

Shadow Price 2023

The Power option also evolves by also offering 512 GB of storage (SSD) and an increase in RAM from 16 to 28 GB. These changes are accompanied by an increase of 2 euros per month, with a price at 16.99 euros per month (instead of 14.99 euros). In total, the bill climbs 5 euros per month (49.98 euros/month) by combining the Shadow PC offer and the Power option.

The firm specifies that these new offers replace the previous ones and are immediately accessible to all new users. Current subscribers will be able to keep their current formulas and will not be obliged to migrate to new offers.

Shadow arrives in a browser

Shadow proves to be accessible from a large number of devices, ranging from computers (Windows, MacOS, GNU/Linux, Raspberry Pi) to smartphones and tablets (Android, iOS) via Smart TV (Android TV, TVOS). Nevertheless, one could not access his PC Shadow from the web.

Shadow in Browser

The service rectifies the shooting and announces the possibility of connecting from a simple browser. Shadow evokes instant and download access, highlighting the attenuation of the security problems linked to the installation of additional software. The Shadow PC in Browser function will arrive in early access in July.

One More Thing…

Shadow finishes by indicating the arrival of a new “Drag & Drop” function which facilitates the movement of files. It is now available on the Beta application and “soon” for all users.

Finally, Shadow Drive now fits into Shadow PC. A decision that follows the price drop in the cloud storage solution, which now offers up to 2 storage to 4.99 euros per month.
