Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 test: a version 3.5 that does not lack assets
Part of our craze for Fold 4 comes of his dozens of small improvements related to Fold 3. The hinge is a little thinner, the phone is a little lighter, the edges of the screen are a little finer, the chassis is a little wider, which makes it more pleasant to use when closed. The software part has also gained ergonomics, making the multitasking more accessible and easy.
After two weeks spent using the Z Fold 4, we had a crush and it became our favorite Android tablet. But its price is a real obstacle. € 1,800 minimum and up to € 2,159 for the model with 1 to !
A tailor -made design
Xparlons first of all of the main defect common to the design of this type of smartphones (theOppo Find N is almost an exception): the fold of the main screen that can be seen and smell under the finger. The Z Fold 4 is no exception but we did not find it annoying for its daily use.
The hinge was redesigned, It is finer than that of Fold 3 but also firmer, which makes the closure incredibly satisfactory. On the other hand, due to the general size, it is impossible to open and close the smartphone with one hand as we can do with the Galaxy Z Flip 4.
If we combine this hinge with the aluminum edges and the reinforced glass Gorilla Glass Victus Plus, the Fold 4 seems more solid than any other folding phone that we tested. The hinge also allows several configurations, such as serving as a support to watch movies by plane, or as a tripod to take photos and videos.
Fold 4 is 3 millimeters larger than Fold 3, Which makes it less annoying and bulky when closed in phone mode. However, the keyboard on the facade screen is always a little narrow to our taste.
Android 12l and Flex mode
Samsung brought Several new important features which range from the taskbar transformed into a dock to new cursor and trackpad available in Flex mode.
Fold 4 works under Android 12l, which is optimized for large screens and folding terminals. Samsung’s personalized ONE UI personalized interface provides the brand -specific extras without compromising on the features and capacities that can be expected from a folding smartphone. The dock located at the bottom of the screen allows you to easily access multitasking applications. Just slide one application over the other, and voila. This ease of use is one of the reasons that make Fold 4 if attractive.
One of our favorite activities with Fold 4 is watching videos. When you view content and close the smartphone, reading instantly resumes on the external screen and vice versa. About it, The rendering of videos and games on this 6.2 inch screen is superb, Even with the low height/width ratio.
There is also the Flex mode, which moves the application that is used at the top of the screen while displaying the controls at the bottom when the phone is positioned semi-open. For example, the YouTube application displays the videos in the upper half of the screen, while the lower half is used to scroll or description. Flex mode can be forced from the Labs menu in the settings for applications that are not specifically optimized. It is then for example possible to adjust the brightness, the sound or even to take a screenshot. However, you should know that the experience is not perfect all the time. For example, Instagram clumsily floats in the middle of the screen with arrows on each side to align it left or right.
Samsung has improved its photo application. From now on, when you change a photo in Flex mode, the image remains on the upper half, the modification tools and the interface at the bottom. It’s much more practical !
New addition to Flex mode, the possibility of using the bottom of the screen as a mini touchpad with a cursor on the top. We have not yet found a lot of use in this configuration, but we salute the fact that Samsung seeks to exploit the unique format of Fold. Like his predecessor, He also supports the S Pen stylus. It’s fun to use, but we would have liked that he could fix magnetically on the side as the Apple Pencil does on The iPad.
The Z Fold 4 has five cameras
At the back of the Z fold is a triple photo module with:
- A main sensor of 50 megapixels with a large-angle lens (f/1.8)
- A 12-megapixel sensor with ultra-angle objective (f/2.2)
- A 10 -megapixel sensor with 3x telephoto lens (f/2.4)
There is a camera on the external screen (10 megapixels; f/2.2) and another under the main screen (4 megapixels; f/1.8).
The camera under the screen is the one we have used the least, which probably explains why Samsung hid it under the slab. It is not invisible as a tainless mirror, but it is more discreet than a notch or a punch. We used it a few times for video cats, and no one noticed anything unusual. However, the image seemed flat and strongly treated.
The main sensor and the telephoto rear is similar to those of Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+. The photos are beautiful and clear, with colors and a striking contrast. Night mode is also very good. The photo part has clearly progressed compared to Fold 3, but it remains behind in relation to the quality offered by Galaxy S22 Ultra, Pixel 6 Pro and of The iPhone 13 Pro.
The colors and the contrast stand out in this photo of the city center of San Francisco
The quantity of details that Fold 4 was able to grasp is quite impressive
Samsung smartphones are known to upset the colors, but red here is very realistic
The colors are very lively but perfect for a publication on social networks
Despite the smoke emanating from our dishes, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 manages to offer an exploitable rendering
We can appreciate the level of detail on the fur
These two photos taken with the main sensor are full of details on the entire area
The transition between the Grand Angle and the Ultra Grand Angle is naturally
In 3x zoom in right, the snapshot is strangely more pleasant to look with more bright colors and more details than that of the Grand Angle on the left
We like the way the development goes from net zones (coffee mousse) to blurred areas (the dish and the counter)
Photo taken with night mode
The only times we have noticed that the Fold 4 camera had trouble working, It was under weak or mixed lighting, and in full sun.
The best part of the Fold 4 cameras actually has little to do with lenses and sensors. This relates to the design of the phone that can tripod. It can be placed in all kinds of places and positions from different angles. One of the most interesting functions is the possibility of using the rear sensors to take selfies, or share an overview of the viewfinder with the subject.
Performances and autonomy
Fold 4 is equipped with the chip Snapdragon 8 plus gen 1, The fastest (and most recent) processor of all Samsung phones. This is the same SOC found in gaming smartphones and the RAZR 2022, the brand new folding phone from Motorola. Speaking of games, the Fold 4 has the perfect size for this hobby, The main screen offering a welcome feeling of immersion. Mario Kart Tour, Genshin Impact, Call of Duty Mobile or Mobile PUBG Turn in Crick. This excellent gaming experience is a very good surprise.
But the quick processor and the high refresh rate screen are not only good for games. The animations are incredibly fluid. In reference test benches, Fold 4 has obtained better results than Fold 3 and S22 Ultra.
Antutu, Geekbench, 3D Mark and PC Mark
The battery of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 offers the same capacity as that of Fold 3, which was very average. We hoped that the combination of Android 12L and the Snapdragon 8 plus Gen 1 would make it better. The autonomy is indeed better, but not much. Most of the time, the phone held Just a day on a load. We also carried out a test during which, for three quarters of an hour, we watched YouTube videos, traveled our Tiktok flow, played to Mario Kart And FIFA Mobile Then a five -minute zoom video call. The battery increased from 100 % to 82 % during these 45 minutes. Fortunately, Fold 4 does not take long to recharge, even if its load speed is not as fast as that of the OnePlus 10 Pro. After 30 minutes, the battery increased from 20 % to 73 %. Note that Fold 4 comes without an adapter sector.
Conclusion: Fold 4 vs Fold 3 vs Fold 2
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 brings all the shades and the refinement that Fold 3 needed. However, if you have a Fold 3, there is no need to switch to 4.
If you have a Fold 2, it may be worth thinking about it, especially if you can get a good deal by caught it. You benefit from a faster processor, a more robust finish, waterproofing (although Fold 4 is still not resistant to dust), support for S Pen and cameras of cameras best quality.
The price of Fold 4 is clearly not intended to reach the greatest number, but it is identical to that of Fold 3. Despite the favorite that Fold 4 inspires us, we will not buy it. And it will take years before a folding smartphone of this type becomes affordable.

Galaxy Z Fold 4: The pros and cons of Samsung folding smartphone
The use of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 for several weeks has shown us that folding phones have real promises but also real drawbacks.
The CNET France team with CNET.com
Posted on 04/12/2023 at 10:36
After testing the Galaxy Z Fold 4 at the time of its launch, we decided to immerse ourselves more in the use of a folding smartphone by doing our mobile by default for three weeks. This experience has reserved us Some surprises, some pleasant, others less…
What we liked in the use of the Galaxy Z Fold 4
The best thing about the Galaxy Z Fold 4, of course, is its interior screen the size of a tablet. The 7.6 -inch display allowed us to leave our iPad at home during a plane trip during which we were able to take advantage of Netflix. Among the other tasks for which the big screen of the Z Fold 4 has proven practical, let us quote the Consultation of online menus in restaurants, video chat and reading news items.
The idea of having a phone that also serves as a tablet is not new to early followers and technology enthusiasts. But for most users, it is still a new concept.
This underlines the main lesson that we have learned from the use of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 in recent weeks. Currently, The possibility of displaying applications on a screen the size of a tablet is its greatest asset . We have never used Flex mode, the function that divides an application between the upper and lower parts of the screen when it is folded halfway. We tried it by acquired conscience, but never needed it in everyday use.
Besides the big screen, we were impressed by the power of the speakers From the Galaxy Z Fold 4. He was able to fill our room with his much more easily than the smaller phones to which we are used to. Another feature that makes the Galaxy Z Fold 4 an ideal entertainment device.
The battery life of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is correct, but nothing more. With regular use, you can easily spend a day with a single load. However, during a trip where we used the phone for guided trips, consult Netflix during the flight by plane and make calls for Uber and Lyft journeys to move, the need for recharge was made quickly feel.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a 50 megapixel main camera, a 12 megapixel ultra-angle and a 10 megapixel telephoto lens, just like the Galaxy S23. The two phones also have a 3X optical zoom and a 30x digital zoom. We have noticed that The photos of the Galaxy S23 are more contrasted in the shadows , which makes them a little more beautiful than those of Z Fold 4.
This is probably due to updating the background treatment, thanks to the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor of the S23. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 works with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 of the previous generation. But the two phones are excellent for taking photos in low light conditions.
What we did not like in the use of the Galaxy Z Fold 4
Although it is at its fourth generation , The fold of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is always noticeable. If the rumors of The Elec, Etnews and the Disconneur Ice Universe prove to be correct, Samsung could remedy this problem with a new type of hinge for its successor. But companies like Huawei and Oppo already have one step ahead of Samsung in this regard.
The external screen of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 seems more natural than on the previous versions thanks to its slightly wider design. But there are still times when The square format is visible. This is particularly the case when taking photos and the screen viewfinder offers a viewer smaller than that of a normal phone.
The phone itself is still quite heavy : It weighs 263 grams, against 233 grams for the Galaxy S23 Ultra and 195 grams for the Galaxy S23 Plus.
Although we loved the big screen of the Galaxy Z Fold to read and watch videos, the interface would benefit from being still refined. Current terminals still lack sufficiently convincing software features to impose the promise of folding screens.
Conclusion
At the time of the balance sheet, the Galaxy Z Fold has shown us that folding phones have a future. Above all, we were able to use it as a normal phone. And this may be the most revealing teaching.
