Samsung the freestyle projector: Presentation

This very nice portable video projector allows you to watch movies and series streaming in wifi. With its HDMI micro port, it is even possible to connect a video game console or a Blu-ray player. You will then benefit from a very large image measuring up to 2.5 m diagonal. Adjustable at 180˚, this Samsung projector can project on the walls as on the ceiling. Just rotate it on its base to change the projection area.

This spot -shaped projector weighs 800 grams and measures 10 cm in diameter for just over 17 cm in height. We can therefore very easily win everywhere with you.

It adopts a cylindrical shape and its chassis is covered with a white rubber coating. Its circular base allows you to adjust its inclination and offers it perfect stability.

At home, just a power outlet is to use it. Outside, it can be supplied with an external battery via its USB-C port. Too bad the battery is not integrated, as with some competitors.

Image automatic settings

One of the strengths of this projector is its ability to settle the image on its own as soon as it lights up. It automatically straightens the edges of the image, restores its geometry and makes the focus almost instantly. We can therefore tilt it and guide it as you wish, without obligation to place it exactly in front of the wall. Whatever its position and orientation, the projector always manages to project a clear image to correct geometry.

Note, however, that the trapezoid correction reduces the quality and the definition of the displayed image. To obtain a real HD 1080p full frame image with this projector, we must therefore place it in the axis of the screen.

Large image without zoom

The size of the image projected by the Samsung depends directly on the distance and the projection angle. The more it is removed from the wall, the greater the image. The image quality can be very satisfactory or mediocre, depending on the quality of the wall (beware of roughness) and especially the projection conditions. With ambient light, the image is dull, but in the dark, it is a festival of colors !

During this test, we pushed it in its entrenchments by projecting an image of 3 meters basic in a dedicated room ! The overall brightness of the image is then a bit weak but the result remains acceptable. Note, however, that beyond 2 m diagonal, the pixels become visible if you place yourself too close to the screen.

In standard image mode, the colors are lively and well saturated, which is suitable for sport and documentaries. With the cinema image mode, the shades are softer, adapted to films and series.

Note that the intelligent calibration of this projector adapts the color rendering of the image according to the color of the wall. It is therefore not a problem if the projection surface is not entirely white.

360 ° sound ?

The projector speaker is supposed to spread the 360 ​​° sound. In fact, this is only the case when the projector is placed vertically, to project to the ceiling. Otherwise, the sound is more or less strong depending on whether you are in the axis of the speaker or not. However, even when the projector is behind the spectators, the sound remains sufficiently audible.

To improve the sound rendering, we were able to associate him with the Bluetooth Marshall Kilburn 2 speaker, without suffering from the gap between the images and the sound. Another solution is to link HDMI ARC/EARC socket from the projector to the HDMI socket compatible with a sound bar or amplifier.

You can also use this projector as a bluetooth wireless speaker with a smartphone. However, the fan continues to operate, even by cutting the projection function. We measured a noise level of 33-34 dB 1 meter distance. So you have to set up the volume so as not to be unwelcome.

Connected projector

This Samsung the Freestyle projector incorporates the Tizen operating system common to all Samsung TV. Once connected to the Internet in WiFi, it accesses a multitude of content via Samsung services and applications like Netflix, Disney+, Video Prime, Appletv+…

Voice control (Bixby and Alexa) and screen duplication (Mirroring via the SmartThings or Airplay 2 application) are also possible.

Samsung the freestyle projector: implementation

We tested this projector by projecting on the wall and ceiling. We also tested it in a dedicated home cinema room, on a Lumene Movie Palace UHD 4K ultra slim 300c screen screen. The projector was connected wirelessly to a WiFi Mesh Netgear Orbi RBK852 router to enjoy the best bandwidth possible in streaming.

The commissioning is fast and intuitive. We connect the projector and then light it by touching the dedicated command on its touch interface. The remote control joins by pressing one of its keys, then selecting the language of the interface. We then choose the configuration mode: via the smartphone or with the remote control. The first requires the installation of the SmartThings application which turns out to be user -friendly and intuitive. The projector configuration only takes a few moments.

Samsung the freestyle: our impressions

This samsung picoprojector is extra to project anywhere: on a wall, a ceiling or a portable screen. Just a power outlet and wifi access or a smartphone as a video source. In addition, the automatic image adjustment, fast and very efficient, greatly simplifies its use.

The image quality is also very satisfactory. Precision and fluidity are there, and the colors are bright and saturated. Provided, however, to keep a reasonable image size (no more than 2 m diagonal ideally) and to project in the darkness. Otherwise the contrast does not take off and the image remains dull.

On the sound side, the speaker is enough for proximity listening, delivering a clear and fairly energetic sound. The Tizen interface is still as complete and pleasant to use. However, we deplored a lack of reactivity of the projector when pressing the remote control keys. The fault of an underwound processor ?

XGIMI H2 (€ 899)

The Xgimi H2 is brighter than the Samsung and projects a larger image (up to 7 meters diagonal) and more contrasting. Its connection is better provided: 2 HDMI, 2 USB, Optical output and headphone jack. The Samsung, however, offers more flexibility thanks to its automatic image adaptation system. The Tizen interface is also more user -friendly and more complete.

Philips Picopix Max TV (€ 899)

The Philips Picopix Max TV projects a larger, brighter image (auto brightness) and better contrasting than the Samsung. Its connection is more extensive and its Android TV interface with Chromecast is equal to Tizen. Philips, however, gives access to many more applications. Its audio section is stereo (2 x 12 watts) and can operate even turned off. Less powerful, that of Samsung is in mono and suffers from the noise of the fan, even with the disabled image. However, it does not have a image correction function as advanced as the Samsung. On the other hand, it incorporates a rechargeable battery offering 4 hours of autonomy.

Samsung Care + protects your smartphone from accidental damage for two years.

• Cover against breakage Physical damage such as cracks or broken screen or rear window harming the proper functioning of the mobile*
• Cover against other damage Damage caused by liquid or any physical damage, other than screen damage, affecting the use of software or loading mobile*
• Repair by approved suppliers Your smartphone will be repaired only by service providers approved by Samsung and with Samsung original spare parts.

Take advantage of optimal tranquility.
Accidents can occur. What would you do if you damage your Samsung device ? How long could you pass you ?
Examine the guarantee that meets your needs, the duration of the coverage, the type of warranty, the cost of the deductible and the payment methods.

• International coverage for accidental damage, including screen cracks.
• Cover in the event of theft (depending on the chosen formula – refer to the information document)
• Up to two claims per year (depending on the formula chosen – refer to the information document)
• Repair certified by Samsung
• Battery replacement
• Damage to the accessories present when purchasing in the device box

What is not covered

• Device loss
• Any incident in which you knowingly put your mobile device in danger or have not taken care
• Aesthetic damage

You can terminate the Samsung Care+ insurance within 30 days of receipt of the GTC, without paying additional fees or charges, with full reimbursement, provided that no sinister is declared. Beyond the 30-day period, you can always terminate your insurance, but no refund will be made for insurance formulas payable monthly. The one -year and two years insurance formulas will be reimbursed in proportion to the insurance period not used if you have not submitted a compensation request. If your compensation request has succeeded, no refund will be made.
