He’s there ! The OLED TV with Samsung sauce is finally marketed. We had already had a small overview of the potential of the Samsung slab… At Sony, the A95K being the first model to exploit the QD-Old. But this time, it is the TV division of Korean whose mission is to make the most of the capacities of the screen developed by the Display division of Samsung. As a reminder, the QD-Oled, is an OLED slightly different from what LG offers insofar as Samsung relies on dowry quantum (quantum boxes) to enhance the brightness of the slab.

In other words, the QD OLED, it is both the promise of brightness of the QLED and the assurance of an infinite contrast rate of the OLED, in a word the best of the two worlds. Our first test of a QD-Oled slab, Sony’s A95K turned out to be very interesting without being revolutionary from the point of view of the image. Does the situation change when Samsung is in controllers ?

We do not change a design that wins

Samsung’s first QD-Oled does not benefit from a particular design. He is in line with the latest productions of the brand, namely a clever mixture of sobriety, efficiency (on the borders of the particularly fine screen) and quality of finish. Thicker than an LG G2, it will undoubtedly be a little less being than the latter, if it is hanging on a wall. On the other hand, despite its imposing size, it remains relatively “discreet” the fault undoubtedly to a very neutral design, including at the place of the foot. This simple square base in brushed metal is enough to hold the 65 inch diagonal, but limits the addition of a sound bar in front of the 65S95B since it only raises the slab very slightly (7cm).

On the other hand, despite many good points on the design aspect, we can only regret the absence of the One Connect, the dear case to Samsung which allows you to deport the connection and refine the TV. The Korean manufacturer seems to want to limit this functionality to its highest -end models, but for a remarkable return to the OLED and on a TV at almost 3,000 euros, this One Concrect would not have been too much.

QD-Oled vs Oled, Act II

What is the OLED is going to be worth in the Samsung sauce ? In terms of TV, the justice of the peace, it is the image quality and that of the S95B is excellent. So much for the balance sheet, let’s go into detail now. This begins with the structure of the sub-pixels of the slab. This is amazing enough for an OLED insofar as only three colors appear (red, green and blue). There is no white sub-pixel and for good reason, the clean of QD-Oled is to use the quantum dots to generate white via blue sub-pixels. As for the result: it is excellent since the S95B displays particularly interesting brightness data. Thus, our 01 LAB measured the luminous peak at 995 cd/m2, one of the best values of our comparison. For comparison, in cinema mode, the Samsung QD-Oled is 7% brighter on average than the OLED tested by 01NET.com for two years. Finally, Oled obliges, the contrast is infinite.

In terms of color loyalty, the Samsung 65S95B also displays excellent results. The colorimetric report DCI-P3 displays a 2.59 average delta e, which is simply excellent, as is the coverage of the colorimetric space (98%). Finally, the Samsung QD-Oled benefits from excellent views as well as an anti-reflective system that is always a reference.

Finally, with regard to the compensation of movements and the scale of the content, the S95B is still very efficient. The new processor embedded on this model, the neural quantum processor 4K, is a good evolution of the neo quantum from last year and even does wonders on Full HD content which are very naturally upscalles.

In absolute terms, the performance of the Samsung QD-Oled on our test bench are very advantageous, but to judge the quality of this television, it should be compared, to other OLED models on the one hand and especially in Sony A95K which exploits the same slab. As often, it is on the ability to decode HDR that we recognize the best TV. The condition for being efficient in HDR is to be bright. In this game, Samsung is equal to Sony on QD-Oled and therefore remains level of the best OLED on the market. Ultimately, the expected superiority of QD-Oled technology over the OLED is not proven, whatever the manufacturer who tries it. Nevertheless, the S95B is at the level of the best OLED on the market, which for a “first” is rather remarkable. On the other hand, we can only deplore that Samsung makes the Dolby Vision format, which is a shame for a TV as effective in HDR.

Interface: Tizen in pain

This is a particularity that the S95B shares with the other Samsung TVs of 2022, unfortunately not the best. The new version of its homemade bone, Tizen 6, is set back compared to the previous iterations. It is neither the ergonomics nor the display that are in question, Tizen has not changed a lot from this point of view, but the overall slowness of the system. Tizen is simply slower than previous years, the fault no doubt at an interface that has become too busy.
In fact, we deplore the appearance of small latency times during changes in menu and some somewhat long loading times, the bone needing overtime to display all of the vignettes. Ultimately, Tizen ended up becoming as rough as a Google or a web OS, but it is now slower than its two competitors.

Video games: Samsung Master in the matter

Samsung has become a benchmark for video games for a few years. The Korean manufacturer has taken the right habit of treating his input lag, opening his system to the various protocols used by gamers and even giving tools to improve performance in play, thanks to a dedicated mode and a gaming bar of the most appreciable.

Unsurprisingly, the 65S95B holds its rank by being up to its predecessors. Our 01NET LAB has measured its delay in the display at only 9 ms, the best value collected to date (1 ms less than the QE65QN95A). For information, for there to be a gap between the action on the controller and its repercussion on the screen, it takes a LAG input greater than 16 ms.

Finally, as on these previous high-end models, the S95B is 4K 120 Hz compatible (VRR and Alln) but also Freesync and G-Sync to be used with a PC. Finally, we also find on this QD-Oled the famous gaming bar and all the options dedicated to the game developed by Samsung in recent years, including the inexhaustible “Dynamic Black Equalizer”. This makes it possible to degrade blacks on the screen to improve visibility in dark areas, which are, as everyone knows, favorite places or enemies will hide. Interest: alleged best performance for the most competitive players, whatever if the image quality goes into the background.

Only shade on the board on the game part: setting the default image quality. The original colorimetry of the game mode is somewhat exaggerated and you will have to go back through the TV options to find a little more realistic colors.

One Remote: Solar remote control

If Samsung has sometimes been able to be stingy in terms of connectors, this is not the case with this S95B. The four HDMI ports are in format 2.1 and allow a flow rate of up to 48 gbits/s, from ultra HD to 120 IPS. One of these four ports is also compatible with EARC, which is welcome if the user wants to associate a soundbar with the TV for example. Finally, Samsung does not ignore the classics (Ethernet, optics) and even offers two USB-A sockets for those who would like to use their hard drives and other USB keys. Finally, there is only a lack of helmet to make the big home in connectors, a pity.

On the remote control side, Samsung takes up the model unveiled last year, a small rather body in terms of touch and with a solar panel on its rear side. This one Remote remains, in our view, the best remote control on the market. It is not only very simple to use, has only useful shortcuts, is adorned with a microphone to activate voice assistants, but in addition, it spares the user of the tedious task of thinking of batteries. In short, a reference.

Audio: Sony still has room

Samsung opted for the simplicity on the audio part of his QD-Oled. He equipped his TV with a system 2.2.2 with 10W speakers, two of which are oriented upwards to meet the requirements of Dolby Atmos, and two bass boxes of 10W also. Concretely, if his technical sheet does not make it a terror of the sound, the reality is still suitable. In addition to the 60 watts of maximum power, the audio quality is honorable and a coherent coverage of audio spectrum. Ultimately, the audio performance of the S95B is honest but still far from market references on the OLED, SONY and Philips.

Finally, and this is a plus at Samsung, the S95B is compatible with Q-Symphony technology which allows it to be very easily associated with the manufacturer’s bars.

The verdict of the test

Samsung OLED 65S95B 2022

The Samsung 65S95B is one of the best televisions of the year and confirms, if we doubted it, that the manufacturer did not return to the OLED to put on pearls. Its impressive luminous peak contributes to an excellent image quality, especially on the most demanding content, but the S95B also knows how to show versatility by upgrading content in full HD with a big know-how. We would still have liked Samsung knowing how to take part of QD-Oled technology that he develops. Arriving several months after Sony and its A95K and having access to more resources, it does not necessarily do better than Japanese. Despite everything, the QD-Oled stands out as a technology of choice that only needs to be magnified. Next year ?
