Seat Mo 125 Performance test: the best electric scooter of the moment ?

Two years after the arrival of his first electric scooter, Seat is already seeing her copy. The new version of its MO 125 is more powerful, more comfortable and safer.

Released two years ago, the Seat Mo, the electric scooter of the Spanish brand, will welcome a little brother. The newcomer will also be stronger than his elder since it is a version with a boost power and some technical improvements compared to the original. Equivalent 125 CC requires, it will be necessary to have a B license and adequate certification to enjoy the beast in France. In exchange, Seat promises an ultra versatile means of mobility capable of sneaking in town and ensuring on a fast track when necessary. On paper, this MB 125 Performance has everything of the ideal electric scooter, but what really ? In order to give us our own opinion, we tried it.

Design: same ingredients, new recipe

Faced with the success of its SEAT MO 125, the brand of the VW group did not hesitate for a long time when declining its electric scooter. Neither on his will, nor on the way of achieving it. SEAT used exactly the same recipe, that is to say entrust the keys to development to its Catalan partner, silence. Besides, this performance version is not the only novelty in the catalog. Seat launches a 50 CC version at the same time, which takes up the same technical and aesthetic characteristics, with the exception of the engine, of course.

As a reminder, the MO 125 was a rebadged version of silence S01. Seat had slightly customized it but without making the slightest technical modification. It is quite different for the 125 performance. If it is very silence that is at work once again, it is indeed a unique model, exclusive to Seat. Of course, this is a variation of the previous version, but this time the Spanish brand had more latitude to modify certain aspects. The performance version therefore has a unique suspension, developed by Öhlins for this specific model. It also has a function boost which allows you to pass the maximum speed from 95 to 105 km/h (under conditions, we will come back to it). Finally, this engine which reaches a peak of 11.5 kW allows you to achieve 0 to 50 km/h in only 2.9 seconds, which in scooter is damn exhilarating.

These changes go almost unnoticed externally. An expert eye will undoubtedly notice the change of suspension but for the rest, apart from the two new colors borrowed from the Cupra brand, the performance version is almost copy/paste from the classic version.

This observation is anything but a criticism. Indeed, in 2020 we had underlined the quality of manufacture of MO, its ingenuity on key points such as its trunk capable of embedded up to two helmets or its removable battery with casters and a trolley. Two years later, our opinion has not changed. The MO 125 Performance is a robust, well thought out electric scooter that offers the luxury of being pleasant to the eye which is far from being the case for most of its competitors. In return, it will always be necessary to deal with an imposing template (2.26 m long) and a weight higher than the average (more than 200 kg).

Is it really more efficient ?

Are the changes to this new version of the MO convincing ? Above all, they justify an additional cost of around 2,000 euros ? To have a better overview of our comparison point, we strongly invite you to reread our test of the first version of the MO 125.

The performance version brings three major new features:

  • The Öhlins suspension
  • A way boost
  • A new braking system

Without being harmful, the suspension was not really an asset for the MO 125. Quite firm, it somewhat reduced comfort on board, especially on the highway or the smallest asperity could cause some slight tremors in the body. The new suspension is clearly from another ilk. The weight of the scooter is more controlled, and the Öhlins system is more effective to erase imperfections of the roadway. Above all, the suspension is very easily adjustable which allows, in addition, to adapt it to its type of driving. On this point the change is notable and effective.

The mode boost, It is the promise of bringing a power bonus when it is necessary. In the case of the MO, this situation is easy to determine: this is the highway, where the scooter caps at 95 km/h and where its relative lack of power can be lacking. Seat tried to remedy this with this quite surprising solution. Indeed, this mode boost, Only available in sport driving mode, can be activated when approaching 80 km/h. Consequently an indicator on the display informs the driver that he has an additional power reserve. The latter only has to activate the boost Via a simple support on the dedicated button to enjoy a power peak that can wear it up to 105 km/h for a period of 30 seconds.
This system, quite close to a “nitro” in a racing video game, can be used to surpass, fit into a fast track or simply to increase its speed. Only downside: it is limited in time and requires 2 minutes of “break” before being used again. Very situational, this option loses somewhat from its interest in use, even if this limitation of power makes it possible to spare the battery.

As for the brakes, their evolution simply corresponds to the main criticism that had been made with regard to the classic version of the MO 125. Its brakes were far too light given its power and acceleration capacities. For the performance version, Seat promised to take the bull by the horns and has therefore fully modified its hydraulic braking system. This is much more effective, but still suffers from the absence of an ABS system. However, at this price level, this braking aid appears as an essential element. SEAT confirmed to us that his teams were working on the upcoming integration of an ABS with the help of a European actor, Chinese systems being considered not effective enough. But this necessary improvement should only be integrated into the next iteration of the MO. In the meantime, this absence of ABS could be prohibitive for part of the potential buyers.

What is the SEAT MO 150 performance on the road worth ?

We will not dwell on the “Driving” part of the MO 125 Performance, it being quite close to the version we had tested two years ago. As for the main developments, namely the brakes, the boost and the suspension, we have already mentioned their respective contributions in the behavior of the scooter on the road.

But if it had to be summed up, the driving of MO 125 could be described as very intuitive, this electric scooter being particularly easy to access. His acceleration capacities are still as stunning, especially in the city where he turns out to be very swift. In addition, its high position, places the pilot in a fairly comfortable posture which allows him to better see the road if not adopting a sporting driving. Finally, Seat’s other success is to have integrated these new features without cutting into autonomy.

Autonomy: the reference of its category

The increased power of the SEAT MO 125 Performance, could have cost it dearly in autonomy. It is not so. Where the original displayed 137 km in one load, the new version replied with a solid 133 km (WLTP). This value is among the most enduring in its category, which adds to its charm.

The size of the battery (5.6 kWh) is of course for many, but the MO can also rely on a regeneration system for deceleration and braking which would allow it to recover a few kWh. This regeneration is valid on all driving modes except City mode, which only offers braking recovery. Seat engineers probably considered that in the case of urban driving, the recurring braking associated with a constant free wheel mode were undoubtedly more effective than a simple recovery to deceleration.

Finally, how to miss the originality of the MO battery. As on the first model, it is removable thanks to a very well thought out system which makes it possible to deploy a trolley and casters to avoid having to wear this block of around forty kilos. Finally, let us underline the good idea of Seat/Silence to have equipped this removable battery with an integrated transformer. In fact, it can be connected directly to any outlet, which avoids the owner the constraint to have to take her charger with him.

Seat MO 125 Performance has competitors ?

As with the first version of his MO, Seat will benefit from a considerable asset. It is almost alone on a market in full structuring. Chinese brands like Niu offer more affordable products, but less efficient. At the other end of the spectrum, BMW makes the prices flambé even if it is accompanied by high -end services. As for Honda or Yamaha, the leaders of the motorcycle industry, they are always absent subscribers when we mention the electric. Between the two extremes, Seat does what he wants or almost since his only real competitor is none other than silence, his trading partner. However at 8,900 euros, or 146 euros per month for rental, this performance version of the MO seems particularly expensive. And it is not the meager ecological bonus of 900 euros that will change the situation.

Test verdict

The new version of MO is proof that Seat has been listening to its customers. The different changes in the scooter attack the main criticisms of which he has been the subject. More powerful (over a limited time), the MO 125 Performance is also more comfortable and more reassuring in braking. Nevertheless, it seems difficult to forgive him for the absence of ABS, even less with regard to his price (8,900 euros). This price is the other major criticism against the new Mo. The bill inflated by 2,000 euros, but the performance, certainly increasing, do not justify such inflation. Nevertheless, Seat benefits from a comfortable position. At this level of performance and autonomy, it has almost no competitors. From then on his choice may seem coherent. For our part, we will tend to favor a classic MO 125, more accessible or to wait for the next evolution, which will have an ABS.
