Samsung TV test Qn90b: Punch, contrast and loyalty to the appointment
The best televisions we have tested are OLED screens, but they are not free from any defect. High -end LCD televisions can be brighter than any OLED TV and approach it in other key areas. Samsung’s Qn90B is a good example, offering dazzling brightness with few other compromises thanks to QLED technology, Mini-LED and Local Dimming.
We have tested the 65 inch model, but our conclusions also apply to other screen sizes: 43, 50, 55, 75 and 85 inch.
The Qn90B is at the top of the range of 4K NEO QLED TVs of 2022. Its main improvement compared to QN85B is a more efficient Dimming room, according to the technical sheet. Samsung offers another more expensive version, the QN95B, with the main advantage a separate oneconnect case which allows you to pass a single cable to the TV and plug its devices more easily.
An old generation design
In appearance, the Qn90b is practically identical to the QN90A of last year, and it is a good thing. Its minimalist style gives absolute priority to the image and its central support seems more elegant than the double feet that we find on most televisions. He gives the impression that the screen floats above the furniture. The elegant and rounded remote control is distinguished in many respects.
The keys are well placed, without garish colors, the volume bars and relief chains are a pleasant change compared to the standard buttons and the metal finish gives up a high -end printing. It is rechargeable via USB-C, its photovoltaic cell or Wi-Fi radio waves emitted by an internet box or a router.
A congested and confusing menu
In recent years, the Samsung smart televisions’ home page consisted of a banner at the bottom of the screen that was overlapped above the current program. The novelty of the 2022 version is that by pressing the reception button, we show a brand new Smart Hub menu which occupies the whole screen. From our point of view, the Samsung menu is almost as bad as that of LG, wasting space with advertisements and a useless size.
Overall, this menu seems dated and less personal than that of Google TV. We also encountered more latency on the Samsung than on the Google TV of Sony or TCL, with some occasions when the offsets reached several frustrating seconds.
As before, you can choose between Alexa, the Google and Bixby assistant as a voice assistant, accessible via the microphone remote control. The TV is Apple Airplay compatible and at the end of June, Samsung will deploy its game hub, with access to cloud services, including the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce Now.
A peak technical sheet
The most important characteristic in terms of image quality on the QN90B is the NEO QLED and a mini-LED backlight with local Dimming on the entire surface. The room Dimming improves the quality of the LCD image by making certain areas of the image more or less bright depending on what is happening on the screen, which considerably increases the contrast.
Our tests have shown that mini-LEDs are brighter than more classic LEDs. Judging by the obscure specification “Quantum HDR 32X” of Samsung, the QN90B has more local Dimming areas and brighter images than the 85B. Qn90b has new treatment Shape Adaptive Light Control (adaptive light control), intended to reduce the blooming and parasitic lighting, which seems to work well.
Like all Samsung Qled televisions, as well as most high -end TVs from Vizio, Hisense and TCL, the LCD screen of Qn90B is enriched with a layer of quantum points, microscopic nanocrystals that emit a wavelength specific (that is to say a color) when they receive energy. This results in better brightness and better colors compared to other televisions. Qn90b uses a 120 Hz slab, which improves the fluidity of movements on the screen. The TV supports HDR10 and HDR10 content+.
The connection is excellent. The four HDMI inputs are compatible 4K/120Hz, so if you have several devices that exploit these capacities, such as a PlayStation 5 and an Xbox Series X, you are ready. Qn90B also supports the frequency of variable refreshment, including the AMD premium pro freesync and the standard VRR formats, the allm which allows it to automatically switch to the game mode to reduce the input lag when it detects a game , and earc.
- Four HDMI entries with HDMI 2.1, HDCP 2.2
- Two USB 2 ports.0
- Optical digital audio output
- RF input (antenna)
- RS-232 port (for service only)
- Ethernet port (LAN)
Like many new high -end televisions, the QN90B is completely devoid of analog, audio or video entrances.
Image quality comparison
For our comparison, we have installed the Qn90B next to two other high-end televisions: the Sony KD-65X95K, another mini-LED model, and the LG OLED65C1, an OLED TV that we consider as one of the references of moment.
Television and movies : We started with the Benchmark HDR Blu-ray of Spears and Munsil, and the advantage of brightness of the Samsung has proven blatant. The snow -capped mountains, the sand of the desert, the clouds and other well -lit areas had more impact next to the Sony and the LG. In the dark scenes with mixed content, like a night urban landscape, the LG seemed more natural with more authentic shadows, while the Samsung and the Sony were slightly more faded.
The Samsung has done a superb job of blooming control. In the scenes on a black background, we only detected a very low light near the edge of the brightest objects on the Samsung, while the Sony was doing less well. Given its brightness, the absence of blooming on the QN90B is remarkable, even if, of course, the OLED is completely free from it.
Going to a film, The Gray Man On Netflix, the LG has taken the advantage a bit. In dark scenes such as the initial interrogation or the Bangkok nightclub, the ability of the OLED screen to preserve darkness in shadows gives it a more theatrical appearance. The Samsung was however always excellent, and the advantage of brightness in fireworks above the city, for example, was clear. Once again, the Sony was slightly lagging behind the other two, with lower lights than the Samsung and a more obvious blooming.
Video game : The Qn90B is a very good TV for the game, but we preferred the image quality in game mode on the other two. By playing Stray On the PS5, the colors seemed to be supersaturated and imprecise in most Samsung modes. The exception was the sports mode, which somewhat tamed colors (especially green) and brought them closer to those of LG and Sony, more precise. As for other image modes (standard, GDP, RTS, FPS and Custom), we had trouble distinguishing any difference. In some mixed scenes, the brightness of the Samsung was too strong for a dark room.
On the other hand, we greeted the fact that the TV automatically detects our Xbox and goes into game mode with a status bar displaying various parameters, confirming that we are using the VRR and 120 images per second, for example. Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla was very fluid with these parameters.
Lively lighting : The Qn90b is technically the brightest TV we have ever tested. We say “theoretically” because its figures are strongly inflated. Despite everything, it is excessively bright in its specific modes also, especially in relation to the OLED models.
The Samsung screen, which rejects the light, maintains the contrast and the punch in the event of high brightness, and reduces reflections, better than the Sony and the LG. The screen, combined with the prodigious light yield of Qn90B, in fact the best television we have tested for light parts.
Uniformity and viewing angle : With the sights, we noticed small variations of brightness on the Samsung screen, more than on the Sony and the LG. But that did not appear by looking at ordinary content. In viewing out of angle, the two LCDs have lost the fidelity of colors and levels of black at almost the same rate, while the LG was practically perfect.
Conclusion
We compared this samsung side by side with an OLED LG TV and, although the LG won, the Samsung gets closer to it than all LCD TV tested at CNET. Qn90B produces excellent punch, very good contrast and excellent color fidelity, surpassing the performance of the excellent QN90A from last year. And as usual, the design and the characteristics of Samsung are of first order. From elegant support to sophisticated remote control, including a series of game options, including a new hub compatible with Xbox Game Pass, the Qn90B is simply great. If you are looking for an alternative to the OLED, or if you just have a bright room, the QN90B is a great option.
